Receivers Need To Step Up....and Now

I know its being discussed in other threads, but lets be honest, this receiver play needs improve and fast. I can't watch them drop any more perfect passes or not get separation from DBs. From watching the Lions and Chargers game, I was thinking just how fortunate Stadford and Rivers are. Their receivers consistently get wide open, with great separation. They go up and get jump balls, they make plays. The Giants game today, their receiver Hicks, i think, turned a slant route into a 99 yard td run. Some of this falls on Cam.

Lets be honest here, 20 points won't be enough to win some of these games against these playoff teams. It took 31 to beat the Bengals last game. Our receivers will need to make some plays during our SB run, if we're going to have one. They can help Flacco out.

One play that I really liked today was the short crossing route by Torrey Smith that isolated him onto one side of the field that enabled him to utilize his speed for great YAC. This needs to be done more.

Lee Evans, for christ sake step up. You're supposed to be a #1 guy, you didn't even go up for that pass in the endzone. Thank god Boldin is coming back, we need him.
Victor Cruz ( a 2nd Yr undrafted WR ) made that 99yd play and currently sits in Top 3 in receiving yds.
But when it comes to this team and our WRs they can't get seperation because we don't have creative play calling to exploit the field or the defenses weaknesses..... Every week teams exploit the middle of the field with slants, drags, inside posts , seam routes, motions to the slots with quick out routes. All things that are rarely used in our Cam-fense. Every game their will be a couple of these plays or routes used effectively then they are never used again. At least once a weak Boldin would be used on a nice slot route for big gain then disappear running 10 yd curls all game. Or how today Torrey caught that drag across the middle turned it into a near 30 yd gain. And never tried that again....

one answer - bring back Mason!
he could catch the ball...
we need a great end who doesn't drop the pass when it is right there!
He got cut by the Texans because of his drops...

Mason isn't the savior for the offense, that's why the Ravens cut him before the season started.

If Cam is back next year, I don't even want to think about it. He can't come back, the only way he could come back is if our offense puts up 40 points in every game here on out on way to winning the super bowl.
Cam needs to be fired no matter what happens this season. Even if we win the SB, Cam needs to go.

Can't wait till he's gone. Wish we got someone new this year

I'll say this much... this is one of the lesser bad game's Cam has called. This game was more of a L. Evans problem, than for any other player/coach. Boldin is on the decline at this point in his career, obviously so is Evans, D. Reed wont be back next year, so that leaves Torrey, Doss, Williams on the roster. The Ravens HAVE TO draft/F.A. a player similiar to a Julio Jones/C. Johnson/A.Johnson. That's the only thing this organization/Flacco is missing!!!

I am amazed that we have not added another WR to the receiving corps for Sunday's game. This game will decide whether we get a 1st round bye or not and the current group of receivers has not stepped up. We are fooling ourselves if we think they will against a Marvin Lewis team. The future is now as George Allen used to say. Without Anquan, Joe's options will be very limited.

Without Boldin, Flacco has very little experience with the receivers. They're all basically new, since Pitta/Dickson didn't play much last season. Not ideal for a playoff run.

Stickum was an adhesive substance that NFL wide outs placed on their hands and forearms to increase their percentages of catching a pass. It was banned in 1981
You need to try a pair of the gloves some of the receivers wear now. They're very adhesive and I'm surprised they're not banned.

Also, one more question. I've seen Joe throw a lot of sideline passes to Smith and a lot of them have been high throws. Are the throws high because they're off target or is Joe throwing them up to keep the ball away from coverage?
That's a pretty broad question ... the answer is probably "both".

Reference to the drops, tell me if a Dallas Clark, Jason Witten, or great like Tony Gonzalez have NEVER ever dropped any easy or catachable passes. Hell im sure Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome did as well. So give Ed Dickson a break. If great legends, and probowl tightend's are allowed to drop passes then so is Dickson.

Someone need to be a PLAYMAKER. Evans, Torrey, Doss. Baltimore needs it own Megatron, Andre Johnson. And really, the only wat that can happen is if QB can understand his receivers mentally. Just look at Joe Flacco and his receivers(Complete fail), then look at Colston,Meechem with brees. It's almost as they are living and communicating in a completely different culture of football. Lets get better. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
I agree, I think it'll be time to move on from Boldin/Evans and get younger, faster and bigger, and more afhletic. They're big time vets, but we need more explosiveness for what they're making. We need that 6'3"-6'5" jump ball receiver who can beat press coverage and has huge catch radius.

