The problem is we just paid Cundiff a big contract. And competition in training camp won't do much good. Cundiff will easily make the kicks on his own turf. It's the high pressure kicks on foreign soil where he is unreliable.

Yea he got his contract but if its a late round pick it wont make much impact on the cap anyway. So basically wed be paying this kid Cundiffs money too if he were to pan out and just take the hit on Cundiff. Im not literally saying we take cundiffs paycheck and it goes to this kid because I know how fast people are to jump on someone.

The money they're paying Cundiff and he misses a simple kick to get us possibly to the SB? They're going to waive him and sign a rookie for cheap and use the money for Rice or Grubbs or Webb or anyone else. Who would YOU rather pay (or risk losing) Grubbs or Cundiff?

If you watch the old Hard Knocks, Billy Cundiff got a very prominent role and lots of interviews in the Cowboys one.
They even followed him and the punter to an estate agent as they were going to houseshare for the year

Anyway back on topic, that's the nature of the position
The old expensive kicker gets replaced by the young cheap option who can do it just as well

I can remember when Vanderjack missed wide left and the Colts got rid them.

But they replaced him with a proven pro bowl kicker in Vinateri.

So while It's time for Cundiff to go, a rookie kicker is not the answer. I don't care how easy he makes 50 yarders. You want to couunt on a rookie to make that same kick? Haven't we learned from Hauschka?

If there is a proven vet kicker available then that's the move. Is there one who is a RFA or UFA?

If not then go with Cundiff again.

A rookie is not the answer.

I posted this in a separate thread that was off topic and didn't get much feedback because of that, I'm not sure that this is the right section, but bare with me and give me some feedback.

I don't have any personal vendetta against Cundiff, but it's quite obvious he is a below average kicker and his pro bowl season in 2010 was an anomaly not the norm. Since Cundiff joined the league in 2002 he is a 76.7% field goal kicker and he is a measly 5-19 from 50+ yards. What's worse is that Cundiff is 34-48 from 40-49 yds and 39-51 from 30-39 yds, so according to his stats, Cundiff has only been able to make kicks from 1-29 yds with any regularity throughout his career. I'm not saying blindly throw a new kicker into the starting job, but I think it's completely necessary to add a new kicker to the roster to battle with Cundiff for the starting job.

I really like the kid Greg Zuerlein, he is Mel Kiper's top kicker of this years draft class. Apparently he makes 50+ yarders with ease and regularity and I would be ecstatic if we could pick him up as an URFA, or maybe even drop a 7th rd pick on him. A good reliable kicker is extremely important, especially in our offense that struggles to put 6 on the board and relies on our kicker to win games for us. Let me know what you guys think and if you would be willing to drop a day 3 draft pick on a kicker who can consistently make it from 50+ yds, is young and would be a part of our franchise for many years to come. I definitely agree that we should add a rookie kicker to compete with Cundiff. Just bringing in Graham isn't going to cut it. As for having a vendetta against Cundiff, I just want to quote a proverb about vendetta to show you how we Italians don't take it lightly. "Vendetta porta una condanna a morte per tutta la famiglia." (Translation: Vendetta brings a death sentence to your whole family. It's similar to what Confusius wrote about vengeance: "If you chose to go on the path of vengeance, then you must first dig 2 graves, one for the victim and one for yourself.") Please choose your words carefully so that you don't offend others, my friend. I might have said something like, "I don't bear a grudge against Cundiff for missing the kick."

Cundiff isn't going anywhere, unfortunately. If there's one thing we know about Harbaugh, he exhibits blind loyalty in almost every decision he makes. Cundiff is one of 'his guys,' just like David Reed and Cam Cameron. He should absolutely be cut, but he won't be.

Thats a very close minded view my man thats like saying I wouldnt trust a rookie qb. If someone has allot of talent and you can pick them up at a reasonable price you arent going to pass just because "you cant trust a rookie". Remember rookies dont stay rookies forever, and we could easilly practice squad him for a year if he isnt ready or if Cundiff beats him out. This kid is special, just watch that video he was 9 for 9 from 50+ yds and had a game where he made 3 50+ yd kicks in one half. He could easilly be our franchise kicker for upwards of 20 years given the fact hes 23 and kickers can usually play into their late 30s or 40s.

I was really pissed that we didn't carry Graham into the playoffs after Cundiff got hurt. The reality is that Cundiff has been up and down his whole career and we were sold on his up curve enough to sign him for a multi-year deal. Now that his career sine curve has dipped again, we are all ready to jettison his sorry lame leg, along with his short kickoffs and wide lefts. Ironically, we put up with several years of Stover's short kickoffs and used that as an excuse for choosing Cundiff over Graham. I'm pretty sure that a guy like Zuerlein is flying under the radar of most teams in the NFL. He most probably won't even get drafted. Was he even at the combine? Are we allowed to bring him in for a tryout before the draft? Let's get him as an undrafted free agent. Hopefully, someone can tell Ozzie about this kid.

Graham and Cundiff need to have a choke competition in the offseason. I'd rather go with Zuerlein and save Cundiff's salary to sign a position player that is released late in training camp.
