Time To Start Pitta

269 posts in this topic

Gotta say that after another week of watching our wide recievers / TE not make plays and dropping passes, it is time to make some changes.

Starting with Dickson. Sick of watching this guy drop passes, or not holding onto a pass on the first hint of contact. Dickson may be the best athlete we have ever had at TE -- but he really makes me miss having Heap.

Speaking of Heap comparisons, the guy who DOES give me Heap flashbacks is Pitta. This kid has an astounding catch radius, and anything, and I do mean ANYTHING that comes inside that radius will be end up in his hands -- whether it be by force, or an acrobatic catch that borders on poetry.

Neither of these two are great blockers, so we may as well go with the better recieving option, which is Pitta by leaps and bounds.

These drops are costing us big time. The Cleveland game was (another) perfect example of how we let teams hang around unnecessarily.
And Dickson is not the only offender (see Boldin, Torrey, LaQuan and Rice as repeat offenders as well). But I am singling Dickson out for two reasons:

1. He is the worst offender
2. We have a very solution already in place

I dont want a repeat of our playoff game against PIT where Dickson was wide open and flat out dropped a critical pass. It's time for Dennis the Menace.

Agreed on all counts. I was a bigger Dickson fan just because of the fact he had more big play potential, but he really hasn't made any big plays, and he sure drops a lot too. Dickson may be a better athlete, but Pitta is a much better football player. Time for the "white tight end" to start. Let's go Harbs, start Pitta!

Agreed. Glad I got a Pitta jersey for christmas, his ability to snatch the ball has made me a fan since day 1.

Actually I think he is Hispanic, but that's even better! I can't think of any other successful Hispanic TE currently playing, so maybe Pitta can start a new trend.

It has been a problem for a LONG time now going back to Mason and Housh....These dropped passes make Flacco out to be a second rate QB in people's eyes and yes he does over and under throw a lot but so do other QBs. Pitta has proven time and time again that he can make cluch catches and he should be the #1 Tight End.

Agreed. I feel like Joe trusts Pitta more and therefore takes more chances with him, knowing that he'll likely come up with the catch. After seeing some of Dickson's drops I can hardly blame Joe for feeling that way.

Absolutley 100% think Pitta should be starting!! So, MAYBE he doesn't block as well as Dickson, but he CAN catch the ball and more importantly catches every 3rd down ball thrown his way!! To me, this is a no-brainer!

Aaron Hernandez??

Also, I didn't even know Pitta was Hispanic. But I agree with a lot of the things you said, and he's starting to look like a security blanket for Joe.

Isn't Tony Gonzalez Hispanic? Like Dominican or something?

What difference does starting make? Dickson is a better blocker (plus younger) thus he plays the primary TE role. Pitta comes in during passing situations usually as the 3rd receiver or in the slot because that's his specialty.

Whether he gets more looks is if Cam calls the plays to put him in or Joe looks to him.

I know this is no true comparison, but in my old Madden 11 franchise, Dickson was rated higher than Pitta but I swear that computer generated Dickson dropped as many passes as he has this year and the same Pitta would catch everything, so soon enough I was starting Pitta anyway and eventually I let Dickson go as a FA. I love both guys in real life and we're gonna definitely need both going forward, just thought it was amusing how analogous the those two Dicksons have proven to be to me, haha

i was Pitta lover since we drafted him because he looked so much like Heap. I remember the day we drafted him i liked him more than Dickson. Based on the season so far i trust Pitta to make that crucial catch when the game mattered then Dickson.
Remember Pitta is great at 3rd down espically in pittsburgh and 49ers games. He is heap junior. We need to start him over Dickson the drops are to much right now!

Exactly. I love big play potential, but I'd rather have a first down machine, red zone target that catches everything like Pitta.

If only he could block...

Yup. Joe is accountable for some, but his receivers almost never help him out. Boldin in the playoffs last year? Housh in the playoffs? Mason and Clayton vs the Pats?

Dickson lets Flacco down pretty often, though he has made some nice catches. Flacco and Pitta are pretty close, they're personal friends. Flacco trusts Pitta more.... Another instance where Cam and Flacco butt heads.

Dickson is clearly the more physically gifted TE, but Pitta is more dependable and a beast at finding holes in the coverages he sees. This offseason has really hurt the chemistry in the passing game.

Pitta really should be starting. An athletic tight end is nice, but at the end of the day the tight end is supposed to be the quarterback's safety net, and that means the guy who has the best hands needs to start.

yeah they are great buds. on twitter they always say Flacco and Pitta are the first of the offense on the field. Also they both have the Fu Manchus. They are really great. Dickson i dont know whats up with this guy... Pitta is going to get better and better and he is already a beast!

Bit harsh

Tony Gonzalez is fourth in the league for receptions for Tight Ends
74 catches for 826 yards and 7 TD's this season
That's slightly less receiving yards then Boldin and more then Torrey Smith

There are many players in the league you can call washed up and past it, Tony Gonzalez is not one of them

I've been hoping Pitta would get more targets for a while now. As others have said, the big-play potential Dickson offers is great but with how uneven the passing game usually is, a reliable option like Pitta is needed.

You guys are f'ing crazy, everybody here is so on Pittas jock its not even funny. I think everyone wants Pitta so bad because he looks like Heap and they want a white TE.

Dickson so much better for the offence, he gets down field and makes plays Pitta could never make. Thats what we need, not another possession receiver, we want to scare defenses. He does need to work on the drops but so does every single receiver we have.

I would like to see more 2 TE sets cause I really love Pitta but not enough to take Dickson and his 6'4 frame out. Maybe on those 3rd and medium like the 4-7 range put in Pitta but the majority of snaps should go to Dickson

"Plays Pitta could never make"?  That is not a fair, nor accurate assessment.  Dickson drops A LOT of balls and Pitta catches everything thrown his way. Much rather have consistency than the POTENTIAL of a big play. He dropped (again) two vital 3rd down balls this past weekend.
