Something Sizzle Pointed Out

30 posts in this topic

On first take he was mentioning how fast pace the game was going & mentioned the Boldin catch & fumble.. pretty much hinting that we should have had a fresh set of downs. I remember thinking that when it first happened but when the other mind blowing plays happened I completely forgot about it. I know, I know... none of it really matters because we still lost. But does anyone else think he had the first down... especially after the fumble??

In the Texans game they went & reviewed our spotting because it was so close and took away our first down. Why were these things not done for us? The spotting & the non TD catch? They pretty much said this is how it is & they didn't need to look at it closely. I find that pretty ridiculous.

Yea, honestly i forgot all about that play as well. But when that play happened i remeber it going something like this:
Friends:"OoOo fumble!!"
*Ball bounces out of bounds*
Me:"it's ok it's ok, thats about 5 extra yards, first down"

But somehow those yards didn't count, that play confused me. I still don't know what the official rule was on that play, i think the referees got caught up in the game as well, they weren't as sharp down the stretch.

Yes, just another part of the surrealistic sequence of events. Boldin had the first down before he even fumbled, I don't know why he didn't get it. And it's so stupid that you can't challenge within 2 minutes, it makes no sense and the refs are totally incompetent. Just another embarrassment for the NFL to ignore.

I thought when u fumble the ball the ball keep moving the line of scrimmage foward if it goes out of bounds that is where the ball is placed, Boldin should have had that first down

the refs messed up ..i think Boldin had that first down regardless

I believe the rule is the ball cannot be advanced on a fumble out of bounds. The ball is placed at the "spot" of the fumble.

Unless it's fumbled and goes through the opposing team's endzone and out of bounds. Then it is considered a touchback.

No, they followed the rules right. A fumble that goes forward and out of bounds returns to the fumbling team at the spot of the fumble.

Think about it this way .. if not for that rule, a runner could "fumble" the ball forward on purpose for 20 yards and out of bounds for a huge gain.

the announcers mentioned something about being inside 2 minutes a team can not fumble the ball to advance it.
so basically once its out of bounds it goes back to where it was fumbled.
think of it as making sure you cant "accidentally" fumble a ball forward by throwing or kicking it to gain yardage

I still believe he had the first down regardless & they didn't even look at it. I just think those things should have been looked at more closely. A fresh set of downs is a big deal.

Was the fumble within the last 2 min? There's a rule that a fumble can't be advanced within the final 2 minutes (I believe) as a way to keep the offense from using gamesmanship to advance the ball

The inside two-minute rule is the one that I find bizarre. Here it is verbatim, 'cause if I try to ad lib it'll be even more screwed up:

"If any player fumbles after the two-minute warning in a half, only the fumbling player is permitted to recover and/or advance the ball. If recovered by any other offensive player, the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble unless it is recovered behind the spot of the fumble. In that case, the ball is dead at the spot of recovery. Any defensive player may recover and/or advance any fumble at any time."

Same rule as a 4'th down fumble. The ball can only be advanced by the player who fumbled the ball.

i think there are so many rules that need fixing or doing away with that the league's head starts spinning and they get side tracked and all of a sudden we have new kick offs and new OT rules...

fix some of the broken rules before u go creating new ones or whatever

I think that was what Sizzle was hinting at too. The non TD catch could not have been looked at THAT closely in the moment of everything... we went to our 3rd down play right away. It might have ended up being the right call but they lucked out on that one because they didn't give either of those plays the amount of time it deserved.

and in critical last minute game situations, thats what the REPLAY booth is for and its taken out of the coaches HANDS so the LEAGUE HAS TO MAKE THOSE CALLS

Yup... this loss is really going to sting for a long long time because so many things didn't go our way in those final seconds. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Gut it. Gut it all. Just take the entire book of league rules and chuck it out the window and start from scratch. Start with "common sense" basics. Lets get rid of these rules that protect "glass" quarterbacks. Lets get rid of the tuck rule. Lets get rid of this "the ball broke the plane of the endzone" nonsense; why can't a player just get his whole body in the endzone with the ball, like the good ol' days?

Furthermore... move the kickoff spot back to where it was and put the uprights on the goal line (old school!), not at the back of the endzone!

Yeah... gut it!

I like how a WR can drag the CB into the endzone by the facemask (ala; Torrey Smith), yet the CB puts a hand anywhere near the WR.. it's a penalty.

..It was kinda funny watching Smith drag him in though.

There has definitely been rules put in place to favor offense over defense, that's what the league, the owners, everyone wanted because it helps the sport when its high scoring

$$$$

its really an unfair competitive imbalance

I was a track runner in from 6th grade up until 10th grade; then my junior year I was approached by the football coach Mr. Parks who didn't hold any punches when he told me, "You're never going to be standout, you've had the unfortunate luck of being born the same time as Joey Anderson. Why don't you tryout for the football team, we could get you on the roster as a third WR."

I wasn't short, but I wasn't six-foot either, but I had a lot of speed and I was a good burner. Got my head knocked around quite a bit in those days. Had plenty of people grab my facemask and torque my neck, had a few horsecollar tackles. I even had this one idiot from Waldron INTENTIONALLY trip and shove me.

Point I'm making is, not once in any of those incidents did I look for a flag to be thrown my way because I knew the risks of playing the game before I stepped onto the field. And I find it very sad and pathetic that I have to say, that I had more fortitude than a lot of the players you see in the NFL who cry when a breeze touches their skin.

I understand I wasn't playing at a professional level with grown men who do nothing but workout and train day-in and day-out as part of their job to, in essence, hurt people. But as an offensive or defensive player you have to just suck it up and realize, as Ray Lewis would say...

It's a man's game! (see Mili's signature)