I don't think anyone is saying that. What I, and other people, am saying is that right now it looks like Pitta has better hands, seems to be as athletic, and has a better rapport with Joe than Dickson does. For the most important games of the year, wouldn't you rather start the guy who's having the better season? The guy that the quarterback trusts more should be starting in my opinion, and I think right now that's Pitta. Next year, after a full offseason and camp to work on their chemistry, then Dickson should get the start. And I'm not saying at all that Dickson shouldn't play, just that I think right now it would be best if his and Pitta's roles were reversed. And that's what I think most people calling for Pitta to start are trying to say. We're praising one guy, not trying to bash the other.

So now your comparing Pro bowl TE with 10+ years each of proven play against a unknowon TE who has fumbleitis. When Dickson starts breaking records then come back and talk about it. For every easy catch of of those guys drops they catch 20. If dickson had been making huge plays all year no one would care if he dropped one or two. Even in that situation. When you got another TE sitting on the bench who has better hands and has proven thus far he is more reliable catching TE, it goes to show you how bad the coaching is.

I think it is fair to say Evans has been a major disappointment. Every week he has been back I have been hoping for him to breakout but he never does a thing.

C'mon Evans! Earn your money!

Braylon Edwards was just released. We should make a play for this cat. Get him on the cheap and totally redo our WR corps for the future. He's big, fast although he has had drop issues.

Just what we need...someone else who can't catch the ball.

As unproductive as he was in San Fran and getting passed on the depth chart by Kyle Williams, a waiver claim for him couldn't hurt. I doubt he'd help this team much though.
He had a good season with the JETS last year, and had close to 1000 yards with like 6-7 TDs. That's good production from a number 2 receiver.

Can he return kicks? Because he definitely won't help fix the dropped balls problem. He has bounced around 3 teams now because he has some of the worst hands in the league.

I don't know about next season. Q will be back and I think Evans will still be under contract too. Torrey will obviously return and the team needs to see what it has in Doss and LaQuan. The TEs need their targets too.

I believe he left the Jets because of money, cuz he produced in 2010. Numbers don't lie.
You're right, he did play well. Looking at his numbers, if he was able to do that with Mark Sanchez, I wouldn't mind taking a look at him.

Seem like EVERYTHING needs to be perfect for our recivers.. The throw has to be perfect the rout must be perfect . Something needs to be done I see other recivers on different teams. Make ADJUSTMENTS to help out their QB. One handed circus catches, break'n off routes when the QB is in trouble something ANYTHING to help out. Joe seems to have to hit these guys in the numbers and even then they still drop the ball. All these drops and the non creativity the inabilaty to to make a GREAT catch is KILL'N me. We need more ATHLETIC recivers. Our offense is just way too vanilla from Cam on down.
Q will be back, but he's not a number 1 receiver IMO. He's a tough, crafty vet, but he doesn't make many explosive plays at this point in his career. He can move the chains from the slot, but we need to get another explosive playmaker as the split end of Torrey Smith and I think it needs to be a big, fast jumpball wide receiver with a wide catch radius, a protypical number 1 type in the modern NFL, if you will. I know:

1. Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson and I know Marcus Colston, who all fit that number 1 type mold will be expensive in free agency

2. We'll be drafting way too high to get an immediately NFL-ready rookie like Blackmun or Floyd who is ready to be a day one number 1 receiver.

3. Even if we were drafting that high, we have too many other needs that we can no longer ignore in round 1 such as Left Tackle, Center, ILB, possibly Free Safety or Left Guard if Grubbs leaves.

We're not making any personnel changes at this point in the season. Hopefully Evans can step up this week.

Assuming those three players hit the market, I doubt Ozzie and company would get into a bidding war for them. Again, with the money and draft picks already invested at WR, the organization could easily decide to go with what they have next year. And we haven't even discussed the contract situations of Joe, Rice and Grubbs. On top of all that, bringing in a WR like Bowe, V-Jax or Colston would essentially bury Doss and LaQuan's chances of truly developing.

The way I see it, if the team does acquire a notable WR in 2012, it'll be likely through the draft.
