Time To Start Pitta

269 posts in this topic

We should start using Pitta more in the intermediate passing game, because his hands are so good. But Dickson is a good red zone threat, he does have two TDs in the last two games.

On a side note, it's refreshing to debate something other than why Flacco sucks!!
That reminds me , the fact that Pitta has 34 catches with no drops argues against the idea that Joe's throws are somehow contributing to the high drop rate we've seen this year.

Oh oh. I hope I didn't open a can of worms here.

Disregard this post.

Well, that may be true, but I think that watching guys get hit in the face, chest, arms and both hands with the ball yet still not catching it is a pretty good argument in itself.

But, we all know the Flacco haters watch different games than we do, and will probably credit Pitta's superhuman hands for saving Joe from many horrible incompletions / interceptions.

Shh. Don't you know that certain posters on this board don't believe you when you bring such things as "logic", "data", and "facts" into the equation. Apparently "What I see on the field" is more significant, even though a lot of times it seems like certain people see a completely different thing from what I see.

This is comical. Pitta is without a doubt a better TE. All you guys who are saying that Dickson is the more complete TE have no facts to back up your claims. You can have the most athletic player in the history of the game, but if he cant catch the ball, hes going to be a cornerback( PrimeTime). Pitta has proven all year he is that guy who can be relied on on 3rd downs. His hands are great and he FIGHT for the ball. Dickson runs sloppy routes and does not have the sure hands. I could care less about how they block. Do you think NE is using Gran and Hern as blockers on passing plays? Hell no, its a waste of their strengths. Most of the blames lays on Cam and Harbs for bad management and not using their players strengths to win games. Personaly, We should use Dennis as a Slot Reciever more. I trust him more than evans and boldin at this point. Hes not going to compete with torrey "drop the ball" smith on speed, so leave him in. Q is not the same reciver he was and is honeslty not worth half the money we are paying for him. Torrey smith 400K a year, Q 8 Million a year. We need a VJAX, BMarshal , DBOWE, or Johnson to make this offense what it should be, not a 31 year old slow reciver who cant get seperation anymore and caught a case of the fumbleitis. Hell Plax would have been a great fit for us and would have been CHEAP.

I totally agree with OP; it is absolutely the right time to pick our #1 TE, and it is far too familiar: Pitta!!!

Harbs and Cam are better to start Pitta from now on cuz Cindy game is far too important game for the continuity of our ultimate journey.

I don't want history to repeat about dropping balls; Pitta is a clutch TE and when you need him for a 3rd down and a score, he will be there.

Pitta #1
Dickson #2

Period.....

I agree with most here. Those drops by Dickson were atrocious. In today's NFL a TE is a very important position and they must have good hands. Pitta had some drops this season also but I think he has been pretty solid most of the season and especially lately.

Dickson may lead in TD grabs so maybe he is better down on the goal line and slipping out of coverage but at this point I am more confident in Pitta.

Idk, Pitta has made his fair share of Red Zone TDs. Okay, only 2, but how many opportunities has he had? I think if Pitta had more opportunities, he would prove himself more.

Pitta has 0 drops IIRC. Joe has thrown the ball 3 feet over his head or out of reach but they are joes fault. Some of the dropped passes are Joes faught for not putting the ball where it should be. Like the screen passes to Ray that are 8 feet high. One of the least accurate passers almost makes Tebow look like manning.

Jump ball

I don't mind mixing it up in the endzone so we have more flex option on soft spot in the opposing defense. Overall, Pitta is a must start from now on.

When they're thrown "8 feet high" and its tough for Rice to make a play on the ball, they don't get logged as a drop. In fact, the system is very receiver friendly when tallying drops.

Yes, because a guy who's completing 57 percent of his passes this season and has completed 61 percent of his passes throughout his career is so much less accurate than a guy who is completing 48 percent of his passes both this season and has a career completion percentage of 48.5. Wow, 48 better than 61, I never knew that they tabbed completion percentage like golf scores, thanks for that bit of information. My god, Jamarcus Russell and his 52 percent career completion percentage is far and away better than Tom Brady's 64; let's get Russell - he'll lead us to the Superbowl! Smh, you know it would be more interesting if you actually tried to make logical statements to support your arguments.

