Yeah, Let's Take Ed And Ray Out On Passing Situations (Not)

Okay, congrats Ravens. One down; on to NE.

Observation: once again, we looked timid on both sides of the ball.

The offensive play-calling was terrible. They put 8 men in the box and we run over the guard. Twice. On 4th and inches. And failed. Both times. Nothing but 5-step drops all game when they were rushing 5 and 6 consistently. Flacco had no time and our receivers seem to think the play is over when they reach the end of the route as drawn up. Now I'm not saying we need to run flea-flickers or reverses, but a designed roll-out to get away from the pocket that was collapsing around Flacco ALL GAME, might have been nice. Maybe instead of the back vacating the backfield EVERY SINGLE TIME we went shotgun, might give the impression to the defense that a run was still possible. There is no mystery with this offense, you can pretty much call every play based on the pre-snap formation.

Which, coincidentally, is true on defense as well. We rushed 4 and dropped 3 in a soft zone on nearly every single play. Our corners were outstanding. No question. Great game on the outside. Our linebackers outside of Ray are slow, and rarely take the right angle to the ball. We tackled better today, but no pressure means even a 3rd stringer with no business being on the field was finding receivers in the middle of the zone.

The coaching staff looked befuddled. Bewildered. And worse, scared. That does not exude confidence in yourself or your players. Once again, it seems there is a lack of heart, or at least the lack of killer instinct among the head coach and coordinators. That needs to change, and I don't know if John has the personality to change it.

Game ball to Ricky Williams. He ran hard. Picked up the tough yards Ray Rice seemed unwilling to go after. He kept us in this game and needs more touches is RR looks like he's more worried about his own stats than W's. Not sure yet, but that thought entered my mind watching him slip, fall, cut back, stop after a catch, and not leave his feet trying to get in the end zone. Maybe the Texans are just that good. Or maybe we're not. But this game shouldn't have been close.

Put it this way: If we play at the level we played today in Foxboro, we'll make the 45 given up by Denver look like the norm. We won't beat Tom Brady with this defensive effort or offensive play-calling.

But - I have faith. I trust that Chuck Pagano understands that if Tom Brady remains upright, we lose. That pressure is essential and one all-out blitz in 60 minutes won't cut it. I trust that if 53 and 59 are slow in practice all week, they'll scheme to protect them. I trust that our wide receivers coaches will school our young receivers on extending the play for Joe. And I trust that Billy Cundiff will regain his long kick-offs so we don't have to rely on our coverage unit to prevent a short field. Our guys have the talent, our coaches need to put them in a position to win. I have faith that they'll figure that out this week.

Good luck Ravens. New wallpapers in the graphics forum sometime this week.

Go Ravens! Be relentless!

Who else thinks we need to draft/trade for a wide receiver or an offensive lineman next offseason?
We have the depth talent on defense to last for a long time, but the offensive side worries me.

We definitely need help on the o-line desperately. I think Birk may retire, and McKinney shouldn't be the starting left tackle next season. Not to mention we may lose Grubbs in free agency.

As for WR, we have a bunch of number 2 receivers, but not a number 1 like a Hakeem Nicks or a Kenny Britt or an Andre Johnson. Now obviously the AJs and Calvins and Fitz's of the world we won't get, but if a guy like Michael Floyd fell because of character issues, or if Mohammed Sanu was available when we picked, I think we should grab one of them. Trading might be tough, since we're talking about two key positions for the passing game. With the way the league is evolving, people are looking for talented receivers and o-linemen, not trying to trade them.

We need someone like Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Gronk...
Someone huge to set the tone for the offense that make QBs look so much better than usual.
No offense to Boldin, he's tough. But not as good as a huge WR.
OLine needs either better coaching, or needs to be revamped completely. I saw no coordination or protection like during the Bengals game. Maybe it was the bye week. Whatever the case is, it's something to think about going against a resurgent New England Defense.

Ed Reed, the black hole. Yep, he is definitely too old to play (sarcasm). Hopefully Tom Brady thinks so.

Unfortunately, Brady wont even look his way. Ed will have to make a GREAT break on a ball to even get in the vicinity of a Brady pass next Sunday. Belichick wont allow it! He loves him some Ed Reed!

He also pressured Yates on his only blitz and ended a Texans drive with a stop against the run.

Lewis also had that incredible read where he stopped Foster in the backfield for a huge loss. That was awesome.
