Offensive Worship

4 posts in this topic

This particular complaint about the league/media/fans in general is the worship of offenses just for the fact that they score points.

When you hear about a good offense, you hear arguments that are extremely exaggerated. "We KNOW they're gonna put points on the board." "Are they unstoppable?".

But defense is an afterthought. Sometimes not even a thought. It's a footnote, rather than half of a team.

Last year the league was all over the Patriots' offense asking "How can you stop them?" Not "are they really good", but "how do you stop them?". Then the Jets crushed Tom Brady's offense. This year we spent the season listening to "Is the Packers' offense unstoppable? Is the Saints' offens unstoppable?" Once those teams were eliminated, the offense worshippers moved their sights to the next best offense and asked if they were unstoppable. That team is the Ravens' opponent this Sunday, and even with all the evidence, we still have to answer the question yet again that no, no offense is unstoppable. Defense wins championships.

In all the years in the league, the QB that threw for the most yards in the league did not win the Super Bowl.

Here are the last 10:
Packers: 5th ranked defense.
Saints: #1 in turnovers
Steelers: 1st ranked defense.
Giants: 7th ranked defense.
Colts: 21st ranked defense.
Steelers: 4th ranked defense.
Patriots: 9th ranked defense.
Patriots: 7th ranked defense.
Buccaneers: 1st ranked defense.
Patriots: 24th ranked defense.

By the way, that 2001 Patriots defense? 6th in interceptions and 3rd in opponent QB rating.

If the Patriots fall next week, all will be forgotten and the next best offense be worshipped and favored in the Super Bowl despite all evidence to the contrary.

I think it would take a SF or Baltimore SB victory, to maybe get defense some love again.

But if the Pats win the SB, the offensive love will only increase next year.

That is the second reason I'm rooting for a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl. First reason, I want to see the Super Harbaugh Bowl like everyone else, second and most important reason, both of these teams are not offensive minded teams. These teams live by defense, they live by playing great defense every play. I know it wouldn't happen but I would love to see a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl that is played on great defense and is a low scoring game and Defense begins to rise it's way back to where it was before, where it ruled the NFL.

That Colts D got HOT when it needed to. Going into the playoffs, everyone was sure that Larry Johnson (a bum, nowadays) and the Chiefs were going to run all over them but the Colts shut them down. Their defense was more important to that Super Bowl run than Manning was, yeah, I said it.
