Bookies Rooting Against Ravens

20 posts in this topic

Thought this was an interesting article about the AFC matchup from the bookies POV:

The Super Bowl handle will be monumental, as usual.

But books are pulling hard for New England to beat Baltimore.

“All the teams left would create a major handle except for the Ravens,” Fuhrman said. “You’ve got major media markets with the Giants and Patriots, and their Super Bowl in 2008 was tremendous. Our proximity to California would make San Francisco an attractive choice as well.”

Added Andrews: “We really want New England. It’s not the market so much as it is the Ravens’ playing style. They’re low scoring, they win mostly on defense. It’s not an attractive team to the casual fan.”

This doesn't bother me whatsoever. Yet, could the Ravens "not being an attractive team to the casual fan" answer the "no media love" question?

Wait, so if that kind of football isn't attractive to the casual fan, then why is Baltimore vs Pittsburgh so popular?

Found a couple of interesting trends in the Ravens favor...

Teams that score 40-plus in the playoffs are 3-19 ATS the following week since 1996 (Saints lost this weekend after scoring 40+ on Detroit the previous week)

Teams coming off wins of 20+ at home in the playoffs are 4-9 ATS the following week since 2002.

Also the line went down from 7.5 to 7...

Too much public money on the Pats and the Sharps are betting the spread down. The public hype is making this game seem too lopesided when it really isnt...

Probably is, since Walt has gotten every spread/game right bar one (Broncos @ Pats).

I don't bet, but I find the trends etc. pretty insteresting.

Hm... that sounds more like what the NFL wants. Goodell would want nothing more than 2 passing teams and not teams like the Ravens or 49ers who are apparently according to this, "not an attractive team." Even the Bookers are brainwashed by Roger Goodell and the whole idea that a passing league is the best. I bet the bookers weren't happy when Green Bay and New Orleans got taken out and they probably lost a bunch of money because of that, and come 6PM Sunday, they will lose even more money as the Ravens head to Indianapolis.

They probably made money off of The Packers and Saints losses. The public LOVE betting offensive, high-scoring teams.

I have the worst luck with betting/winning stuff. So last week I put a healthy happiness hedge bet on the Texans to win straight up. Lost that money, was very happy about it. I wanted to put another bet on the Patriots this week, but the betting lines are just unfair.

Let's say you risk $100 on the Patriots straight up, you only win $30. Even if I placed a happiness hedge and the Patriots won, I still wouldn't feel happy one bit! Damn those Pats!

The Public? Who decides that they can speak for over a million football fans? That's like when certain fans act up and then everyone tries to say that every fan is like that and categorizes every fan and thinks that because of how that one fan acted, the entire fan base acts like that. That is the same here, just because a group of people like the high passing, high scoring games doesn't mean that EVERYONE likes those types of games. Ravens fan or not, I enjoy the low scoring defensive type of games. I prefer a team who runs the ball 25-30 times a game, manages the clock and play good defensive football. Again that is just ME, I'm not going to sit here and say that just because I like that type of game, all Ravens fans like that, no because some Ravens fans on this board may like the high scoring passing league, I don't know. I just know that everyone doesn't like the passing league and high scoring games, so to group those people in with the ones who do is wrong and makes the statement so incorrect.

LOL at being an unattractive team to the casual fan, well apparently people would prefer two teams with similar styles playing in the Super Bowl over the Patriots and Giants. NFL Countdown on their FB page had a poll asking what SB match up fans want to see more and almost 2,000 votes are for Ravens vs 49ers, while 1,281 votes are for Patriots vs Giants.

You have to keep in mind most of the people who vote are fans of teams not in the playoffs. A lot of those fanbases hate the Patriots and the ones who don't care would just find a Harbaugh vs Harbaugh more interesting.

I'm sure they are also rooting against the Ravens because some idiots in Vegas pegged the Ravens as a 7.5 point dog. I can almost guarantee the smart bettors are gonna put a ton of money on the Ravens while the public loves the Pats.

I'm really annoyed with the NFL right now, and especially the rule changes to try and make offenses unstoppable. I hate that our country does this to sports. To my knowledge commissioners haven't destroyed soccer to create higher scoring games, or rugby for that matter. But the NFL and the NBA have blasted their rule books to try and earn more money, completely taking away what made our sports so great to begin with... The Ravens are one of the few teams that are successful at playing football, old-school football. All this foolishness regarding not putting up a lot of points and not being an attractive team drives me nuts... (I had to rant)
