Could the Colts Trade the #1 Pick?

So the Rams are entertaining offers for #2 could the Colts be intrigued to trade the 1st pick if they could get even more than what the Rams could get which is looking to be a lot!

The only way I see the Colts doing it is if they are 90 percent sure Peyton Manning will play again, and at some point next season. Otherwise, taking Luck makes too much sense. Ultimately, the goal of an NFL franchise is not to win a Superbowl - it's to win as many Superbowls as possible, and if they think Manning is either done or has very few years left, I don't see why they wouldn't take the guy touted as the best to come out since Manning.

However, if they did know Manning would be healthy next season or even the season after, I could see them gambling and trading in the hopes of picking up more picks - people are saying something like 3 firsts and 2 seconds, and if they get smart and trade around like Bellichick always does, they could pick up a ton of talent, maybe something close to the Herschel Walker trade, and be set to make some serious, serious Superbowl runs.

Remember, with Manning, largely this same team made it to a Superbowl 2 years ago and the playoffs last year, and I think Manning is the one quarterback in the league that IS this critical to his team's success - he could probably come back next year and lead that same 2-14 squad back to the playoffs. Imagine what he could do with a Justin Blackmon or a Floyd, or Kalil protecting his blindside and Kendell Wright in the fold. Imagine what that team could get defensively to help their offense.

I think they are 100% set to pick luck. Just glad they aren't in a position to trade manning for additional picks or players cause if proven health teams would give up a lot for him.

I tell you one thing, if Peyton Manning is healthy this throws a wrench into everything. The Colts could really get a bunch of extra picks by just trading the # 1 Pick and keeping Peyton Manning, or they can try for another Super Bowl and try to draft a Matt Kalil or Justin Blackmon and improve the offense that way. Maybe if Peyton is healthy, Reggie Wayne comes back, Jeff Saturday comes back and they add a Justin Blackmon to pair with Wayne, or improve the offensive line with Kalil and slide Anthony Castonzo over to RT. This could leave the Colts with options now.

Could they? Why, yes. Will they? Almost assuredly not. There is such little chance they trade. If I was the GM/Owner of the Colts would I? Absolutely. I do not like Andy Luck that much. He has a lot of potential to be Manning, but he could also be Leaf. There is always a gamble when you pick a player. I guarantee people would've picked Cruz before passing on him and leaving him undrafted.

I would trade the pick for as much as I could and harvest picks for years. I mean let's be real: with a mediocre QB but excellent run game and receivers you can win the SB. An average QB can do it, but they would need talent to do it. With that said, elite QBs still need a line, a run game, good receivers, etc. Manning & Brady would be nothing without their line. I would trade that pick to the Browns for something ridiculous if they would bite.

I know a lot would disagree with me on this, and it may seem silly. But if I was the colts and I knew Peyton would be atleast 90% and have 3-4 more years in him. I would trade it. A franchise QB is worth a lot, and that is almost a sure thing with Luck. They have so many needs on their team, (OL,DL,WR,DB,FB....Just about everything) If they want to rebuild faster I think they would be able to with the amount of picks they could get.

I understand it most likely wont happen because of how old Peyton is while coming off a serious neck injury and how young + great Luck could be but with how much Luck is worth I think they could fix their team up nicely, and then in the future become a well all around team, rather then relying everything on their QB. (QB still must be addressed, dont get me wrong).

I honestly dont believe Luck is "The next Elway." I dont think there is any way to determine that. He may be coming out of college as ready for the NFL as Elways was, but what will he do for the Colts? With their O-line being as poor as it is what if Luck gets injured? Then what do they do? Accept another 2-14 season. Luck will not be Peyton Manning in his first year. Sure Cam Newton played great as a rookie, but he also didnt have so much pressure put on him as the next sure thing elite QB. He is also a different athlete then Luck, and I would even say has a more talented team then Colts.

Peyton Manning is arguably the greatest passer in NFL history. Look at what he made the colts. If he had another 3-4 years left in him, then there is no doubt in my mind that the colts would rebuild for the future with the draft picks they could get for Luck. Just imagine what Dan Snyder would offer to them.

Either way I dont think they will fail drafting Luck or trading the pick. IMO if they trade it, then they could be competing faster then they would if they didnt. Eventually they could build around Luck and in a few years compete for real. A legacy would be damaged, but another would form. ( Maybe. nothing is a sure thing).

All I'm saying really is with how much this #1 pick is worth, It may be better to trade it. Still could be great by just drafting him. But one player shouldnt make a team. (They could.....Manning as an example. But see what happened when he got injured?) Post Mannings era, and lets say they still havent found their franchise QB, they could just turn into a run team. Carter looks good, thats a bright spot on their team. They could end up like the cardinals, or the redskins for a while after that, but I rather have a better overall team then just 1 great player who you must rely on, as well as a poor o-line that will give up probably 25-30 sacks a year.

Imagine them in a 3 way trade involved with the Rams where they move down to the 2nd pick and draft RG3 lol. They could get a ton of picks, and a potential franchise QB. That would be crazy.

Although I believe luck will be very good, it would be awesome if they cut manning & luck flopped. Maybe It's still the bad blood from them leaving us although I'm very satisfied with the ravens now

For all those of you saying the Colts should keep Manning...just remember he had what...four neck procedures in the last year, year and a half? Even if his throwing gets back up to par, that still makes Peyton a liability. One bad hit and he could be in a very bad state.

I say they keep the pick and draft either Luck or RGIII.

The way I see it, the only possibility that they would consider trading the pick would be down to how much confidence they have in Peyton's ability to return 100%. No matter how much improved he's supposed to be right now I'm almost certain they don't take that risk.

It's an interesting thought, but the answer is no - unless a team were willing to give up three first round draft picks, there's no way the Colts trade the rights to Andrew Luck. (Unless they were being compensated with another franchise QB, which isn't going to happen.)

The Colts caught lightning in a bottle -not once, but twice- lucking into the #1 pick the exact two years that the highest rated QB's (Manning, Luck) were on the board. And there's no way they'd just give that away, knowing how much drafting Peyton meant for the city of Indianapolos, the Colts franchise, their getting a new stadium and subsequently hosting a Super Bowl there.

I thought the Colts should have kept Peyton Manning and tried to revamp their defense and offense. They are going to cut Peyton tommorow because they want to get a younger QB. They are forgetting that pretty much their team sucks other than their QB. Manning has been that teams anchor all these years without manning they are a 2 win at best. We all saw that last year. They never had a good defense thats why Peyton always had to lead comebacks, the never had a running game, all they had was a passing game.

They should have kept manning for 1 or 2 more seasons, traded the 1st overall added a running back some god defenders and used a 1st rounder next year on a qb. They are just digging themselvs into a whole again, they should have taken a different route then just another manning era that got them 1 championship. They could be a much better team if they had better GM and front office, but they are going to just leave the fate of their franchise on a guy supposedly to be the future Tom Brady. OK

Colts aren't trading anything now. Come April, the Andrew Luck era in Indy will begin.
