Anybody Have Access To Dilfer's Quarterback Rankings On Espn?

10 posts in this topic

Didn't know where to put this, but I figured since it's about football but not just about the Ravens, it fits here best. I just saw Trent Dilfer posted his new quarterback rankings, and he says he included league "perception" in as part of it. If he did, I'd be shocked if Joe even made the list, lol. Just curious to see who Trent thinks is the best, and where Joe fits. If anyone could let me know, I'd appreciate it, thanks.

The list is pretty comprehensive. Trent has Joe under the "A Ring Away" category, along with Rivers, Romo, Ryan, Stafford, Cutler and Schaub.

His description of this category is:

"This category reflects quarterbacks who have the shown the ability to play at an elite level or are winning at an elite level and need a Super Bowl win to validate the perception of them. They don't have job-security questions and have proved vital within their offenses. Most display a solid career trajectory and have proved themselves as winners, if not title winners."

And he has this to say about Flacco:

"Enigmatic but quietly pretty good, too, with elite arm strength. I put Flacco here because I think his trajectory could continue to get better with more help and a different offensive philosophy. He played well enough to get his team to the Super Bowl this year."

I like to peruse (creep around) other teams' forums when I'm bored. I noticed someone on the Falcons forum posted the article in full. Of course, they're more interested in talking about Matt Ryan but here's what Dilfer said on Flacco:

I put Flacco here because I think his trajectory could continue to get better with more help, and also a different offensive philosophy. The ending really worries me. I know we're stuck with Cam as the OC but all I really want to see is less vanilla. I want the little things like putting Q in the slot more, using more bunch formations, rub routes to help receivers beat man coverage, and more bubble screens. Can you send the recievers in motion more often or have your RBs/TEs chip opposing pass rushers when your OL is struggling? Keep the defense on edge and unpredictable.

All this stuff is really to the benfit of your own offense. Execution is always the main priority but by mixing it up and using different variations and schemes it could go long way in helping your whole unit do better in the pass, run, and blocking areas. That unpredicability can greatly help Flacco because the defense is left on it's heels to guess what you're about to do. They don't dictate the game plan, you do.

Flacco, rivers, romo, stafford, ryan all listed as winners that need a ring to validate them?

Seriously only ones with playoff wins are rivers and flacco. Well romo has one. Stafford has one playoff game that he lost. Ryan no playoff wins. Romo and rivers have also struggled to be consistent playoff qbs.

I like rivers and think he best of that group but to refer to all as winners is laughable since playoff wins aren't there. I'd give ryan regular season win credit and even put him as more of a winner than romo and rivers who seem destined to watch playoffs from now on.

Well, I hope on one point he's wrong because we aren't getting any "new offensive philosophy". Hopefully Joe can continue to improve despite Cam and Caldwell helps in the areas where he still needs work.

I have to give Dilfer props on this one. Instead of ranking 1 through X he has methodically put together ranking tiers.

You simply cannot compare Cam Newton to Peyton Manning because they are on different arcs of their respective careers. But you can compare Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco because of their age, and draft class/round.
