A Possibility...The End Of Used Games

57 posts in this topic

So will this only apply to large systems? I cant imagine that they could do anything like this for handheld systems. DS memory systems are not strong enough to handle having to download every game online to play it. They need cartridges to hold data. PSP could use memory cards to store downloaded games, but to store the entire content of a game would take a lot of space, and no gamers are gonna want to spend a hundred dollars every month on a new memory card so they can get a new game. I remember a beautiful time when every game, regardless of system was $30.

Hasn't this already happened to a degree? Some games make you enter "online passes" that come with the game and, if you don't have it (say, from a used game), you have to buy a new one for like $20.
Yes and no. Online passes only apply to online multiplayer features. The biggest difference is that online passes don't render used copies completely useless, especially since there are a few instances of getting a copy of a used game cheap enough that buying it alongside a downloadable online pass is cheaper than buying a new copy with the online pass already included.

Will this then also mean the end of selling back games? Cause I cant imagine Gamestop buying back games if they cant sell them.
If the new consoles indeed render used game copies useless, then it would mean the end of trading in games and Gamestop selling them too.

Could they not at least for a while continue buying and selling used games for consoles that dont have that limitation? People still buy old games and use older systems....

Potentially but after new consoles come out, Gamestop barely gives you anything for older games on older systems anyway and after awhile they stop accepting them.

Yeah I found out a while ago that they no longer sell GBA games. Ticked me off. GBA had some of the best games out for portable.

I know right? I do find older gems however that I may buy to play. I keep all my older systems just in case one of those situations happen for me. =)

Same here. In the mall in Nashville there is a small game store that specializes in older systems and games. Found some stuff for my Gensis lol.

They may not give you much for it but, if it's in decent condition, they're fairly valuable on the interwebs. People are willing to pay for "retro" systems and games.

If this were to happen, it would make Netflix's business mistakes seem like a fart in a tornado.

What did they do? Do you mean separating the cost of the streaming vids and movies?

This news is the worst but I really could see this backfiring on the greedy companies to be honest. I would definitely stick with the games I have already and not bother with the expensive new systems that are going to limit me anyway.

They are stupid. Isn't it funny that normally greed is caused by the making of more money but yet the greed of getting rid of used games will lose them money in the long run. I don't buy many games each year, I even skipped out on Madden 13. Yet, I like going to Gamestop and being able to look at older games and play them. I also loved renting games at Blockbuster when I was a kid to try the game out first before telling my parents to get me the game for my birthday or Christmas.

It's too bad Sony or Microsoft isn't smart enough to come up with an idea to allow us to "rent" the game at a price for say 10 days to play the game first before trying it.

Still not sold on the Ouya. While the idea of open game creation sounds great, it'll take a lot more than that to get me on that hype train. It's essentially just playing android games but with a controller. Not particularly enticing from that standpoint.Seems more like a niche thing more than something to take seriously.

Even though I'm just one person, I do know that if Sony and Microsoft do indeed go this route, I wouldn't be surprised to see gamers indeed migrate to other platforms including the Ouya. The Steambox is also looking like a more enticing product. The ability to get Steam deals through a console? Sign me up for that. That's one thing PC gaming has always had over consoles.

I haven't really heard of this.. ever.. until now, thanks Baltimore Fans! Haha I knew I loved you all for a reason! ;)
Closest thing that I've seen like that is when I played Diablo and Starcraft with their CD-Codes to play... Reading this, that's just ridiculous! I don't buy used games really but I'll buy a new game if it looks really good, because if I truly think I'll like it (Like Dishonored, Skyrim and Borderlands 2 recently...) I'll buy it $60 because it's worth it(for me at least) ... but to think I'd have to possibly by it over and over again is disgusting

So, if you get a PS4 and it dies, after getting a replacement, your current games will be useless?
Never had a Playstation, hope this BS isn't going to be on the new xbox (although it probably will).
Guess I'll be sticking with my 360 for a long time.....

The first part, yes. Same with the xbox.

And i'll probably be sticking with my 360 anyway. I'm sure there will be problems with the PS4, and the new xbox, like there always is in the beginning.

It's just a patent so it may not even be implemented in the next console but you can't help but wonder is this really going to happen since these rumors have been following their next-gen consoles for awhile now. They'd be signing their own ticket out of the console race if they ever did do this to their fans.

Consoles need to ditch the optical drives and just go with Digital distribution like PC is doing with Steam, Origin, etc.

Lots of benefits with this.

1. The biggest failure part in the Xbox AND PS3 would now be eliminated (Opitcal drive) With the Xbox 360, you have the option to install the entire game to the HDD, then your disc drive doesn't have to spin for hours upon hours.Im willing to bet 95% of people never use this option. The spindle motor is very fickle because the DVD's must spin at a higher RPM than Blu Ray, while the PS3 drive is prone do laser malfunctions.

2. With Digital Distribution, you don't have to go to a store to buy a game on release date. You just press a button. Most of the time with big releases on Digital you are given the option to "Pre Load" a game before its release date. So when midnight hits and the games release date arrives, the game files unlock and all you have to do is press play, your downloading was done days ago! For some reason you still cant download a game on console the day it comes out in stores.

3. Never have to worry about a disc getting scratches or being broke. Digital is there all the time to re download as many times as you want.

there is a few cons for those people who don't have internet or have a bandwidth cap. I just think digital is just so easy. The success that Steam has had over the last 10 years is undeniable.

Economically I have to agree. Used games cause a huge inefficiency in the gaming market. With that said, imagine how artists feel when they release songs and albums just to have people download it in seconds off frostwire. Same with movies and TV shows. Those guys don't get any commission from you streaming their show on Netflix. TV stations miss out on it too when you watch shows on Netflix and not on TV.

However, restricting the usage entirely is not smart. Many artists wouldn't be as popular if people couldn't listen to and download their music for free. Nobody wants to drop 10-25 bucks to listen to 2 good songs and a bunch of OK ones by an artist. Same with used games. Some games aren't worth the 60 dollar price tag and they aren't priced based on quality.
Many people won't have the ability to discover games. I'd be fine if they had a few month period where you can only access the game with a new copy, but they can't make it permanent. I have to agree that releasing a game only to have people buying it for 20 dollars less on Ebay a few days later, and not receiving any of the profit, is a bid ridiculous.

True but I don't think the console industry is ready for the all digital age yet. I do believe this is the last generation where game discs will be relevant because by the next generation streaming will be even more dominant than it is today (if that's even possible).

As much as it does make sense economically, a customer's consumer loyalty is far more valuable than trying to get every nickle and dime from your consumer. The used games market is huge without a doubt but the backlash that would happen would be devastating to Sony or any company who would implement this technique. A sample of that backlash can be exemplified by the negative feedback that was received when the Sony patent news broke out.
