Stadium Nicknames

27 posts in this topic

Ok. Im really curious about this. The Gator stadium is nicknamed the Swamp. I was wondering first if the Ravens, Orioles, or Terps stadiums have any nicknames. Second, I wanted to know if there were any stadiums anywhere else you guys know of that have cool nicknames.

I knew that, but that seems cliche. I was looking for something unique and mascot related, like Birdland.

Oh hell no. Birdland???

Sounds like some sort of 1950s, run-down amusement park.

Its actually a Jazz song from the early 60's. But I was just making a point. Are there any stadiums outside of Maryland that have neat nicknames?

I love the stadium here in Tampa with the pirate ship at one endzone. No nickname though, just cannon fire with each score. It's pretty bad [profanity deleted].

I read an Onion article before the 2010 season about the teams, and the one for the Buccs was pretty funny. They said : Looking at this roster, it may not be the best year to play in a stadium where fans have access to several functioning cannons

Lol. That's funny. They are actually very loud but certainly not fully functional.

A lot of people call M&T Stadium either The Vault or The Museum. I don't think I've heard the Orioles stadium called anything but Camden Yards or OPACY, for short.

the Oreos did "bird land " some time ago. They had a jingle and all "Come to bird land " they would sing.

In San Diego they call Quallquam stadium "The Q "

Verizon Center is known as "The Phone Booth"

EDIT: Just remembered this, but Chase Field, where the Arizona Diamondbacks play, was Bank One Ballpark when it was first built (until Chase bought Bank One), everyone called it "Bob"

LOL I want a ballpark named 'Bob'.

Our Atlantic League baseball stadium here in town is Sovereign Bank Stadium. We call it the Vault. Our left-field wall is taller than the Green Monster in Fenway. We call the wall the Arch Nemesis (Arch Street is the street outside on that side of the stadium.)

Bob....what a great name for a stadium. And the Q is a lot easier to pronounce than Quallquam.
I can note Neyland Stadium - the University of Tennessee's football home - being called "Rocky Top", after the song written by felice and Boudelaux Bryant and recorded in 1967.

The Bengals should steal Michigan's idea and nickname their stadium "The Big House", given the most recent Maualuga incident.
