So, here's some more ammo for the "Can Cam" crowd...

By bringing in a QB coach after giving Cam those duties last season, what message is that sending??

We know what message that is sending. "Cam you wanted to coach the quarterback this year, and you sucked at it. Now we're going to see if giving you less responsibility means you will actually be good at your job."

I dont think it sends a message to cam besides cam wasnt the only quarterback coach it was craig ver steeg as well. After Jim Zorn was fired the ravens really had no choice but to get Cam and Steeg to be the quarterback coach because there really was no body else out there at the time that would be better.

Jim Caldwell is probably the best quarterback coach that was on the free agent market at the time and the ravens just couldnt pass that up besides it give Cam more time to be the offensive coodinator and craig ver seeg more time to be the offensive asisistant

Here's something else to keep in mind: Just because someone is not good at being a HC doesn't mean they aren't capable of being something else. I notice several people commenting about the fact that Caldwell couldn't coach the Colts, so why would he be any good here. Look at Jim Zorn - wasn't a good HC with the Redskins, but as a QB coach he led Hasslebeck to 3 probowls, under his tutelage Jason Campbell played better, and when he got fired Campbell fell apart. He did great for Joe last year. Another guy who we kept tossing around is Norv Turner. Philip Rivers knows how good Turner was for him personally, that's why he cajoled the Chargers FO to not fire Turner. Lots of guys who are great at one aspect of NFL coaching are not good head coaches.

Jim Caldwell as QB coach doesn't help Flacco! Baltimore Raven fans don't expect to return to the Super Bowl any time soon... This does not help Flacco therefore it does not help the Ravens (offense will still be 5 steps behind), must be frustrating.

I hope the FO isn't looking for a guy that'll stay out of Cams way. It's one thing to avoid disagreement (Cam and Zorn) as well as tension on the sidelines, but it's another to do the right thing and make the right adjustments when need be. Does anyone know if Jim has any history of making things his way instead of being a puppet?

True...look a the steelers defensive coordinator. And its easy to fail as HC cause you are still at the mercey of your staff. Unless a former coordinator can be both coordinators while being HC a lot of trust is in other people.

lol

Welllllll

It could be saying:

1. You know Cam, you really do suck at being the QB coach.

and/or

2. Cam, you really do rub Joe the wrong way.

and/or

3. Cam, this is your last chance. We're taking away any distractions. Now concentrate on updating your playbook.

*shrugs* Who knows?

so is this a fact now or just a rumor?
Various outlets are reporting that it's true and there's been no denials so far.

All that's left is to get official confirmation from the team, but otherwise, this is a done deal.

Caldwell was the QB coach in Indy from 2002-2008. During Manning's first four years in the league, without Caldwell, his QB rating was an average of 85.2; the four years after Caldwell took over, his average rating jumped to 103.3. That's not just Manning, that's also good coaching.

agreed!

i think that Caldwell would be great for Joe.

I am excited. I think Jim Caldwell, unlike Cam was set up and doomed from the beginning of the season. At any rate, I feel as if it's a second opinion from a coach that has experience with handling a high powered offense.

We'll see...

I'm not high on the hire.
I should say that I'm not low it on either. I have no idea what to expect, is all.

I've read some are not high on Hue Jackson because he threw his players under the bus and the Carson Palmer mess. No link or anything just readIng different boards and articles

Im happy someone other than Cam has a say in the offense now.....Caldwell shouldnt've been fired anyway......not his fault that Peyton's nerves in his neck wont generate anymore.....got stuck with Curtis Painter and Orlovsky (shudders) as QB's

I like it....everything I read is that he is a solid coach in the mold of Tony Dungy. He will be a great fit with Harbs and Ray Lewis and their philosophy of TEAM. I think it will be great for Joe.

This is true. Any coach would fail with those two at QB. Up to the higher ups to actually have a backup plan, because Manning isn't a God. Great pickup.

DC's are not interchangeable in baltimore. Our players are just so good it seems that way on that side of the ball but clearly there are coordinators who get more out of our players than others.

Look at a few we had

Ryan - we did great with him. 2006 was one of the best D's this franchise had.
Mattison - we set a franchise record in lowest sack total
Pagano- led the league in sacks and arguably one of the best defense we have ever had. This was pretty close to those 2000,2006 defenses especially in the beginning of the season.

I mean if we are going by the odds, our next coordinator shouldn't be that great. (not a knock on Pees or anything just goin by the numbers.)

Also Caldwell as a qb coach wouldnt affect the playcalling so much. I doubt he would have much influence over Cameron. If you wanted help offensively, Caldwell isn't horrible, but without Manning he was 2-14 and arguably the Texans gave him one win since they couldnt improve their playoff spot at that point. As offensive help, its up in the air how helpful he would be. I think he will do well as a qb coach because he did help develop Peyton, but between him and Pagano as our D coordinator, Id rather have Pagano. Pagano was unpredictable, confused defense, and as demonstrated in our NE game, had the D play in a very very disciplined fasion. We gave brady no info and didn't jump on anything. Thats tough to replace.
Without Caldwell, Peyton was just a very good QB who put up fantasy football stats. With Caldwell, he went to 2 SBs and won one.

This won't stop you from minimizing Caldwell, because its your nature.

We just got a QB coach that been there in the presence of the greatest passer ever.

Watching Peyton study, practice, and play for years. (Also helping him somewhat)

I think this could be great for Joe. Hopefully Cam doesnt interfer with anything between them though.

lol this team loves hiring coaches who get fired after 1-15 season pretty smart

We've gone deep in the playoffs fours years in a row, so it works for us.

Honestly, Ill take Caldwell over Hue for QB coach. I wouldve loved Hue as a play caller, but I think Caldwell is going to be a great QB coach. As the stats show, Peyton improved under Caldwell's coaching, and Caldwell likely improved as a coach working with someone as brilliant as Peyton. I really hope that Caldwell can take Joe to the next level.
