yea... very seriously .

I mean don't get me wrong they are far from being heavy, but to not call them metal is just ridiculous.

This version is better IMO

Looks almost impossible to play on bass

That's actually not the bass player that was on the original recording. His name is Adrian Davidson (I believe), that's definitely not him. Also, what the hell is with the NASA suits?

For Paul Gilbert's album videos, he decided that they would wear NASA suits, and yes I know that is not the original Racer X group. The only one who's actually from Racer X is Gilbert.

Skimming over this thread, noticing most of the metal talk is on its formation in the late 60s-early 70s. That's well and good, I love some Maiden, Sabbath (especially the Dio years) and the like. And music in general has become such a barren scene the last few years in regards to bands who are doing what they want and pushing their own unique sound that I more than understand sticking with the classics.

However, if you guys consider yourselves metal fans, especially progressive metal as I've read Dream Theater mentioned a few times, you need to listen to Between the Buried and Me's "The Parallax II: Future Sequence." Now I have always considered myself a fan of the band as far back as their '03 album "The Silent Circus" but they were never one of my true favorites. They had really been pushing the envelope with their last couple of releases "Colors" and "The Great Misdirect" but Future Sequence has me floored, it is the most amazing album I have heard in years, easily the best release of '12 despite two of my "favorite" heavier bands releasing new stuff earlier in the year. Future Sequence is an incredible journey from start to finish. Beautiful at times, punishing at others, hyper complex at one point, hauntingly simple at others. The album just flows and is musicianship at its finest. The album itself looks like a book and the lyric booklet reads much the same as it follows the album's 2 characters (Prospect 1 and Prospect 2) on their journey across time and space to rectify the inherent problems with humanity. If you've read this much of my tirade, you owe it to yourself to check this out ASAP, haha.

Found this video on youtube, a great example of what you're saying. There's definitely some awesome guitar work.

Certainly gets props for originality! Hadn't even noticed that wasn't Scott Travis on drums. I believe he's still with Judas Priest? Gilbert may be one of the greatest guitar players that most people don't even know about.

Yup I like how he shreds but is totally into the Hendrix/Rush style. My favorite guitar player easily, so humble and down to earth.

Yes, excellent example. They have a full video for the track "Astral Body" from this album if you're interested. Its certainly unique music that may not be up everyone's alley, but if you can appreciate music you can't help but notice the talent these guys have.

He is God in music form

So very true! I remember watching the Grammy's a few years back and he put 99% of modern artists on blast. It was fantastic!

I really miss the good ol' days of The Cadavers, Tub Ring, Glassjaw and Reveille (before Bleed The Sky)... yeah, metal just isn't what it used to be.

Dunno if I would call Tub Ring or Glassjaw metal, but I definitely agree with the sentiments. I was actually just revisiting Tub Ring's "The Great Filter" a few days ago and Glassjaw supposedly has a new album in the works, though the Coloring Book EP that they came out last year (I think?) was a bit disappointing though.

But yeah modern "metal" seems to be turning into the new pop in a lot of ways. Sad, sad times...

I remember the good ol' days of going to the Emerson Theater to see Tub Ring & The Cadavers on the same night. Mosh pitting for two-hours. Never had better six-pack abs in my life. But yeah... Glass Jaw's first album was amazing.. the second one was all right.. and everything after that was... well... sub-par.

The Cadavers are no longer around. There is another band called the Cadavers, but nothing close to the ones I used to watch. And Reveille, the first album was good and then they decided to be too much like Linkin Park.

Reveille isn't metal. It's good music, but it's not metal..

Metal... rap-metal... nu-metal... still metal. :P

Like I said, the early stuff, before Bleed The Sky.

God help us if Nu-Metal ever becomes very popular. Anyway, Everyone who likes this genre needs to listen to Sixx AM's album "The Heroin Diares Soundtrack." By far the best album I've ever heard. The tone is dark, the lyrics are disturbing but still very deep and meaningful, and the vocals are absolutely amazing.

If this isn't metal... I don't know what is...

Dang, they should have given the bass player a voice program.

It'd be awesome to hear a digital, "If you like to gamble, I'll tell ya I'm your man!"

It's just nice to see that General Grievous was able to find work after Star Wars.

I always wondered what happened to Chim-Chim from Speed Racer... now I know.

Lol....So I need some help. Obviously there is a difference between Metal and Hard Rock. I can hear the difference and tell when music is each, but how do I describe the difference, because it is a very fine distinction. For example, Motley Crue is Metal, by GNR is hard rock. How do I explain the difference?

Some songs of both Crue and GNR can be considered hard rock. I dont know what the definition is :(

Yeah but overall they are considered to fall into the respective categories. I wish I could just transfer the unconscious distinction to other people.
