[Blogs] Massive LT Adams To Interview With Ravens

37 posts in this topic

The Ravens have a big-bodied left tackle in Bryant McKinnie. They have 2009 first-round draft pick Michael Oher on the right side and drafted tackle Jah Reid last year.

But when it comes to a massive, athletic tackle that could be available late in the first round like Ohio State’s Mike Adams, Baltimore is interested.

Adams, who has been linked to the Ravens in the first round of mock drafts, told reporters he is set to interview with the Ravens on Wednesday.

Adams is regarded as one of the biggest, most athletic tackles in this year’s draft class. He said he was measured at 6-foot-7, 323 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

But there are some skeletons in the potential first-round pick’s closet. And they’re what he was asked about Tuesday by the media and likely will be asked about by the Ravens.

Adams was suspended for the first two games of the 2009 season after being reportedly charged with running a stop sign and possessing misdemeanor drug paraphernalia.

He was one of five Ohio State players suspended for the first five games of 2011 due to the NCAA rule violation of receiving improper benefits after reportedly selling championship rings, jerseys and awards.

“I’ve had some bumps in the road earlier in my career, but I think I let those things build my character rather than break it down,” Adams said on Wednesday.

“I think my character is something my coaches and teammates at Ohio State will vouch for. Anybody that knows me knows that I’m not a bad guy.”

When it comes to his on-field work, Adams is a physical specimen. He’s expected to be one of the more impressive linemen in terms of the physical drills at the combine.

Adams could fit in with the Ravens as left tackle McKinnie (6-foot-8, 360 pounds) is entering the final year of his contract and will be 33 years old this season. Oher played left tackle last year, but at 6-foot-4, 315 pounds doesn’t have prototypical size for the position.

Adams admitted he needs to work on his consistency with his pass-protection technique, and that he can get his hands too wide and overset at times. But those are issues he and coaches can fix.

One thing that can’t always be found near the end of the first round is Adams’ size and athleticism.

“My athleticism, blocking in space, is definitely a strength,” Adams said. “I like to play through the whistle in the run game. … As an offensive lineman, especially in the NFL, pass protection is where they say you make your money.”

O.K. if the Ravens can get him, go for him! The more time we give Joe, the better he is. The draft is probably the best place to get a cheap, good lineman.

I don't see selling random stuff as a character issue - OSU, the NCAA, and many others make boatloads of money off of him and his team but he gets nada?

The traffic and drug troubles are slightly more damning, though. Of course, it was 2-3 years ago and they said the same thing about Jimmy Smith. All I know is that our OL needs help in a big way.

Hey, if he's there at #29 and Ozzie picks him, I'm fine w/that. In Ozzie, I trust. At this point in time, I'd be skeptical of us picking a tackle w/our first pick (maybe our second), but our OL, to me, is priority one. I would think we have bigger needs, but things may change by then.

Great talent no doubt wouldn't be upset if the Ravens picked him. But if our interior line is questionable with Grubbs and Birk returning I'm just confused on whom they plan on adding to address it, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see in Ozzie we trust.

mckinnie LT adams RT move oher to guard but then we still have to find a center. resigning gurode could be good.

doubt he makes it to 29 though, and even if he does i could see konz coming first

We will be taking one of these guys in the first round if they are available: Mike Adams, Peter Konz or Cordy Glenn. If not we trade down for: Ben Jones, Brandon Washinton, Kelechi Osemele or Kevin Zeitler - then with our 2nd round pick: Vontaze Burfict, Vinny Curry or Chandler Jones

I don't worry about these "problems" a bit. These are things lots of students do, and they don't really shout about loud...
This guy would IMHO be a prototypical Ozzie pick.

I'm worried about how he struggled a bit with speed rushers. If he can study behind McKinnie he should be ok.

Hey if we were to pick him it would be a good future investment. We can always get a good center later in the draft as well. Remember Jason Brown was a 3rd rounder and he is one of the best centers in the league. Oz is really good at drafting lineman. I think Jah Reid could fill the Guard position. If we had Adams then we would have solid depth at the Tackle position to make Jah Reid a starting Guard. Then We draft a Center in the second or third round. We always could pick up a guy like Nick Hardwick. Who knows Konz could somehow magically fall to us in round 2. Wouldn't that be awesome!

id take him.. let him play swing tackle as a backup his first year.. Oher at LG, and Jah at RT.. or he can plug in at RT if Jah struggles.. as for a C.. Brewster from Ohio State could fall to us in the 3rd, or that undersided C they talked about in a previous article posted on here.. im totally drawing a blank to his name.. Oh well, but bolsetering the OLine needs to be top priority in the draft considering its slowly becoming a weak point.. Grubbs more than likely leaving in FA, and Birk/McKinney closer to retirement than anyone would like

Does any one think drafting Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
in the 1st.rd. is a wasted pick. I know we have Smith and Webb but I think he may be the best talent available at that spot. It would be nice to have that kind of talent if someone goes down. Just a thought.

I think he would be a really nice pick they need a left tackle of the future but I much rather see the Ravens either get a center or a ILB with the first pick

Can you say over rated!! In my opinion Nate Potter out of Boise State is better than this guy. And Potter should fall to round 2. This guy's game tape isn't that good. I am sure he will do great things in the combine but I am just not convinced.

I've been looking at this kid ever since last year, when they thought he might come out as a junior. He would be a great pick to intern behind McKinney.

I really like Konz (if that ankle looks stable) for the first pick, and if we could get Adams that would be super.

I wouldn't mind if we got Adams or any other LT because McKinnie is gonna be gone after next season and I think Oher might be gone after the 2013 season (once his rookie contract is up). If we drafted Adams we could put him in once McKinnie leaves at Lt and once Oher leaves Jah Reid would definitely be ready and we could put him in at Rt. I would much rather have Konz or a really good guard/center because that would fill an immediate need, but if Adams is BPA, we should get him. My only concern would be that he would be like Oher, very physically talented but doesn't have it all together mentally.

I'm really trying to be open minded on the draft and free agency. We definitely can't go wrong by drafting either defense or offense. I'd really love to see a center picked in the later rounds rather than waste a first round pick on Konz. I don't think that any of the top rated tackles will be there by the time we draft. In Oz I trust!

IF we can get him, Konz and Burfict or Hightower, it will great. Dreaming? No since Jimmy, Torrey and Jah landed right on us last year like we wanted ;)
