Ravens Cornerback Depth

36 posts in this topic

After releasing Chris Carr and Domonique Foxworth and assuming our 2 free agent corners make it back this is how our cornerback depth looks like-

1.Lardarius Webb
2.Jimmy Smith
3.Cary Williams
4.Chykie Brown
5. Danny Gorrer

Looks pretty good, I think Jimmy Smith will be a starter for us in 2012 and have a breakout year. Webb will continue playing at a high level, Cary will get better and Chykie Will have a chance to show us what he's got.

Webb(26)
Smith(23)
Williams(27)
Brown(25)
Gorrer(25)

We are set.

O how the weak link has now became a strength

Jimmy Smith is seriously only 23? I mean, I know he was a rookie just last year, but I didn't realize how YOUNG he was. And this good already.

Fantastic.

Gorrer would be the 4th CB over Chykie. Not sure if you were giving an exact order or not, but figured I'd throw it out there.

I could see us move Chykie to safety as depth, kinda like Haruki was if we lose him.

I see us getting some UDFA CBs out of this draft, and maybe a 6th or 7th round one as well.

Haruki was always a safety. He saw time in nickel and dime packages but he played safety at Cincinnati and was drafted as one.

I could definitely see Chykie moved to safety. Apparently, he worked there for a bit in practice last season. Some UDFAs, free agents (kinda like Cary and Gorrer), and a draftee, maybe, will all be brought in most likely to battle for a spot or two.

As for Haruki, although its already been stated, he's always been a safety.

I think we could find another keeper through training camp just how we got Cary Williams and Danny Gorrer. Hopefully we can find another CB or DB with potential just like Cary.

That's what I mean. Have Chykie move to safety to play the position that Haruki used to play, coming in on nickel & dime packages. He wouldn't be the same because Haruki was a safety, but I mean in terms of how they would be used as a safety if we converted him to that position.

The funny thing about the CB depth is how much some fans complained about it going into the last 2 seasons. Ozzie screwed up by not paying Josh Wilson, Jimmy Smith was another Pac Man Jones in the making and Webby was nearly run out of town after the playoff loss.

Now, the secondary looks like the strength of our defense. Ozzie continues to show that timing is everything. For years everyone has been screaming to upgrade the secondary and Ozzie just stayed patient until the best opportunity to improve our situation.

Because of Ozzie and his way of doing things, I can the pass rush following the same path of our secondary. People are talking about how the desperately need someone on the other side of Suggs. While we could use additional pass rush, the Ravens still have some young unknowns and potential.

McPhee showed great potential last season, before seemingly hitting the rookie wall. A full offseason of strenght and conditioning should greatly help him. Both Kindle and McAdoo showed flashes of some strong play during the preseason, despite having limited practice time. Kruger has seemingly turned the corner and a full offseason has to be beneficial.

Often times the secondary and pass rush are tightly connected, I think its definitely true wit the Ravens.

Love the depth. I hope we don't lose Zibby or Haruki this offseason though. Yes I know they are S but still

We just have to get some sort of DB through the draft or FA. Possibly a late round safety or free agent. Possibly improve our special teams as well. Haruki was a big part of that.

That's nice depth if they all stay healthy, which is very tough thing to do...would not surprise me if we drafted another CB or brought in another one thru free agency

Hope the CB's stay injury free.

Our CB's scheme is very physical. Someone can easily tear their ACL or get something injured.

Stay healthy!

If Ed stays another 4 or 5 years, imagine what this secondary could be. Webb/Cary/Jimmy in their primes with Ed still lurking (though past his prime). Especially with a pass rush.

Naw, I've been a Mod for a while now. I was on IR last season, so it was hard to notice I was still on the team. Lol

1) Lardarius Webb
2) Jimmy Smith
3) Cary Williams
4) Danny Gorrer
5) Chykie Brown
6) Haruki Nakumara

If someone gets injured or whatever, I wouldn't mind bringing back Chris Carr at a lower salary. What a great Baltimore Ravens D!

I admit, I wasn't really a fan of Jimmy when we drafted him because I thought he would be just another corner on the roster. I wasn't sure he could be the next Revis or Nnamdi (like some are expecting) without a pass rush and I thought we had insanely high expectations for him. But, even though it's only been one season, I'm glad we have him on our roster. If used in bump and run coverage, he will likely be a stellar player for us, and I'm glad we drafted in, looking at it now.

Its hard to say what will or won't happen in the NFL, but pretty evident to me that Carr will not be back. He views himself as a starting CB and the Ravens clearly don't share the same vision.

I expect a late draft pick to be spent on a cb.
[/quote]

Sure
If they see a player with a lot of potential then spend a late round draft pick.
It mightn't work out or they might hit gold.

Danny Gorrer was an UDFA and he's looking very promising

Chris Carr could walk into Indy or New England right now and be a starter on their weak rosters at that position. Could even return to Oakland

He thinks of himself as a starter and he'll get opportunities elsewhere

Hell if Frank Walker can land with the Cowboys then Carr should definitely get a role elsewhere

The fact that Frank Walker ended up on the Cowboys shows how bad that organization has become.
