Changing A Person's Post When You Quote Them

9 posts in this topic

I think you should not be able to change or alter someone's post when you quote or refer to his or her post in your post. The most common way someone does this is by bolding or italicizing something in a post. This is out of basic respect for what someone posts. Could some mods give me what is the policy and rationale on this?
It is a privilege to refer to someone's post, not a luxury, why should you be able to alter what someone originally posts?

While the OP should be treated respectfully, the ability to highlight or remove portions of a quoted post are often necessary for clarity. If someone makes a long post and someone else wishes to respond to only part of it, the highlight (or removal of the remainder) make it much more clear what the response is addressing.

I often bold what somebody says in long-winded post for the exact reason Mod 3 pointed out. To direct my comment to something they said in particular.

Plus sometimes its in good humor to mess around with somebody's post (as long as you do so within the COC).

"If someone makes a long post....", but what if someone has a simple 3-sentence post, or a one-sentence post, should someone be let to alter something that is clear?
