Opera is pretty good. Rap is not music.
Haha. I was kidding about the opera. I just meant that I would take something as awful as opera over rap. Which indeed is not music.

Yes we have. That is real music people. Rap is basically a wasted guy talking fast and nonsensically into a mic while another guy erractically smacks the wall behind with a drum stick. No talent, no vocal abilitites, and not even any music or instruments.

Is this sarcasm or for real?
Cause I'm not an artist by any means but I've helped put together a few albums for local guys through my business and there is a lot more to it then that

Its not sarcasm in the slightest. I cannot stand rap. Its horrifyingly musicless. No guitar, no real instruments but drum and maybe electric keyboard.

This thread isn't meant for a "music theory" debate, but I'll just say since it isn't ur taste doesn't make it not music.
I listen to music from every genre. I don't really have a favorite genre. There is good and bad music everywhere.
I've heard some amazing metal/ rock bands like the ones you have listed but I have also heard some god awful ones that have almost no talent at all

Agreed. There are plenty of awful bands in my Genre. Im not debating that. Just strictly speaking rap is not music in that it has no music. You can call it poetry, I dont care, but it isnt music.

Way to broadcast your ignorance.

I have no issue with a person disliking a genre of music. But you're lying to yourself if you think a lot of MCs don't have talent or vocal abilities, or that instruments don't go into hip hop. You think the average person can rhyme and deliver like Black Thought or create an instrumental with a drum machine(a recognized musical instrument) or Pro Tools(a machine I'm sure your beloved rock artists have used) like DJ Premier? Please.

Strictly speaking, rap/hip-hop is music.

Ignorance lol? That is not ignorance. Clearly you dont understand. I know a lot about rap, my sister is really into it. You are hardly in a position to tell me when I am lying to myself. I can say with absolute honesty and integrity, without lying to myself, that rap is not musi and requires little talent. Yes I do think the average person can. And my "beloved" rock artists were around and recording before most of that techy crap. Straight recordings. Hip-Hop is music, that I agree, rap is not.

When I listen to Rap, I mainly buy the albums of four artists (Kanye West, the old Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi and The Cataracs).

The genre has lost a lot of passion over the years. The listeners are getting stupider as the days go by. For me, production is always first. The diversity of instruments that Kanye West uses on his albums is astounding. From violins to guitars to pianos to violas to drums to live choirs and so on and so forth. If the beat isn't catchy, I won't like the song. You're mistaken if you think Rap isn't music. Stop basing your judgement off of one or two Lil Wayne songs where he drowns in autotune and says the same things over and over.

Based on your comment on post #185 and the sentence I put in bold, I don't think you know much about rap at all. Rap is a core element of hip-hop. What, does your sister liking some rap make you an expert on genre?

And what does it matter that rock artists were recording before Pro Tools was invented? They use it today, like a lot of artists in numerous genres.

Metal bands don't use drum machines. They have actual people drumming. Also they don't use auto tune or any of that crap to make themselves better.

I never claimed metal bands use drum machines. I mentioned them because IMMStover said musical instruments aren't involved in rap. Not only do tons of producers use them, they incorporate common instruments like keyboards and guitars too.

[s]I don't know why you brought up auto-tuning[/s]. Most rappers don't use it. The better ones certainly don't.

Those are pretty heavy generalizations to put on a very popular and deep genre of music. BAD rap may be what you described but you could say something similar about any genre.

The Roots are just one of many hip-hop groups and artists that use actual instruments and perform regularly with live instrumentation.

Even Jay-Z has taken to touring with a live band, as many of his recent songs translate well into live instruments.

As someone who taught himself how to rap, I can say that it's one of the hardest things I've ever attempted to do. Yes, singing does inherently require a level of natural ability, but the ability to put together words intelligently (keyphrase: intelligently) and make them sonically-pleasing (an art that many freestyle rappers lack), is something that you can't underestimate.

Just to give an example of a hip-hop producer who uses live instrumentation regularly, here's a 5-minute clip of singer/producer Ryan Leslie recording a track featuring himself, Fabolous, and Cassie Ventura: (LINK)

The video is a cleverly-edited, condensed version of his studio session, but rappers have said that he actually works like this, where he serves as his own engineer and plays most of his own instruments.

My sister listens to a lot, so I have become veryy familiar with it. Yeah it is but in hip hop they use instruments. It matters because I hate modern rock. You siad that my precious rock artists used that stuff and my point was, no they dont. Thats why I dont listen to modern music, including rock. Its too fake.

You have obviously haven't become familiar enough with it to realize rap is embedded in hip-hop, and that live instruments can often be a background for rap. Your second sentence alone pretty sums up what you know about the genre. Others and myself have provided examples. Here's another. Elzhi is clearly rapping, but because of live instruments, it can't be considered/labeled rap?

To the Pro Tools comment, I was under the impression you like most forms of rock. My mistake there.

I agree with you, the bold part especially. Rap is music, even if some artists poorly represent the work that should be put into it.

Rap is what you do, hip-hop is what you live.

Therefore, rap music is about the artform (i.e. Nas bragging about his rhyme scheme, Common talking about how he's a better rapper than Drake, Guru discussing how his verbiage matches DJ Premier's production, etc.); hip-hop music is about the lifestyle (example: Jay-Z rapping about planking on $1 million, DMX telling a narrative about how he once sold drugs as a kid, Common serenading his then-wife, etc.)

Both are similar and borrow from one another. Both have identical sounds. The difference is in the topic. There's thoughtful hip-hop and ignorant hip-hop. Same with rap.