Agreed, but how do you figure that Pitta wouldn't have done as well or better in the Seattle game? And, Pitta is usually open. And when he is tightly covered, he's great at playing the ball and making tough catches. I sometimes think about having a base 22 offense. (2 TEs/2RBs) Lol.
I never said that Pitta could NOT have done the same nor did I say COULD do the same. I'm explaining to all the Pro-Pitta fans that Dickson does not need to lose PT. If anything, as you say, put them on the field at the same time. In all honesty, Dickson is your best option overall. However, once you get inside the 20 and 3rd Downs Pitta is MAY be more sure-handed. Again, don't forget Dickson caught the TD with a nice throw from Flacco and a great catch by Dickson. I'm not ready to write him off for one bad game or a few drops. The problem is with ALL receivers dropping passes. Time to drop the Pitta over Dickson stuff. Not necessary. He simply reminds people of Heap and you can never replace Heap!

You can't replace him, correct. But, Pitta reminds us of him because he's pretty much just like him. He can catch consistently. Something we could always rely on Heap to do. I'm not saying Dickson doesn't have the ability, I'm just saying for all the athleticism he has you'd think he'd be open more. And for as many times as he's targeted, he should have quite a few more catches. Drops hurt a team. One drop can end a season.

Who do you trust more to catch the game winning catch in the superbowl? Ed, or Pitta? That's ultimately what it comes down to; who the coaches trust more.

actually, yeah you can replace Heap. As good as he was, he isnt a once a generation talent that could never be replaced.
Pitta could very well be as good or better than Heap. He has impressed when given the chance. Thats not the case with Dickson.

Let's put it this way. Pitta hasn't shown me anything that PROVES that he is above and beyond better than Dickson. I don't know why this whole Pitta thing has even risen. Dickson drops two passes and we're ready to decrease his time? These are probably the same fickle fans that wanted to cut Reed after a few fumbles, or bench Torrey because he had a few drops. It's not always about stats and numbers. Teams are built far beyond the numbers.

As far as Heap, no he is not a "once in a generation talent" but he is a unique player. If you mean can you replace his numbers, yes, but what Heap brought to a team is not replaceable. Let's not forget Heap had Boller for most of his time here. Who knows how good he would have been had he not endured such brutal punishment from hanging passes.

That's all I say on the matter. The last word belongs to whomever wants it.

It's been a lot more than two drops...

Drops have nothing to do with stats and numbers. They're drive killers.

Honestly, either one. If the game is on the line I'd take either one of them. I believe in them both.

As far as "getting open" that falls back on Cameron. I've recorded every game this year and I watch them 1-2 during the week before the next game, and I always see Flacco throwing passes to people that are covered. Very RARELY will you ever see a player open by design. I watched Brees last night and he had guys 5-10 yards in the open. There is no wonder he set the record. Taking nothing from Brees but Sean Payton deserves just as much credit for the single season record as Brees. So, getting open isn't always on the players. I'm confident in Dickson and Pitta in the clutch.

So I guess Cam runs the routes now? And defenders just choose not to cover a player? And players are just magically open" by design"?

I have heard it all.

There is some merit in having more formations with both TEs in the game especially with our lack of production from the WRs with or without Anquan Boldin. NE uses Hernandez and Gronkowski together at times and it seems to be effective. Of course, they also have a great slot receiver. This might help our patchwork quilt O-line keep Joe upright on Sunday and give Joe another dependable receiver to go to, especially on third down packages. If Pitta is half the receiver they think he is, I'm not sure why he isn't getting more game time experience. Hindsight is always 20-20 but the decision to release Heap and Mason isn't looking too smart at this point. Going into a key game like this, it is hard to imagine that we have no veteran receivers in the lineup other than Lee Evans. I'm not sure whose fault that is but I'm sure its not Joe Flacco's.

Well, right now it hurts, but in reality, its helping to build our future. Torrey, Ed, and Dennis have all gotten valuable experience that they otherwise would not have gotten,

Look at what Mason and Heap have produced this year. You can debate the decisions about who we replaced them with , but releasing them when we did was clearly a good move.

To be fair, Mason was buried in the depth chart in both places he went and was trying to catch passes from Mark Sanchez and T.J. Yates, and Heap went from Flacco to Kolb and Skelton. I think at least having Heap for one more season might have helped Joe on the intermediate routes this year. But still, the more experience young players get the better they'll be next year.
