Billy Cundiff And A Possible Replacement

43 posts in this topic

I posted this in a separate thread that was off topic and didn't get much feedback because of that, I'm not sure that this is the right section, but bare with me and give me some feedback.

I don't have any personal vendetta against Cundiff, but it's quite obvious he is a below average kicker and his pro bowl season in 2010 was an anomaly not the norm. Since Cundiff joined the league in 2002 he is a 76.7% field goal kicker and he is a measly 5-19 from 50+ yards. What's worse is that Cundiff is 34-48 from 40-49 yds and 39-51 from 30-39 yds, so according to his stats, Cundiff has only been able to make kicks from 1-29 yds with any regularity throughout his career. I'm not saying blindly throw a new kicker into the starting job, but I think it's completely necessary to add a new kicker to the roster to battle with Cundiff for the starting job.

I really like the kid Greg Zuerlein, he is Mel Kiper's top kicker of this years draft class. Apparently he makes 50+ yarders with ease and regularity and I would be ecstatic if we could pick him up as an URFA, or maybe even drop a 7th rd pick on him. A good reliable kicker is extremely important, especially in our offense that struggles to put 6 on the board and relies on our kicker to win games for us. Let me know what you guys think and if you would be willing to drop a day 3 draft pick on a kicker who can consistently make it from 50+ yds, is young and would be a part of our franchise for many years to come. Yeah Cundiff sucks. I've mentioned it many times on these forums.

Honestly, anybody but Cundiff is okay by me. Draft a young guy and let him grow with us.

How can anyone still support Cundiff? If he can't make the field goal to the tie the game in the AFCCG, how can he make the game winner in the Super Bowl?

I would definitely entertain using a 7th round pick on Zuer (forget how to spell the rest of his name, can't look up on a mobile browser). 7th round picks don't always turn out so it would be good.

To me it's not just about that 1 field goal he missed in the afccg, it's about the body of work or lack thereof. Don't get me wrong I am still angry about that missed fg, but it wasn't just his fault, he was working back from an injury and had no time to set up for the fg because Harbaugh didn't call that timeout. It's obvious Cundiff is not the long term solution and that we need to find someone who can make 50+ yarders regularly.

Now back to Greg Zuerlein because that's really what this thread is about, what does everyone think about bringing him in, and if not him who should we bring in to replace or compete with Cundiff.

I hope we draft him some competition atleast. I want a true franchise kicker so bad!
Not one who is overpaid and every time he kicks it 30+ you have to worry about him missing it. I want security knowing he'll make it with the game on the line.....ughhhhhh.

If your reading this I miss you Matt.

I still remember my thread on billy cundiff.

The time when we needed to kick him after week 3 and get a replacement for playoff. Instead everyone bashed me about it (-57negative) and now here we are...

Overpaid, and 4more year of him. You guys sure proved me wrong!

I really like this kid Greg Zuerlein and hope Oz and our scouts have given him a good hard look because I don't think he will go undrafted being as he broke quite a few records. Judging by what I have read he sounds like a rare talent that we should scoop up if we think he's going to get drafted and he is still on the board at the end of the 6th or 7th rounds. I found this exert from an article on a Google search of his name.

The senior from Lincoln Pius X broke an NCAA and MIAA record with 21 straight field goals made, nine of them from 50 yards or more. He made 23 of 24 field-goal attempts, including two school-record 58-yarders.

Yes, We better bring in some competition. Its clear he isnt accurate with long range FG's .. or even mid range. I wouldnt mind spending a 7th rd pick on a kicker or getting a udfa. either way ... Cundiff needs some competition in camp.

Anthony Allen made the team but a lot of seventh rounders do not

No problem with spending a seventh rounder on this new kicker if the promise looks good

I'd say keep Billy Cundiff. You gotta remember he was money in 2010 and he played last year on an injury. Bring someone in as competition but don't cut Cundiff unless that other guy really plays well.

The problem is we just paid Cundiff a big contract. And competition in training camp won't do much good. Cundiff will easily make the kicks on his own turf. It's the high pressure kicks on foreign soil where he is unreliable.

Cundiff chokes so hard in any clutch situation/close game. I would gladly drop a 7th round pick on a reliable kicker, so many 7th round picks get cut anyway I think swooping the year's best kicker might not be a bad idea. I'll take a guaranteed consistent kicker for our team over trying to find a needle in the hay stack skill position player in the 7th round.

What was Cundiff's field goal success in away games? I think the stat was 50% !!!!???!!!

That is completely unacceptable.

Time for a new kicker.

Whoa, guys. Relax a little bit. It happens with kickers. Not making excuses for Cundiff, but he looked off the whole year. I remember some guy posting a thread at the beginning of the season asking what was wrong with him. At the time I thought him not getting as many touchbacks was part of the game plan, but I get this feeling something was up with Billy this year.

I think Billy will rebound with a nice campaign this year. That doesn't mean I don't think we should draft this Zuerlin guy late. I think Billy should get competition. Just don't throw Billy away like that so quickly. I know he has a history of choking, but I have faith in the guy. If he loses in camp, then he loses in camp. He was still a solid kicker for 2010.

Cundiff's moment has come and gone. We have to accomodate his short range and even those aren't a guarantee anymore. Use a 7th rounder on a new guy or pick up someone. There are always kickers looking for a new home.

Haha. I started this thread after the Seahawks game and people said to give him time. Dude is a bum. 76% for his career. What a joke. We need somebody who can hit 50 yarders (and 40 yarders...and 30 yarders).

Cundiff is 76% for his career. His one good year here was an anomaly. There is a reason he bounced around.
