To ensure that if he is still playing at a high level you don't have to be rushed to sign him.

It wouldn't be the first 7 yr contract in the nfl. It wouldn't be the first one where s in yrs 6 and 7 were not guaranteed yet you are surprised to hear it as an option...why?
if you sign him to a 7 year deal and he get sinjured later in his career or else his play declines when he hits 29/30 like most RBS, if you cut him you have to carry dead cap space against the years he had left on his contract.. so if you cut him after 5 yrs because he cant preform well (30 yrs old after 5) you would be carrying dead cap for 2 years. So your better to sign him to 5, then if he plays well extend him..

Only on guaranteed money and that would be the same for a player that gets hurt yr 1 of a 4yr deal too. Only way to offset is,an injury settlement if you release an ir player.

think of it like this, all those 2 and 3 yr contracts we get FAs to sign doesn't inhibit the team from cutting them and signing someone, else after that first yr.

stop being scared and stop acting like the number ”7” makes things more difficu than the number ”4”

Yeah because,a contract wouldn't be reworked or player cut before the 7th yr...
So why the hell would you offer a 7 year contract then?

Ok, first off I love Ray Rice. He is one of my favorite Ravens and I want him on this team for years to come. This makes absolutely ZERO sense. The only thing I am scared of is the Ravens giving Ray Rice a contract that doesnt make sense and cripples the team financially, like signing him for 7 years. 7 years is a heck of a lot different than 4 or 5 years because by the end of it Rice would be approaching 32 years old and will probably, like most RBs, see a dramatic drop-off in production. Now who in their right mind wants to pay a 32 Ray Rice the same as a 25 year old Ray Rice? Then the problem becomes a situation like we had with Willis. A guy who is no longer a feature back making money like he is one. Only this time around it would be even worse because Rice is likely to get a large chunk of change upfront in guaranteed money which becomes "dead money" against the cap. Just bad news all around.

I see Rice getting a 5 year deal 42M with 25M guaranteed. 7 years for a running back is ludicrous.

no what i mean is the signing bonus is split over the no. or years he signs, so if say we gave him 7 yrs and a 28 mil signing bonus, for cap purposes that is split over the 7 yrs evenly, ie 28/7 is 4mil a year, so if you cut him after yr 5, you have to carry that 4mil yr 6 and 7 as dead money them two years, why be stupid and do that?? just sign him to 5 years and if he is still procuctive extend him.

7 Years for a RB is ridiculous, look at AP

Anything over 5 years is crazy to me. He's young but he's a workhorse back and he get carry while being used in the passing game. He would be about 30 the time its up and I would experience his play to have declined by then. 7 years is too much.

rice is our offense. we perform well as long as he is playing well. grubbs misses at least 4-6 games a season due to injury. he is good. but he is not that good that you put him over rice on your list.

rice is the face of the ravens besides rayray. he should get paid. i don´t want him to sign a small deal. he is the best at what he is doing. we have maybe two or three other guys on the team that you can say are the best at what they are doing. grubbs for sure isn´t the best at his position. he is very good. that´s it.

i know how important those guards are. especially for our running game. but take away the 2k yards of rice from our offense and there isn´t that much left...

eve4n better: he is great against the steelers and the pats!!!!
I'm fairly certain that Grubbs hasn't missed extensive time, if any time at all from an injury until this year.

Oh, and take away our guards and see how many of those 2000 yards are left.

It would be hard to play 9 vs 11

Yeah a solid Oline is imperative to a RB's success. Although our RG has been a revolving door. Its not like Yanda has been there playing at a high level for the past 3 years.

NFL Network just named Ray Rice as the "Most Valuable Bargain" in the entire league last year.
Sounds about right... along with Forte, if he hadn't blown out his knee... no one else carried the offenses for their teams like those guys did.
