What Are You Reading Right Now?

I just finished re-reading all the Chuck Palahnuik novels, including his latest "Damned". If you have not read any of his work, I highly recommend reading "Damned". Far too satirical to pass up.

"The Skeleton Crew" by Stephen King, a collection of his short stories - including "The Mist".
'The Mist' is one of my absolute all-time number one King favorites. Every time I see pea soup fogs I expect to see giant bug legs sticking out the bottom. That story still gives me the creeps and I love it! :)

And I am currently in the midst of a huge Tolkien fit. Read 'The Children of Hurin' and 'Fellowship'. Now reading 'The Two Towers' and have ' Return of the King' and volume 12 of 'The History of Middle Earth': 'The Peoples of Middle Earth' and after that 'The Silmarillion' and 'The Hobbit'. :D

It was really good, you're probably right, one of his scariest. I wasn't crazy about the ending but it is what it is.

And you're joking! I'm reading through Tolkien, too. Finished 'The Hobbit' a few weeks ago and now making my way through the LOTR triology, a little more than halfway through 'The Fellowship'

George R.R. Martin's "A Dance with Dragons." Started reading the books after I stumbled across the HBO 1st season, then the second season and I finally had to read the books. A pretty expansive series and some of the books are a bit daunting in length (1100 pages!) but very well written; hard to put them down once you start!

Just started reading "The Bears of Blue River" by Charles Major. They are currently having The Bears of Blue River festival in my hometown. I've always heard the story of how the statue depicted below came to be, but have never thought to read the story. So, I bought a copy at the city museum. I've already noticed there are some mentions of local rivers & popular hangouts along those rivers. Although fiction, it has been a great read thus far.

Actually, the statue was made from copper and I'm sure you've seen a green penny before. It's one of those slow chemical reactions that happen. When copper comes in contact with water or oxygen, the copper coats itself to protect itself from further oxidation. The coating is called "patina". Much in the same way when water or air comes in contact with iron, only it's called rust.

The process is known as tarnishing.

Huh. I understand tarnishing. That looks like buckets of bird crap though, lol.

I actually heard on Animal Planet, that geese are the only bird that can control when they poop. Man, I'd hate to be a bird on a first date.

Me (as a bird): So, uh, Robin... (grunt) ...Oh man! Not now!

Just started reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. I am finding it hard to put down. It's incredibly well written and touches on a lot of issues. Plus, it revolves around the life of a woman from Baltimore.

Ok so I didn't get to The Hobbit.

I am now on a WWII kick again and first on the agenda is Max Hastings' 'Inferno: The World At War, 1939-1945'--his one volume book on the war. After that, 'Retribution: The Battle for Japan, 1944-1945'.

Started reading the "Gaunts Ghosts" series by Dan Abnett again.
Definitely worth a look if you like scifi/war novels.

For the history and WWII buffs, I can't recommend Hastings too highly. Inferno is freaking amazing....utterly utterly amazing. I have yet another author to collect! :)

Sounds good! Does it cover all sides of the war or is it about the USA's contribution?

Just got through Frankenstein and The Picture of Dorian Gray through summer. Now I'm going modern and will be grabbing Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Here's to my happiness, because I've heard all kinds of warnings about that book "dismantling my soul piece by piece".

Curious, when did this book come out? I only ask as I used to be part of a forum where we'd post short stories, poems, etc. And I recall a group of people who were doing this exact same thing.

Do the stories seem to be based on the same idea, but only each author's characters are in different cities?

Was it adapted to a movie? I can't imagine how depressing a book it must be if so. I watched the movie once and forced myself to watch it twice. No happy there.

Quick Google search shows that it was, with the lead played by Aragorn himself.

Yeah. That's the one. Good luck, its a gut punch of a movie. The book must be a very very difficult read.

I believe it came out in June or July. And each other uses different characters in different cities.

Have you finished the book... or are you far enough in... that I could supply you with some written text via PM and you can tell me if any of it is the same or not?

EDIT: Could you tell me the setting of some of the stories, like the city names?
