The only reason to ask our guys to restructure is if we plan to make a big splash in free agency.

Otherwise there is no need.

If we release foxworth & evans, according to JH from ESPN, that would be 19million dollar under the cap.

We need Ray Rice, Webb, Grubbs, and even possibly Flacco under contract. Lets just assume in rough estimate that it would be around 9m+7m+5m+11m = 34m. Which leaves around 15m to free up.

We already assume foxworth/evans is out. And assuming Ray Rice/Webb/Joe/Grubb is now signed here are the rest to keep or kick..

I see Cary Williams, Jameel McClain, Aynabadejo, Nakamura, and possibly Zibi staying. We also need a LT(would probably cost around +5m in FA).

The problem is who is there to restructure? Maybe Yanda or Anquan. Suggs and Ngata already have a relatively low base salary, but I think they could free up 4-5M combined. Carr could be released for a small savings, but that seems unlikely to me. If we restructured all 4 of them I think it would save around 9M for this year's cap. Maybe it's worth it, and it might have to be done if Webb gets an offer. However, I dont think we will extend Webb unless we have to.

Also if we do extend Joe and Rice which both seem likely to get done, the immediate cap impact may not be as high as you indicated because their contracts could be backloaded as well. Joe's contract in particular will probably not change the cap for this year too much as he is already due a pretty significant amount on his rookie deal.

I'm seeing all the restructuring the Steelers are doing and I must say, don't you think it makes the Steelers players upset about having to restructure their contracts just because the Steelers couldn't manage the cap right and are basically asking the players to take pay cuts to bail them out for their own mistakes. Honestly, if the Steelers would have done their Homework a little better on the Cap, maybe they wouldn't be in this situation but don't ask the players to take a pay cut just because they can't do math and wound up over the salary cap.

You have a misguided view of what restructuring a contract means. No one is losing money of these players. It is actually beneficial, monetary wise, for the players to restructure. Say a players salary is $5.7 Mill and he gets restructred down to a salary of $700,000. That means that he restructured and saved his team that money. That $5 Mill he took off his contract is given to him that moment in a signing bonus that is then pro rated over the remainder of their contract for their cap.

So instead of taking his $5.7 Mill over the 17 weeks of game checks, the player is receiving $700,000 in game checks and $5 Mill today. Net present value of money actually puts the player in a better financial standing.

Also, the Steelers have one of the leagues best cap guys in Omar Khan (sp.?). I have read many articles of teams potentially targeting him for GM positions.

Hensley's never been particularly good about tracking the salary cap. His "$8.5M under" figure only includes the 44 players that are presently under contract and doesn't include the RFA and EFA tenders that won't be made until early March.

So, his numbers are misleading. Those tenders will eat up quite a lot of that cap space that he is projecting.

Exactly, restructing deals is not what teams want to do, but it's what they have to do at times, but it comes at an expense.

They are creating cap space now, it's coming at the expense of future cap space - and it's cap space that they cannot get back.
