Salary Cap Questions

14 posts in this topic

not to ruin your day but i have a few questions on the most hard to understand thing ever: the salary cap. I wanted to know how salary cap numbers differ as to when you trade somebody or release somebody. If trading had nothing to do with cap space, i think everybody would try to trade. the ravens have released extremely more than traded because it gives you more cap room when you release someone. Right? Also, how would signing a player create more cap room? i thought it would create less because were spending more money. im sure a little explanation is all it will take

You see a lot more guys released because they have such high salaries. In most cases, other teams aren't willing to give up anything due to the price tag. I wouldn't say you get more cap room by releasing someone per se. It's just hard to find a taker in most cases.

I thought the only thing we take a hit on when we release someone is if we had guaranteed money involved or any type of roster/incentive bonuses... I'm probably wrong.

The total cap figure for a certain player is the combined base salary for that year as well as the pro-rated percentage of any bonuses.

For example Foxworth was signed to a 4 year deal for 28 million I believe. I don't know the exact numbers off the top of my head but a good chunk of that money, let's say 12M, came up front in the form of a signing bonus. That 12M bonus is pro-rated across the length of the contract so each year would have an additional 3M against the cap on top of the base salary. The other caveat with bonus money is that if a team were to cut a player early on in the contract, then all of the bomus money that has not yet been allocated against the cap will either go agaisnt that years cap or be kept on as "dead money" for the next year's cap.

Sorry if that was confusing, essentially what makes the cap difficult is bonuses that go against future year's salary caps. Trading a player or cutting a player shouldn't make a difference, the salary cap savings will be the base salary of the player that was let go. Any bonuses that the player received will still go against the cap.

Yes. That is a very accurate description of how the Cap works.

If you sign a guy long term like flacco you can work his contract that his cap number is lower this year than what it is before. You pay him less this year and w lot more in the later years. It's called back loading a contract to create space now.

Also a cut trade retirement all have the same savings.

You could just have asked this in ravours cap thread instead of creating a new one

To put it in simple terms if we cut foxworth and lee evans and restructure some contracts our cap could be close to 98M which is nearly 25M under which would allow us to make a lot of moves as far as bringing some of our playmakers back.

the problem with restructuring these contracts is that we are mortgaging our cap card as Biscoitti would say. We want to avoid this so we don't end up like the Steelers. I agree that we need to resign some guys, but not at the cost of being a perennial contender/threat to win it all
