Sorry ESPN, But Defense Still Wins Championships

11 posts in this topic

All year, we were bombarded with how "this is a passing league now" and "you can't win without an elite passing game." Well, we're at the final four, and we have two teams with top defenses, and two others teams who rediscovered defense for the postseason. The mantra proves true, and people would be wise to remember it.

Indeed, they always get high off of big play teams that never get tested by a truly elite Defense. Always jump on some ish. Now they can stuff their opinions when we take out NE and show that defense is what wins not 400yds a game passing.

It's still an offense-based league, no question about that. But, the current remaining playoff field indicates that defense is the trend that will dictate the Super Bowl this year.

That said, that doesn't mean that we won't see flashy offenses win a couple of championships over the next few years, especially after a proper offseason unlike the lockout-shortened one that the league experienced this year.

Most of the teams that made the playoffs had better than average defenses, and of the 4 teams left, I'd say there are 3 good defensive units left and 1 average one.

I still don't think people realize how good this defensive unit we have now is. Ravens didn't allow a QB to throw 3 td's in any game this year, and only gave up 11 passing td's total, along with 10 rushing for 21 offensive TD's, first in the league.

The statement i heard over the weekend was that Offense sells tickets but Defense wins Championships and so far two of the three top guns are done for the season and hopefully by Sunday night the third one will be done also.

Whoever wins the Super Bowl will be a team with a defense, I can assure you of that. I dont see the Patriots getting past the Giants or the Niners. Niners would run the ball so far down their throat it wouldn't even be funny after awhile.
