Officiating...

Granted I did not watch ALL of ALL games but I watched a LOT.

It seems to me that the officiating has been pretty awesome this whole weekend in that they are letting them play football !!

Seeing things that otherwise would be called (either side ) are being over looked. I kinda like it like this.
It suits us well heading to foxboro next week. Princess brady is not going to get a lot of yellow hankerchiefs to wipe her tears with

Am I alone in this observation ?

It all depends on the crew and their mood. One game nothing, next game a yellow parade.

The officiating was good overall with the exception of the Packers/Giants game. First, they completely failed to make a proper call on a game changing fumble even with a review. Then, after apparently deciding to "let the players play" when Eli got hit well after his throws on several occasions, they ended up flagging the Giants on a perfectly legal and on-time hit on Rodgers to keep GB's slim hopes alive. It was atrocious.

From NBC Sports PFT:

League will consider hiring some full-time officials next season

Posted by Mike Florio on January 15, 2012, 3:20 PM EST

The NFL traditionally has resisted calls to make officials full-time, year-round employees. As the NFL continues to grow in audience and interest and significance, the league seems to be warming to the importance of creating the impression that all reasonable steps are being taken to ensure that the officials get it right.

Did you see the officiating in Green Bay v Giants? That was bad, and awfully one-sided for the Packers.

Two plays costed the Giants two touchdowns. One was a fumble by Greg, even on the challenge they called it not a fumble.
Another was a penalty as personal foul for hitting the head of Aaron Rodgers, when he only hit his shoulder CLEARLY.

Both of those drives ended in touchdowns for the Packers, making what should've been a blowout 37-6 game, to a manageable 37-20.

I think most of the calls were fair with the exception of the Giants/Packers game. Had the Packers of won it would of been due to the refs extending two packer drives for touchdowns.

With the exception of that Giants @ Packers game, I liked what I saw from most officiating crews during the Wildcard and Divisional weekends..

But mind you, for Tom Bieber to get these ridiculous roughing the passer calls, we'd actually need to get some pressure on him..

I've been REALLY unimpressed with the post-season officiating.

The inconsistencies have been ridiculous on multiple occasions and for the love of god would officials start flagging for obvious holds.

For the most part, they seem to be letting them play; but some of the calls only seem to be benefiting one team. Not trying to give the Texans fans something to gnaw on because there were a lot of PI calls that didn't get made in our favor, but Ravens commited zero penalties. That speaks volumes! The Ravens have cut back on penalties all season, to have them peak is amazing. But, to some degree it almost seems odd.

Honestly, the officiating isn't what I was concerned with today. It was player safety, and for the most part, our boys were unscathed. I know he said he's OK, but I hope Reed is 100% come Foxborough.

I'm completely with you on that one! I've given up on holds really.. To me, it's just an extra bonus if an official bothers to call one during a game lol

I think they are being pretty leinent in their flagging , drew brees threw almost 70 times and I know his oline was mugging people and not one holding penalty was called

Seems like offensive linemen, fullbacks and tight ends just hold, since the extra yardage they make while holding won't be anywhere near cancelled out by the 1 or 2 holding calls the officials will bother calling.

Today the Ravens didnt commit a single penalty. Something tells me next week we will see a couple of phantom "roughing the QB" penalties...

would you believe that Ttom Brady actually isn't the top recipient of Roughing the Passer calls? Big Jen is.
I believe it.

I'm glad actually that they were reffing this way. We've had two weeks of some of the most enjoyable playoff football in years!

I have a theory, and it's based on no statistical evidence... but to be an official, you have to be a massive fan of the game (that's not the theory, that's a no brainer). There are probably a billion times you just WANT to swallow your whistle, and when given the chance, you do. Not things like false starts or whatever, which are just too easy, but some of those "helmet to helmet" BS calls that are incidental, for example. Or allowing the defender a little more contact as long as it's not blatantly mugging the receiver. My theory, though, is that the league probably makes some pretty stern calls to their employees about "what they expect to see" prior to certain weeks, etc. And it wouldn't surprise me if there were personal instructions when certain players played.

Cuz, I mean, seriously... what REAL fan of the game enjoys having it slowed down and decided by ticky-tack calls?

It's awesome on most drives, that whistles are being muffled until you see a PI not being called on third down lol Guess it's good for the game, but it can come back and bite us. I know it was good that we got away with the Boldin catch where he didn't get his other foot down lol

I think refs are terrible this post season. Yes they are letting them play but shouldn't they call the same (way) penalties in the regular season and into the post season. All players ask for is to be consistent, call the same way from game one to the last.
Players are getting mugged, holding isn't called now and they can't get the instant replay right (G. Jennings fumble).

What if Suggs or Ngata gets held a few times this Sunday and the refs "let them play", what will be your thoughts then?

Be consistent is all I ask...
