The "I Learned Something New Today" Thread

169 posts in this topic

THIS THREAD IS INTENDED FOR SHARING THE NEW THINGS YOU LEARN EACH DAY, NOT TEACHING FACTIODS.

They say you learn something new every day. I figured I'd start a thread where we can post something we are pretty darn sure no one else knows. Please be selective in your posts and teach us something new each day. Try only using this thread for something YOU LEARNED TODAY. Dont fill this thread up with endless things you know that you think others dont. I'll start.

In 1943 the Eagles and Steelers merged to form the Steagles!

Well I am a history nerd, particularly of antiquity and the two world wars.

When World War 2 ended, Canada had the 3rd largest surface fleet and the 4th largest air force in the entire world. More than 1 million Canadians would serve in uniform by wars end, with the countries population being a measly 11 million.

Don't know how many people would know this but it isn't exactly common knowledge..
The only place in the US that produces gem-quality diamonds is in a state park in Arkansas.
You can go pay a cover charge and mine away and keep what u find

The nation of Russia is so large that it used to cover 11 time zones until the Russian government decided to remove two of them. Despite their abundance of space, the country has a population less than half the size of the United States (around 140 mil or so).

Oh wait...I did actually learn something today

Platypus saliva is poisonous. And apparently enough that a bite can put a person in the hospital.

No getting bitten by Platypi, y'all!

The right hand man of Joan of Arc was a distinguished knight called Gilles de Rais, he was also one of the most sadistic and prolific child serial killers in history.

Those that know me on here know my wife (who is from Pittsburgh) is a die hard Steelers fan. She is very superstitious and has to wear her Jersey,Terrible Towel, Steelers' socks, shoes etc. etc. for every game. She got a Steelers gift from a Ravens fan. It was a Steelers garden gnome and after the next Steelers loss, she thought there was a curse on it and hid it away, she is that superstitious. Anyway tonight, my young step-sons were rooting for the Broncos and just before the start of OT they were doing their impressions of Tebow kneeling on the sidelines called, "tebowing." Well my wife sees them doing it and says, "You guys are doing it wrong." Then she gets down on one knee and shows them the right way, while in all her Steeler garb from head to toe. I said, you just jinxed yourself and she looks at me and turns white. Of course, we all saw what happened 11 seconds later. I learned today that "Miss Superstitious' can have her mind blown. Yes, she is blaming herself for her beloved Steelers losing. It is freaking her out and I am still LMAO!

All night long I have been say to her, "I still can't believe you did that!" and loving every minute of it.
