Mass Effect 3

50 posts in this topic

So Commander Shepard's story finally comes to a end in Mass Effect 3 which is out today in the US (Friday over here). Mass Effect 2 is one of my favourite games from this current gen so I'm looking forward to seeing how the trilogy concludes.

Is anyone getting it today?

Won't be getting it today - still in school - but I'll definitely be picking it up over spring break or when summer starts. So pumped. It looks beastly and you get your first action on a war-torn Earth!

Couldn't agree more. Not sure when, but will definitely be getting it.
I"m interested to see how the multiplayer works. Is it just co-op for the campaign? Or will there be the usual TDM, CTF, etc?

It's a 4 player co-op multiplayer. I think each match you face ten waves of enemies with a different objective during each wave. There's multiple maps but that's the only game mode as far as I know.

I just picked it up today for PS3, along with Street Fighter X Tekken.

I'll probably skip over the rest of Twisted Metal just to play this. Twisted Metal was such a letdown...fun game, but felt unnecessary and the story was absurdly dark.

Apparently, your choices from the first two games come back to have an impact in this one. I'm not that concerned because my dude was pretty good most of the time but you'll have to deal with dramz if you were unfaithful to your ME1 partner in ME2... which I was.

Honestly, I was fully expected Shepard to wake up from his "death" in ME2 to a child lol

I didn't get to finish ME2 because my brother never gave my copy back, so I'll have to start fresh with no save data.

Plan on picking it up in later months. My gaming time will most likely be consumed by Street Fighter X Tekken.

Waiting this week and a half until spring break to play this game is going to be very tough. I got my collector's edition sitting back at home, but with all the tests between now and then, a game like that is a recipe for disaster for me.

I can't wait to see how the story ends. Mass Effect is the greatest storytelling achievement in video game history.

There's over a thousand variables transferred from a Mass Effect 2 save according to Bioware. The main decisions that you made that make a difference in Mass Effect 3 are as follows...
The outcome of the Suicide Mission.
Accepting or rejecting reinstatement as a Spectre during Citadel: The Council.
Saving or destroying the genophage data during Mordin's loyalty mission.
Preventing or allowing Tali's exile during Tali's loyalty mission.
Rewriting or destroying the heretic geth collective during Legion's loyalty mission.
Destroying or preserving the Collector Base during the Suicide Mission.
Amazon has ME2 for $20 if you want to finish it.

Just started playing yesterday...and it's already one of the best games I've ever played. Amazing.

Very early on, when an innocent civilian dies during a significant event in the game's open, I actually felt sad and wanted to cry. Very few games evoke that sort of emotion from me, especially so early in its story. This is a prime example of how to make people feel the gravity of a situation; Activision needs to take notes before they try to do another exploitative, shock-value moment in one of their COD games.

No kidding, when that random civilian died, I felt my blood boiling and wanted revenge. That's exactly how well-done that segment was.

Awesome! This is the kind of game I'm looking for from Bioware.
That's the kind of reaction I had in Red Dead Redemption (when a certain character died). Damn I was furious.

The ending was terrible, and all of the (complete) choices were the same essentially.
Haha my brother said the same thing. Then he noted some irregularities right before the end. In other words pay attention to detail throughout the game, because you're missing something rather important.

I really like the multiplayer on this game. I hadn't touched it until I realized you had to do it for the galactic readiness in the main game so I started it up... haven't touched single-player since. Love the fact that you're working with teammates against a computer opponent rather than other players. Maybe I just like it because I'm good at it LOL

Okay now that I'm starting this series I can see why people are upset about the ending.

Leads me to believe that either BioWare are geniouses or complete idiots. Depends on how they offer the DLC, free or paid.

News just broke that they are going to change something about the ending last night. Who knows how extensive it will be, but anything has to be better than what they pulled originally.

But if Indoctrination Theory was their original plan, then BioWare is genius. Based on what little we've heard from them since this controversy broke, however, I don't think it was.
I think Indoctrination Theory better be it! Hopefully they are just playing dumb. However, there were better ways go about giving a better ending.
I'll reserve my comments until after the DLC comes out.

I am a tremendous fan of the entire series and I had zero problem with the ending I chose, we all knew this was supposed to be the end of Shepard's journey and the last game in the main series. However, the ending cutscenes did seem hastily thrown together, and if that is the problem some people are having, I understand, they definitely could have elaborated upon the ramifications of your decisions.

That said, there are a ton of people upset with the game because of supposed plot holes and unanswered questions, which I can't agree with. Look at all of the successful sci fi franchises, they leave tons of unanswered questions and sci fi as a genre is inherently susceptible to "plot holes." Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr Who, Gears of War, they all thrive because unanswered questions cause fans to become more involved and speculate themselves, not to mention the limitless potential for untold stories in these universes because of these unanswered questions. There is a popular theory floating around about the game in that Shepard himself was indoctrinated at some point. While I don't buy it myself, I support it because some fans showed some creativity to find evidence for these claims in trying to answer these questions. I will never understand why some people feel the need to be just told everything and not show the love back towards their favorite fictional stories.

The game itself, gameplay wise, is awesome. Excellent improvements in all aspects of combat. I started playing the multiplayer just to get my "galactic readiness" up, but the customization and classes of the multiplayer characters give it a lot of replayability in my opinion. Obviously this game isn't for everyone, but don't just buy into the game having a "terrible ending" from angry fanboys, check it out yourself.

One of the most wrenching parts of the entire series for myself was when
Mordin died
Just the way he did it: righting his wrongs, and humming the entire time. Not a central or pivotal character but an enjoyable one, IMO.

They're adding an epilogue to the terrible endings. Making crap longer does not make it any less crappy.

raven actualy they are going to go in depth on those endings already existing to explain in more detail what is happening since the AVG gamer was not used to the old Scifi shows that never quite gave all the answers at the end and left things open. realizing where they are coming from on this several of my favorites were not the best written shows I felt because they left to many questions in their finale but ME3 follows that line which is typical of Traditional Sci Fi

That doesn't fix the problem. The problem was your choices don't matter, although that was the point of the series up until the last ten minutes of Mass Effect 3. It's hard to respect a company claiming they are preserving their artistic integrity when the ending they came up with was less artistic than Rebecca Black's "Friday."
