[Blogs] Colts Hire Pagano As Head Coach

The Ravens are in need of a new defensive coordinator.

The Indianapolis Colts announced Wednesday that they hired Ravens Defensive Coordinator Chuck Pagano.

“It’s difficult to leave the Ravens but I couldn’t pass up on this great opportunity,” Pagano said. “I’m just thrilled and so excited.”

In his first and only season as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, Pagano’s unit ranked third in the NFL in points allowed and average yards per game.

He is beloved by his former players.

“Chuck Pagano, if anybody is trying to hire a head coach, if they ask, I’m going to say he sucks,” outside linebacker Terrell Suggs said jokingly after Baltimore Dec. 12 game against Indianapolis.

“He’s terrible. He’s a terrible coach. His players don’t love him, and he doesn’t know what he’s doing when he’s calling a game.”

Pagano, 51, had been Baltimore’s secondary coach during the previous three seasons. It would be his first head-coaching job of his career.

It was reported that Pagano had an interview with the Colts, who fired Jim Caldwell after a 2-14 season, on Tuesday.

Two in-house candidates mentioned by pundits could be Linebackers Coach Dean Pees or Defensive Line Coach Clarence Brooks. Pees joined Baltimore’s staff in 2010 after previously being the defensive coordinator in New England. Brooks has been with Baltimore since 2005.

Pagano is the fourth Ravens defensive coordinator to take a head coaching job elsewhere, joining Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati), Mike Nolan (San Francisco), Rex Ryan (New York Jets).

Congratulations to Chuck Pagano, but man are we going to miss him. He brought Ravens defense back to form after the Greg Mattison era.

every year the ravens lose a d.c. to another team. every year ravens have a strong defense. can't someone take cam? oh that's right, he sucks. cam is a dope for going on it on 4th & 6. with 7 min to go. cam lost that game not the players. hey cam....maybe maimi might hire you again.

Mattison wasn't better than Chuck or Rex for that matter, but we were still top 5 in Defense. Just Saying. Once Ray and Ed retire, then we should worry

Pagano is a dang traitor. You know what?? You take that 2-14 team. We don't need you. If you want to look like Mike Nolan, Marvin Lewis, and *gasp* Rex Ryan, go right ahead and do so. Just know this; thats not a defensive minded team. It'll take you years to get your team to where you want them. Whereas you already inherited beast D players, but just came up with a scheme that suited them, you don't have that in Indy outside of aging Brackett/Freeney/Mathis. We'll see how this sucker does, but I don't think he'll fare that well. You'll come crying back for the D Coord spot again when you see that you aren't all powerful. Until then, bad luck.

Some Ravens fans might not like to hear this but this defense, let alone this team, is so much more than Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
