Candidates For Offensive Coordinator

255 posts in this topic

Rejoice Ravens fans, for the Cam Cameron era of offense is finally coming to an end. The days of run-run-pass, forcing Flacco to bail the team out in third and long situations, and the generally inexplicable play-calling are (hopefully) no more. I’d like to take this time to examine some of the possible upgrades that could be coming to Baltimore next season. Based on the candidate pool, it’s safe to assume that the Ravens will be transitioning to some form of the West Coast Offense, which in and of itself is a step in the right direction. I think the Coryell is fundamentally flawed in today’s league, with its reliance on lower percentage throws, and would like to see a complete philosophy shift on offense.

Anyway, here are the top candidates for Offensive Coordinator:

Hue Jackson

Hue Jackson is my favorite candidate for the job, and he’s the most logical fit. Flacco and Jackson had a good rapport during his time in Baltimore, by all accounts, which is going to be very important going forward. That alone will be an immediate and noticeable change from the Cam Cameron era, considering how poor the relationship between him and Flacco is perceived to be. Jackson, from what I have found, runs a West Coast Offense, like many people on the boards want the Ravens to shift to. As the Raiders OC last season, he helped that team with a complete lack of talent become one of the top 10 offenses in the league. While he went a bit crazy with power this season in Oakland, he still took a team with barely any talent to an 8-8 record. I think he could do a great job with all the weapons Baltimore has.

Todd Haley

I don’t like Todd Haley as a person, but just thinking about getting any part of that awesome Cardinal offense on this team has me a bit intrigued. Haley has proved he knows how to utilize the weapons he has available, helping craft one of the most enjoyable passing attacks to watch in Arizona and a solid run-based offense in KC. Perhaps in the OC position again he would be able to help this offense grow. Like Hue, I don’t think he handled the power of being a HC very well. I believe he runs a WCO as well.

Jim Zorn

The biggest plus for Jim Zorn is the fact that Joe Flacco had the best season of his career with Zorn as the QB coach. We all know Flacco was upset when Zorn was fired, and that speaks the good relationship that those two had. I don’t believe he has experience being an OC, mostly making his name as a QB coach, but a talentless Redskins team did have a halfway decent offense for one of his years as the head coach. Zorn runs the WCO.

Mike Sherman

The former head coach of the Green Bay Packers had a fair amount of success during his time in the league before putting in a rather forgettable stint as the coach of Texas A&M. Still, Brett Favre put up some pretty impressive numbers under Sherman back in the day when it wasn't the norm. This option is a bit riskier because he's been coaching college players for a while, but maybe this is just the type of opportunity he needs. At this point anyone is better than Cam, right?

Brad Childress

Childress doesn’t have a lot of experience in play calling, as he didn’t do it under Andy Reid, but he did help run a very good offense for many years on the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff. His claim to fame is helping McNabb reach five Pro Bowls, and helping Brett Favre have the best season of his career under Childress. Coming from Philly, it’s well known that Childress runs the WCO. This option is the one that scared me the most, but I suppose he comes with similar risk to Haley.

Tom Clements

Clements played a large part in the development of Aaron Rodgers as the Green Bay QB coach, and I’d like to think he would be able to do the same for Joe Flacco. I’m not sure he would leave the Packers, as he’ll probably get a promotion with the departure of Joe Philbin, but he is someone worth keeping in mind. Clements runs the WCO.

Oakland had great talent. They just got bogged down by injuries. What is impressive, though, is how Carson Palmer played decently well despite boycotting half a season. I don't know who to credit for that.

Palmer threw way to many INTs, and that kept them out of the playoffs. Outside of McFadden that team really is garbage. They have a ton of speed and are the best track team in the NFL, but in terms of football players the Raiders are lacking.

I nominate anyone but Cam Cameron. But seriously I'm not a fan of either Haley or Childress. I think both were aided greatly by the fact that they had great quarterbacks - Warner and McNabb - and great receivers - Fitz, Boldin, Breston, Doucet, TO, Celek, Thrash, Westbrook, to work with. But if it were a choice between Cam and a ham sandwich, I'll take the ham sandwich.

Yep, it's sad when your fourth round receiver (the guy out of Florida) is better than your 7th overall pick DHB.

I defended Cam Cameron for a long time ... But he is GONE. I hate his offensive scheme. It is the most predictable in all Pro Football ... Its not the 60s and your not Air Coryel !!! I know there is an OC who knows he could tear it up with the offensive pieces we have. We need a new age OC with creative plays who knows how to make good with his weapons!!

Clements is probably in line for GB's OC job. Hes not coming here.

I think Mike Sherman would be an excellent fit here.

I thought Sherman was interviewing for HC gigs? I heard Tampa Bay.

Promote from within? Worked with Pagano :)

Honestly, I would love for us to throw an offer at Oregon HC Chip Kelly. I doubt he takes the offer but he is a master of offense.

Other than that. I would take Hue Jackson or someone that can run a mean WCO

If Hue could come here, know his role and play within it then he'd be my first choice.

I do believe the Ravens have offered Cam an extension for next year already. I hope they can recinde that offer. I also believe that Joe NEEDS a QB coach.

What about the Saints OC? I think Carmichael? He'll be interviewed for the Indy HC job but if he doesn't get it, perhaps he'd come to B'more.

Really the only guy we may have from within is Wilbert Montgomery, the running back coach. I certainly don't trust the receivers coach and the o-line guy.

Is "Ask Madden" an option?
A better one than "ask Cam Cameron".

It's the opposite. They offered no extension.

i could really see Hue taking the helm as our O.C. and really doing some great things with Flacco and our HBs/WRs/TEs talent.

He is. But he hasn't been hired yet.

If he doesn't get hired as HC, he'll come in as OC.

1 question, How can any of you 100%, positively with total and complete confidence say that Cam will be gone. Stop assuming until anything is confirmed.

Wouldn't be opposed to that. He's coached quite a few pro bowl RBs so he knows something about offense. Only concern is he's a little older, and may be a little old fashioned, and not as creative. Who knows though? He might be an offensive genius.

Numerous reports have stated that he will be gone, and I can't imagine we will retain him.

Compared to Cam Cameron anyone is an offensive genius.

There have been quite a few threads with these links and sources included. I'm too lazy to provide them though. But they are there! I can assure you.

This may sound crazy but Bruce Arians isnt coming back in pittsburgh. Thoughts?
No. He's retiring i heard (some say forced retirement) and check out the Steelers boards for their opinions on the guy. No better than ours are about Cam.

Here. They'd be settling for mediocrity if they resigned Cam.

Yeah I said that about Clements but he's worth considering if they don't promote him.

I forgot about Mike Sherman, I'll edit him into the list later.

As to people saying Cam might not be gone, Bisciotti wanted him gone last season and only kept him around because of the lockout. There's no way he lives to coach another day in Baltimore.

He helped lead to this loss. If he comes back I don't know what to say about Ozzie Newsome and the front office.
