LOL! It's the headline on our own front page. http://blogs.baltimo...oney-to-grubbs/

Now you know where PFT gets their news. They just gather reports from others.

Pretty interesting that Harbaugh said:

“We’ve offered – I don’t know if we’ve offered it yet – but
we’re in negotiations of offering a lot of money,” Head Coach John Harbaugh told Jerry Coleman on 105.7 The Fan last night from the combine."

I would be interested to know what he thinks a lot of money is? I'm saying a 5 year deal worth 28 million.
That sounds like a reasonable deal to me, and it is a lot of money. It wouldnt surprise me if he gets a little more up front than Yanda as players always like guaranteed money and it could potentially help our cap more that way.

The way John worded it makes me feel they already offered hm something, and he turned it down. But I love that they're telling us that they are really trying to resign Grubbs.
If Grubbs,Rice, and Joe all get resigned then this would be a great offseason.

Would we have the Cap in order to pay him something similar to Yanda? I find it hard to believe we can give Grubbs something close to Yanda while trying to get Rice under a long term contract, with having to worry about Joe next off-season.

Ozzie hinted that there are some cuts coming early in March to free up some cap space.

Hinted? I think he came right out and said it: http://blogs.baltimoreravens.com/2012/02/24/ravens-plan-to-make-cuts-in-coming-weeks/

Good, let's hope we are good enough to out smart the Steelers and show them how to manage the cap and keep your star players without going over the cap lol. Foxworth regardless he is cut or retires will save us cap, Ricky has already saved us 1 million or so due to him retiring, so hopefully we get things done where we are able to re-sign Grubbs, Franchise Rice and keep Webb as well.

I agree that Grubbs, Rice and Webb are priorities.

I have a good feeling that we'll be able to keep him. I think that we're going to release Carr,Foxworth, and either restructure Lee Evans deal or release him. I hope we do keep Lee for another year, and I think we will.

I think if the Ravens are offering about the same numbers they gave Yanda, we can sign Grubbs. He understands the business. THe Ravens are trying to build something and I think Grubbs wants to be part of it, he just needs to be treated fairly

I was thinking last night what might be a reasonable contract that we could offer Grubbs that would be both cap-friendly and fair to him.

I think a 5 year deal would be appropriate, but I dont see him getting the 6M+ per year range that Yanda got. For one Yanda has played a significant amount of time at Tackle and offers that flexibility that Grubbs does not. Grubbs has been durable, but last year he did miss some time and that could be reflected in the contract.

Here is what I came up with 5 years, 24M with 12M guaranteed. This would give Grubbs a large chunk of change up front and would allow for a smaller cap hit the first couple years.

For instance it could be structured like this:

Base salaries: 1st year 1M, 2nd year 1.5M, 3rd year 2M, 4th year 3.5M, 5th year 4M.

With a 12M dollar signing bonus the cap hit would be:

1st year 3.4M, 2nd year 3.9M, 3rd year 4.4M, 4th year 5.9M, 5th year 6.4M.

Grubbs would average close to 5M a year which I think is fair for a player of his caliber, but the cap hit wouldnt be too bad until the 4th year. It could probably be made even more cap friendly early if a roster bonus or workout bonuses were added in.

Thoughts?
Agree. No more or less than 5 years. I agree with your estimated money as well. I like Ben Grubbs; he seems like a nice guy and is too valuable for the Baltimore Ravens to lose.

Am I the only one who thinks McClain is overrated around here? I mean, he did an admirable job but he is not a critical piece of our defense or anything. We can survive just fine without McClain.

I think McClain is just going to be another Chris Carr.

I would definitely rather have Grubbs back than McClain.

They are 2 different pay grades... Grubbs will get a high tier and McClain a midlevel... I think McClain outside of Willis in San Fran is the closest to an heir apparent to Lewis as we can find... Lewis has tutored him the longest and he plays with the same mentality. McClain can lead the defense and they trust him and it showed when Lewis was out and that matters... do you want a draft pick to fill in next or year after or Ellerbee or a direct understudy that showed he can make the move.

