Two Key Players For Next Year

27 posts in this topic

1.) Joe Flacco. Now, I defend Flacco a lot, but I'm calling him out here a bit. He needs to flat out play better next year, even if Cam is back, and even if his offensive line struggles. Flacco needs to grow a pair and just change the play when it's bad, change his protection when his line is struggling, and lead this team when they're down. He is a franchise quarterback, and he needs to stop letting other people be excuses for when he has a bad game. He needs to rather overcome the things holding him back and fix them. He's a grown man being paid to play football, this shouldn't be too much to ask for. If this happens, idc who our OC is. Flacco has all the natural talents, he just needs to go out and execute. I'm not blaming him for the problem, but he needs to be the solution. He led multiple GWDs, and other weeks couldn't pick up first downs, and threw an almost maddening amount of picks that were thrown right to linebackers in the middle of the field. I expect Flacco's leadership in changing plays, protection, and teaching young players to lead to a much more potent offense next year.

2.) Webb. This guy will be key. We all remember being scorched by San Diego, because our corners couldn't cover. He wasn't playing that game, and it hurt us big time. He's going to be huge for us because he's going to become a shut down corner next year. Yeah, Bold statement, but I believe it to be true. Look at it this way: He almost was this year, he was only really beat on double moves and when there was no pass rush. An offseason where he is free to study with Reed and with coaches, which he didn't have last year, will complete his transformation. He does a good job jumping routes, and knowing where the ball is and when to strike. He's the most underrated corner in the NFL, and next year will be even more so a breakout year than this one. With that, whoever our DC is will be able to let Web control one half of the field almost, and give Reed the other. Out blitz packages will be free to become more exotic, and with the depth we have with Smith and Williams, our defense will continue to be dominant.

These two guys will be key in both sides of the ball being more successful and bringing a trophy back to Baltimore.

Side note, our Special Teams just needs everything, besides a punter. A returner who isn't a starter, guys who can tackle, a kicker perhaps, and maybe even a coach. But if the offense and defense get better, they'll hopefully pick up any slack.

This is sort of a pet peeve, but technically from our vantage point its impossible to know if Joe audibles or not. If Joe audibles he could either be changing the play, or just killing the play back to what it was originally. We couldn't know.

If it's really so bad that he isn't allowed, he should do it anyway, or call his own play from the huddle...what's the coaching staff gonna do? Put in Tyrod? Granted, Joe has to be successful doing this, otherwise it could get messy. But Flacco needs to be the solution to the bad play-calling, he is the quarterback and the best person to address it (or at least best player.)

I agree with everything you've said OP.

Especially about returner (and not to mention Kicker ). We haven't had an explosive guy since Jermaine Lewis.

This is why I believe Cam has to go, because Flacco can't kill a bad play currently because the team usually doesn't get out of the huddle with the play call until there is 10-15 seconds left, when everyone lines up another 5 seconds may have passed if anyone goes in motion then before you know it's a snap at 3 seconds or one of those annoying Time-Outs do to poor clock management. And it's 100% Cam because there are so many times that u can see the disgust in Flacco, Rice, Boldin's Faces.....

If this team could get in and out of huddle 15-20 seconds on play clock maybe Flacco could line up read if the coverage is man r zone by putting someone in motion, the o-line could point out protections , etc.

I believe Flacco needs a new scenery with a offensive coordinate that is not stubborn and pale in play calling. Ravens better hurry up and grab a OC that can open up our offense. If our offense can match our consistent defense, we can dominate our schedule next year. Yeah, Flacco holds on the ball too long and makes bad decision, but he might excel in a short passing offense like the WCO. Cam's offense requires too much time since it emphasize on speed, which makes Flacco a sitting duck, if the O-line fails.

You're missing my point.

I'm telling you unless you know the play before the audible you don't know if he's changing it. He could be going to the kill play or he could be just audibling and still running the same play.

Flacco-Offense needs to step up and it starts at QB. We can only go as far as this offense will allow.
SAM Backer-Need a player who can contribute with run support yet effectively and consistently rush the passer.

And I'm saying he should just call his own play if that's the common issue. And he should address this problem and demand a change in the system if Cam is staying. I don't want another year if excuses for Flacco. If they don't take the training wheels off him he should take them off by force. No reason for Flacco putting up with bad and late playcalls and being inhibited from audibling by either design or happenstance.

Going into his 5th season with Training wheels on is embarassing and if he wants to be considered elite one day, he will stand up and go to Ozzie or Harbs and say what he wants control or a new coordinator.

I agree. Whole heartedly. Stop letting circumstances control your play. He needs to make sure he gas any excuse for poor offensive play addressed before week 1.

That would be like going to one of your bosses and telling him your manager should be fired. Its really not Joe's place. Not high enough on the totem pole. Ozzie needs to do it, or Harbs, or Bisciotti, heck, even Dick Cass. Something should be said, but its not Joe's place.

You guys are kidding yourselfs if you still don't believe our franchise QB audibles. This was his 4th year, he audibles. He doesn't do it as "viciously" as other QB's, such as Manning is famous for.. but he DOES audible with words and such, he can kill plays, or change plays. Those two very bad called passes at the end of the Texans playoff game that everyone was mad at, THAT WAS JOES AUDIBLE!!!!

He saw 2 run blitzes, and decided it was smarter to throw then run straight into a wall of man.

BUT I agree no one can give Flacco excuses next year, especially the "Cam wont let joe audible!" excuse....

Two key players for next year?

1. Whoever starts at center.
2. Whoever starts a left/right tackle

We need our line to step up more than anything.

Webb was a shutdown corner this year. If my memory serves me right, and it sometimes doesn't, Webb didn't have a single touchdown against him this year. And according to simple stats, i recall seeing him finish 4th overall NFC/AFC as a CB. So in my opinion he is already a shutdown corner! I am however very very very excited to see the competition between C. Williams and J. Smith. We're gonna have an outstanding secondary.

If your worried about coverage, worry about our 3-4 scheme without a "excellent pass defending" set of LB's.

@atlravensfan....I like it, but I will go:

1. Joe Flacco
2. Marques Colston
Those combos would score more points, which equals more passing downs for opposing teams. With suggs and the other pass rushers coming along they ravens could not only lead the league in sacks but blow the league leaders away.
