Steelers Hire Todd Haley as OC

50 posts in this topic

I'm surprised they wanted Haley, I have a somewhat unfavorable opinion of him. I don't remember the Chiefs being so great on offense the past couple years, and when you're coaching Tom Brady or Kurt Warner, you're likely going to have a good offense.

Roethlisberger is complaining every which way about it. At a certain point, he just has to shut up, stifle his self-inflicted drama, and say "We're going to do great things with Todd Haley."

I know this is a crazy notion, but is it possible the Steelers draft a quarterback this year? Ben is getting older, getting beat up, getting injured a lot. I could seriously see them draft a quarterback. I also remember them shopping Ben around a little back when they sent Santonio packing.

They probably will draft a QB for the reasons you noted above.

Unless they decide to invest everything in Troy Smith, because after all, he was a Heisman Trophy winner so he absolutely should be a starter in the NFL!

LOL...oh the North just keeps getting more and more interesting...

How is he an improvement over Arians? Can someone please answer that for me?
Well, time will tell. To put it in a way that Ravens fans would understand, imagine the Ravens dumping Cam and hiring Haley. I bet most of you would be stoked. Arians is no better than Cam in our view. Sure he was good between the 20s but he was a terrible play caller in the red zone and would also do stupid moves like draw up slow developing plays while Ben is hobbling, throw bubble screens on third and three or fail to make any in-game adjustments when his game plan isn't working. He also refused to utilize a proper fullback. Haley's goal is to score as many points as possible. Arians' goal was to rack up as many yards as possible. Unfortunately yards does not equal points as evidence of our 12th ranking in yardage and 22nd ranking in scoring.

I for one am eager to see what Haley can do with this offense.

I don't really see how he's anything more than a below-average coordinator.

You can give him all the credit you want for his time in Arizona, but he had Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. If you don't have a prolific offense with those weapons then you don't belong in the NFL.

KC were mediocre without Weiss. He made Cassel serviceable enough to get the ball to Dwayne Bowe and fed Jamaal Charles. Haley's been incredibly lucky to work with very talented players. I think he's an awful coordinator, but that's as much to do with his horrendous personality.
I suggest looking at Kurt Warner's stats between 2002 and 2007 and claim he didn't drastically improve when Haley took over as OC in Arizona.

http://www.nfl.com/player/kurtwarner/2503540/careerstats

Arians is a good example of what a bad OC can do to an offense. Look at all the weapons at his disposal, yet the offense was 22nd in scoring. A little of that had to do with lack of turnovers by the defense but a lot of it was due to poor situational play calling, particularly in the red zone. Our offense had no problem racking up yards between the 20s but was very inept at turning that yardage into points.

Are the Steelers still planning on going back to a "Ground and Pound" offense? I don't see Todd Haley as a "Ground and Pound" OC. He certainly doesn't have the quality O-Line and RB situation that he had in KC. At this point anyway.
As Haley stated, he isn't a system guy. He calls the plays that best utilize the offense (yeah!) rather than say we're a running team or a passing team. He said if he needs to run it 62 times a game to score the most points, then he'll do that. If he needs to pass 62 times a game, then he'll do that. A lot of that will be determined by how Mendenhall recovers from his ACL injury. I just hope they pick up a real fullback this off season.

Yes it is very odd. I thought the Steelers were going to push the run style offense because they are 25 million over the cap and how can you afford Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown, both Pro Bowlers this year, and cut down on cap? Maybe they're trying to make one last run?

Todd Haley would seem a good fit for their offensive personell, but I thought the owner already dictated what direction he wanted the offense to head in. It's an odd fit tbh..
I'm not concerned at all about them being able to resign Wallace and any ohter free agents. They already cut Battle and McFadden, both dead weight and then restructured Ike and Wood. They've already cut over $10M from their cap number. Ward will be forced to take a pay cut as will Hampton if he isn't cut. Aaron Smith will likely retire. There will be a few more moves and I won't be surprised if Ben is restructured. There's a lot of options and I'm confident in Omar Kahn's ability to manage the cap. We'll get back all the players we want, sign a free agent or two and sign our draft class. Some of the old guard will be gone and younger players who've been mentoring behind them will need to step up. Such is life in the NFL.

Either the Rooney's have changed their mind or this hiring was to appease Ben since he was reportedly upset over the firing of Arians.
Haley was hired without Ben even being informed about it. He was told after the fact. The Rooneys run the team, not Ben.

No they're a few years away from having to do that. This is Ben's 9th season coming up and he's only 30 this year. They may draft a late round QB as a back-up but they have bigger needs that will be higher priority (NT, OL, DB). They never shopped around Ben. Did you read that from Bleacher Report? The whole Ben for Sam Bradford thing was complete BS.

We're still recovering from a Bleacher Report article citing our message board as a source for a Jared Gaither-Nnamdi Asomugha trade, years ago. That was a mess for us. -_-

We are?

I remember it, but I don't see why we'd be the ones recovering from it. Who cites a team's message board as a source? I mean, seriously?

I honestly don't remember the source at all. I just remember hearing about it, so there is no credibility other than I remember hearing about it. It was right after he was accused of the second rape or whatever with that girl in Georgia (?) I think it was. It was the 2011 season when he missed the first four games due to the suspension that resulted from that incident.

Regardless, I could see them look at a quarterback somewhere in the draft for multiple reasons. It's a nice draft for quarterbacks, they could groom him, and then use him as a back-up. Dennis is their best back-up and he might even be gone. Batch is a manager. Troy Smith is Troy Smith.

I personally see them targeting OL in the 1st and a DL in the 2nd. Probably go with a DB in the third. I keep hearing people projecting Hightower to them, but I don't see them drafting an ILB in the 1st or 2nd round.

I hear ya but didn't the Rooney's say they wanted to get back to a "blue collar" offense? True "blue collar" could be interpreted many different ways but a lot of people automatically associate that with a more bruising running style of offense. And as you pointed out, the Rooney's run that team. Not Ben, not Tomlin, and certainly not Haley.

I really hate you for making me admit this, really I do but......no. I'd rather be stuck with Cam than have cry-baby emotionally unstable Haley here.

It's gonna be fun seeing Haley get pissed at Harbs twice a year at least.
Well that and I do believe Tomlin might have to play referee between Haley and Ben from time to time lol

Steelers fans will love it when he's crying about teams running up the score on them, even though he's just the O.C. /sarcasm
I know. He did that with us in the preseason and I bet he'll do it twice in 2012. Todd Haley is a jerk, and matches much of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Go Baltimore Ravens!
