The Raven

Run Defense.

What happened today? Our run defense was awful. Cody was getting eaten alive. JJ looked like a JV player. I blame JJ singlehandedly for the 28 yard run (the one Harbs challenged) and for the TD. He got pancaked on the TD. But I thought JJ was so good at setting the edge? He and Cody got owned today.

Well, Arian Foster is a flat-out stud., and the Texans' offensive line might just be the best in all of football. But the defense couldn't get anything against him for a while today. It wasn't a good day for them, but the Texans oline is very, very good.

Yeah, they are a great OL, but we're a great run D. We stonewalled them last time.

Yeah, who is Arian Foster? Must be a bum or something.

They bested us today, but they weren't the 2nd ranked rushing offense in the league for nothing. And the good news is we don't face another Arian Foster in the playoffs this year.

JJ? You blame JJ. Go back to that play and look at Cary Williams. He had a chance to make the play and looked like he gave up. Yeah we got knocked on our butts during the run most of the first half, but we stopped him at the end. I give props to Foster for his performance today. He definitely proved he is an elite RB. I voted for him, Rice and MJD for the Pro Bowl.

Everyone has a day where they just get beat. Our run D got beat but the D on a whole showed up when needed. I wouldn't expect to get challenged that way in the run game by the Patriots. The Patriots offer a different challenge so I am more disappointed in the lack of big time pressure on the QB. We are going to need that against Brady & Co. Let's hope that Suggs can unleach one of those 3 sack games next week.

Their the number 2 run offense, but we're the number 2 run defense. I woulda thought it would've been a little more of a fight. I mean they killed us on the ground.

Yeah, I do. That was an offtackle play. As a 3-4 OLB , it's his job to contain the edge and stop offtackle runs. But he was busy being on his back.

Thats the best blocking scheme in the entire NFL, we'll never go up against another team with that combination of scheme, blocking ability and talent at HB. We're going to see a bunch of draws next weekend out of the shotgun so Im not really worried. The Pats aren't going to beat us running the ball. People laughed when I said the Texans shredded us with that scheme last year but it was the same story today.

Well Cary Williams was free and he just flat out did not make a play. And like everyone has said, they were #2 rushing offense.

Ha, I know I am too. We're not used to being 'outravened' by other teams.

It was so hard to watch. I still feel stressed out from the 4th quarter. Lol!

Honestly, I thought the adjustments we made in the 2nd half spoke volumes. Remember that Foster only got ~30 yards in the 2nd half. And that's because the Ravens were stopping him, the Texans didn't need to abandon the run until their last two drives.

We looked tired for some reason, but foster is a beast and they do have one of the best running attacks in the game

Ngata and Cody played like garbage.
We also couldn't contain the edges. Last game JJ had a monster game, this time, nothing.

I knew the Texans would do better than last. Their O-Line was playing out of their minds today. I've always said they were the best in the league.

Yea, in a zone run scheme the Interior d line need to get penetration to eliminate he cut backs, then the LBS need to set the edge.

Foster carried the ball 27 times for 132 yards but it broke down like this:

16 of the carries were for 3 yards or less.

3 carries of 4 Yards

5 carries between 5-8 Yards (7, 6, 8, 6, 7)

3 carries that totaled 61 Yards. (14, 19, 28)

He did a huge chunk on those 3 runs.

That's usually what Ray Rice does. A few yards here and there then he breaks off a big chunks. Unfortunately Ray didn't have any big chunks thanks to the clunker of an O-Line.

Whichever way you decide to chalk it up, thats just how running it works though. Thats just how it happens.

Maybe its because our offense couldn't sustain a drive at all in the 2nd and 3rd.

So basically three big runs accounted for most of his numbers. Unsurprising, he's a big guy. Guys like Peyton Hillis and Cedric Benson have also managed to get by us. Bigger bruisers will wear down even the best run defense if they keep getting the ball.
