Time To Smallow Some Pride And Take Reed And Lewis Out

233 posts in this topic

Lets just say that there is a reason both are a HOF lock. Also, SI had only Ray Lewis on both the Greatest Degfensive Players of All Time List AND Current Greatest Defensive Players. And the guys at SI actually know what thye are writing about.

I think we should just pick up Denard Robinson and put him in for both Ray Lewis and Ed Reed because like Tyrod Taylor, he's such an exciting player. Forget that he has no experience at all in the league. Excitement wins games.

I was listening to the Fan again today on the way to work and people were still saying Reed has looked scared out there. Vinny said hopefully its because he was playing healthy and that he will do the "Deion Sanders all out" meaning he will play insane knowing he has a whole off season to get better.

Ray Lewis is still knocking them out. He puts more fear in the hearts of running backs than any player we have. Ray has lost a step and is still recovering from an injury but his anticipation and intensity are unparalleled in the NFL. Preston is still a negative want-to-be / never-was football player who always outsmarts himself. If I ever read his column it is purely accidental.

I heard a wise thing on the radio last night. Preston's article is a good thing because it will fire up Ed and Ray right before the playoffs. They will come out with a chip on their shoulder and reek havoc on the opponent that comes to play us.

Honestly, I don't think they needed Preston's article to be fired up. They both know that this season could very well be the end (Ray Lewis in particular). This is what they labored through the regular season to get to. One last shot at winner the Super Bowl. I think they will be plenty hyped to play hard. Preston who?

I think this will be Rays last season if we win the superbowl....and sad to say I think ed is holding back to save his body, whether its for a new deal or just to not be a 50 year old guy who cant walk or remember his name. whatever the case he isnt the same

I know we as fans hate to hear that but it is a job for these guys and have different motivations

I had been developing this idea for a while but it hit a new stride when it showed up in a Baltimore Sun article by Mike Preston. First I will evaluate the players:

Ed Reed. He and defensive coodinator Chuck Pagano have a history dating back to their days with the Miami Hurricans. Reed was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens for their dominant defense in the 2002 NFL Draft. he quickly excelled in many ways. Reed had nine interceptions twice, and has 12 career TDs, including in special teams. He also was dominant mentally. He made people around him better and served as a lead on and off the field. However, there has been a disturbing trend recently. It has been going on ever since he picked nine passes in 2008. We have just let it slide because, well, you know it's Reeeeeeeeeeeeed! Possibly due to fear of re-aggravating his many injuries, Reed has struggled with tackling (sometimes does not even try) and deep coverage skills. While we (myself included), have been hitting on guys like Bernard Pollard, Domineque Foxworth, Corey Ivy, Frank Walker, Cary Williams, and others for their faults, Reed's have been blown off.

Ray Lewis is in better shape. But barely. With a Super Bowl XXXV MVP, 13-time Pro Bowler, two-time NFL DPLOY (2000, 2003), 16-year veteran (1996-present), larger-than life leadership, charities, religiouse beliefs, physical toughness, and repsect, Lewis has been almost worshipped. The leader of the famous Baltimore defense for 16 years, Lewis would never miss tackles, and could help out in pass coverage. (Just look on youtube for his, Terrell Suggs's Reed's, and others' defining moments!) However, he too has started to slide. Besides looking very confused in pass coverage, Lewis has even missed a few tackles here and there. His siuation took a viral turn for the worst when he suffered a turf toe and missed a month! One curious fact, the defense played even better with Ray as a coach on the sidelines than when he was in. Lewis looked rusty as the defense surrendured 34 points to the San Diego Chargers a few weeks ago. I would definetly keep Lewis in most of the time, but take him out in passing situations. He has very capable backups in Jameel McClain and Dannell Ellerbe.

This will be tough for Head Coach John Harbaugh to do, I know. But would you keep them in all the time and risk a disastor deep in the postseason. Say, having Mike Wallace of Wes Welker blow by Ed Reed, or Tim Tebow running over Ray Lewis? I love these guys too, but harbaugh needs to have a talk with both and figure something out. But let's

LOL, they are fine when we go 12-4 in the regular season....but now before the playoffs "something is wrong"? LOL! Selling garbage Kool aid are we?

That is the most ridiculous troll noise I ever heard, and what makes it more suspect of not being a credible opinion is the timing.

ED and RAY are just fine!

GO RAVENS!

I have to say this is the most absurd post I've read yet and it doesn't really merit a response. The question the initial poster should ask himself is Who would the other teams rather face in the playoffs? Ray Lewis and Ed Reed or whoever has had to fill their shoes when they were hurt. These two perennial "All Pros" have something more in common than where they played college ball. They both have the "hearts of lions." Only a Spittsburgh fan would propose such a foolish move to prepare the team for a run at the Super Bowl. To even have it raised as a question by any self-respecting Baltimore fan is simply ridiculous as well as foolish. What impact do you think it would have on the team at this juncture? Why bring up such a ridiculous question as this? At this point in the season, you dance with the person who brought you to the prom and Ray and Ed both played major roles in getting us into the playoffs. I didn't see Jerome Simpson do a back flip over Ed Reed on Sunday and I didn't see Cedric Benson running loose in our backfield against Ray. I know they both have enough gas left in their tanks to produce more heroics before each man decides to hang up his cleats. The real question you should ask yourself is Is our defense better with or without Ray and Ed and it seems to me the answer is obvious.

I agree ray may have lost a step in coverage but is still a beast at stuffing the run and still a huge threat for anyone coming across the middle but to say ed is losing it is kinda crazy imo...its not that he isnt getting to the ball fast enough to make a play on it but hes dropping picks...he should of had 3 vs pittsburgh week 1 but dropped it..he dropped one in the harbowl..one in the first game vs cincy and in the second vs cincy the ball went right past his face he could of caught and there another game I cant quite name it but he dropped another...so added the 3 he has now plus the very catchable ones I named he could have 7 or 8 picks and we wouldnt be disscusing this right now..and if anyone thinks im just making excuses for my hero go back and rewatch those games and you will see he just has to catch it rather then being faster or smarter getting to it because he was there :)

I have this gut feeling that Reed will force some key turnovers in this playoffs and have big games. I'm expecting him to show up all the fans calling for his head.
[/quote]
I hope you're right. I have been wearing my Reed jersey this year hoping it would bring some luck just to see him blow a play that leads to the other team to score in almost every single game. That attempt at a bump tackle against the Bengals was outright sad. I felt truly sad for Reed knowing all of America saw that over and over and over again. :(

That was the last line of our defense penetrating deep into the Bengals' backfield. He took a bad angle on the tackle and knows it. If he makes the tackle and/or strips the ball from a fumble prone RB, you're singing his praises.

are u serious... how can u even add in bernard pollard and more importantly one of our top cover corners in CARY WILLIAMS.. yea he has come along way to make the starting lineup and i saw this happening since we picked him up off of titans roster... he still young and will become a more dominant corner next year with training camp.. but whats with the negativity towards ray and ed.. they are still the leaders of this team.. i cant believe u said this