Clearly you will invest more into Grubbs than McClain, there's no denying that. And I do not believe that McClain is the next heir apparent to Ray Lewis. I don't think the next heir apparent to Lewis is on this team yet, and if he is we aren't aware of his talent. I do not like Ellerbe and won't cry if he doesn't return.

I also think it is overrated to say that these linebackers NEED Ray to show them the ropes and stuff. Our team oozes with Ray Lewis' personality and imprint. His blueprint has been lined throughout our entire defense.

In fact, I think a linebacker we draft will have an easier time coming in here and taking over the defense after Lewis has left than before.

But that's just my opinion.

I wasn't really worried about the offensive line until Grubbs went down with the toe injury. His durability was never in question before this past season and will probably weigh heavily in any decision to sign him to a long-term, high priced contract. Gurode did an adequate job as a replacement player, but a big rookie in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft will be good enough to sure up the line now that Birk is returning. I see our starting lineup as Oher, McKinnie, Yanda, Grubbs (or rookie), and Birk. It would make more sense to me to add a lineman for depth, even if it's Gurode, who has a year of familiarity with the blocking schemes.

Gurode can only play back up at center nothing else... He was terrible at the tackle position and not very salvageable at the guard..
Gurode filled in at tackle this year? I must have missed that part.

Whoa...sorry, but we cant pay grubbs yanda's money. We are strapped. Hope he can come for a little less.
says who? where are you getting your info from where strapped? we currently have 4.6 of cap space after rickys retirement, if we re work flaccos deal we will have more room, cut fox saves $5.6mil, evans $4.375mil, carr after 1 june 2.5, thats an extra $12.5 mill. If you say Rices Tag would be 7.7, that means we have the best part of 5 for grubbs. Add in extra cuts to give more space we have room to resign guys at reasonable rates, but we wont be making an big splashes in FA

Whether or not we can afford it, it's still rare for a team to tie up huge $$ on their interior line... that's what the tackles are for!

No, you didn't miss anything. Gurode never played tackle for us.

The Carroll County Times' Aaron Wilson is "hearing" the Bears will be a potential landing spot for free agent LG Ben Grubbs if he is not re-signed by the Ravens.
Grubbs has been expected to reach the open market, but coach John Harbaugh insisted in a radio interview last week that the Ravens were going to "really make a run" at re-signing him. The Bears ended 2011 with former undrafted free agent Edwin Williams at left guard.

We need Grubbs. Our o-line suffered heavily without him this year, and losing him would be a disaster. Rice can't run and Flacco can't pass if there is nobody to block.

The game is won and lost in the trenches, and having Yanda and Grubbs protecting the interior can set the tone for this team offensively.

Hopefully they can reach a fair and cap friendly number, because we do need to upgrade at the tackle position. Oher and McKinnie are capable, but average. I dunno what we really have in Reid, but he could be an answer at one of those positions. This is the make or break year for Oher, so lets see what he does.

Grubbs played week 1 then was out for 7 including the bye week 2-9.

I don't recall the Ravens going 1-5 while he was out for those 6 games? So while it would be nice to have him on the O-Line. I don't think our entire season tanks without him. Lets be real here.

To me it would all be "what are we giving up to retain Grubbs?" Our big 3 are Rice, Webb, and Grubbs. If Rice and Webb are givens, then to resign Grubbs we are no doubt parting with JJ, maybe McClain, and probably most of our other free agents. Signing him would mean that almost all other free agents are off the table. So, no big name wide receivers, no offensive tackles, no impact pass rushers. Keeping Grubbs means we don't have to worry about guard, but probably have holes at WR, left tackle, center, ILB, OLB/DE, possibly safety. Letting Grubbs leave may mean we can fill one or two of those voids via free agency. So it's all about what the front office wants to do.
