Our Sizz And DPOY

Well if you look at past winners and past defenses the numbers suggest Suggs is going to win it. Only two guys in the last 15 years have won the award when their defenses were not in the top 10. Bryce Paup in 95 and Strahan in 2001.

The last 6 DPOY winners have been on the top 5 defense in the league.

Well, I liked Terrell Suggs. I laughed off his comments, loved his enthusiasm, and loved his play. But what he said about Tim Tebow was rude and unescessary.

Hush. He speaks the truth. It's not even that rude. Maybe unnecesary, but not rude. I've always went to bat for Tebow in the past but not anymore; Suggs is 100% right. Tebow ain't good, he's lucky.

And I don't even know how this is relevant to Suggs DPOY talks.

Good job T sizzle defend your quarterback. Skip has got to be kidding Tebow over Flacco , what is he smoking?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk6IRGSDeOE&feature=channel_video_title.

Sorry to say, but I feel he disappeared in too many games....Jared Allen will get DPOY.
I totally agree. Sometimes I forgot he even played for us; in fact, had he not forced the fumble last week nobody would be having this conversation right now. He squeaked out a big play, one in which we've needed from him for sometime now.

It wasn't unnecessary. Skip inserts Tebow into every conversation he can and Suggs gave him a taste of it. How about this for rude and unnecessary?

Seriously, Bayless takes any chance he can get to knock Joe down (and Rodgers too) and promote Tebow. He likes to take dissenting opinions for ratings but for some reason he takes one popular consensus stand and that stand is against Joe.

This is off topic, but yes, he's hated on Rodgers since at least last year. He was all over the "if Matt Flynn can do it, Rodgers isn't that good" train.

Anyway, I'm glad Suggs is representing Baltimore the fans who haven't had their voices heard. No player is better at interviews or talk shows than Sizzle.

Sizzle i think is as close to a lock as there can be. All of the analyst support him and hes on a good team. Nobody likes to support a great player on a terrible team, it was all for nought. If you look at the last 10 years, 7 times the title went to a player on a playofff team. The only time it didnt was when Ed Reed had 8 interceptions, Michael Strahan broke the sack record, and when Jason Taylor had his beast of year.

Everybody likes a winning horse.

Suggs may be behind Allen, Ware, Babin, and Pierre-Paul in sacks, but he is ahead of them in forced fumbles and interceptions. In fact, Suggs led the league not only in forced fumbles, but in combined turnovers, which would be forced fumbles + interceptions, with 9 (7 + 2). Of all defenders with at least 7 sacks, he is the only one with multiple interceptions. Of all defenders with at least double-digit sacks, Suggs has the most passes defensed with 8, and the next closest is Cliff Avril with 11 sacks and 5 passes defensed.

I don't think Pierre-Paul, Babin, or Ware are really in the running at all because all they've got going for them are their sack totals, and Allen is the clear pick if you're looking at that stat, so I just don't see them as competition for Suggs.

So comparing Allen and Suggs:
Suggs has twice as many passes defensed, 1 more interception & 3 more forced fumbles for 4 more combined turnovers, and he did while being a leader and the best player on one of the NFL's best defenses, and he maybe a few sacks behind Allen, but he led his conference in sacks. He also contributed clutch game-winning plays for his team, whereas Allen performed on a losing team.

I think if you put it all together, Suggs is easily the most deserving, and frankly it'll be a travesty if the NFL gives it to someone else, because nobody deserves it as much as Suggs.

I agree with alot of what you said Callahan particularly that Suggs is the most deserving :) and that Allen is his greatest threat . But I think pierre paul really is a threat he doesnt just have sacks if you watch him play hes a complete playmaker. In the cowboys on a national stage he blocked a kick and sacked Romo in key drives and against the jets he was menacing.

And most importantly the commentators love him because hes a natural freakk and he shows up when they need him. Just some food for thought. But honestly with Suggs winning another award, AFC defensive player of the month, I think he might have the big one DPOY in the bag.

You musn't have watched Pierre Paul play much this year, the guy does it all from a 43 DE spot.

I loved what JPP has done this year. And to think that everybody thought he would go to the Raiders during the draft because he could do backflips and that he would be a bust. But the guy has impressed everybody and was well worth a first rounder on raw talent. I think he will eventually become the top DL in the league. Not only getting sacks but causing fumbles, pass deflections and tackles.

But in terms of stat lines. He is still a class behind Allen and Suggs. I agree with the one poster. IMO it comes down to Allen & Suggs at the DL position. What JPP does have going for him is the fact that he was huge in the run game posting 86 tackles which led the league.

Allen didn't play in one meaningful game all year. MVP awards are rarely given out to players on bad teams. Team success is a major factor.

I also think it'll come down to Sizzle, Allen, Woodson and Ware... Also, Pierre-Paul might be an honorable mention... He's giving his all for the Giants week after week

JPP should win Defensive Rookie of the Year if I'm not mistaken.

JPP is in his second year -- just another reason to marvel at how good he already is. The DROY award is going to either Von Miller or Aldon Smith.

PFF had Sizzle fourth in their DPOY rankings. Here's what they had to say about him:
Just as we’ve finished explaining to everyone why Suggs is actually a defensive end and not a linebacker he goes and plays a lot more in that position this year; not enough for us to actually change his designation within PFF you understand but next year who knows? In 2010 he played with his hand off the ground only 23% of the time and dropped in coverage on 9% of passing plays; definitively a DE but now he stands up just under 50% of the time while dropping an almost identical amount of times.

What this seems to have done is make him a more consistent player of the run, a slightly less productive pass rusher, but on the times he does drop, a significantly better player in coverage. He’s done a great job covering halfbacks out of the backfield and also knocked down two passes compared to none last year. In summary the best player of the run in the NFL just got better (you will never see him just lean on a tackle when he has outside contain) became marginally less good at getting pressure but found he’s a star in coverage too. Given all this maybe he will be a full-time linebacker in base next year.

EDIT: Oh, I got beat to it by Ed_Reed20... Nonetheless, HAD it been his year he probably would have won it, haha

It's likely going to be just between Allen and Suggs, though Ware and Woodson might pilfer a few votes from Suggs.

Allen did come within a half sack of the record for sacks in a season and also led the NFL in sacks.

But Suggs led the AFC in sacks (8 less than Allen, but the AFC is generally considered harder to get to the QB.)

Suggs led the NFL in forced fumbles, and had more interceptions than any of the other sack leaders.

I think Suggs has a damn good chance of pulling it down because he's been the best player on one of the best defenses and a playoff team in the NFL this year, whereas Allen has just been the best player on a terrible defense on one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Yeah... Hurts not to be able to say that either Ray Lewis or Ed Reed are the best on the D anymore... I like Sizzle too though

I think its released on Wednesday so we'll know soon enough. Reading through Pro Football Weekly they really do make a strong case for Justin Smith but it should be him and sizzle right there.
