Ed Reed's Role On Goal Line Downs

53 posts in this topic

I love Ed reed but hes really fragile nowadays. After every tackle he gets up holding something, sometimes its not even his shoulder/neck area. We really need to pick up a safety in next years draft, because that position isn't the strongest as in years past.

well this is how it is for him,if he doesnt need to make the primary tackle then he wont go in ,if someone ealse has it or perhaps 2 other defenders then he wont help, if he is the primary he will make the tackle ,he isnt geting any younger guys, but i still consider him the best at his postion and we should be glade hes on our team.

How about him stuffing mendenhall at the goal line in the playoffs last year? Cmon fellas he cant make every play!! And for those who are questioning reeds play making ability "WOW" he missed 6 games last year and led the league in picks anyway and hes having an off season and people question him? Cmon you dont just lose your ability just like that especially from one of the goats like himself smh

I believe we will be seeing Ed for the last time today in a regular season game at the Bank.

He's not laying off hits because of lack of desire or because he's not giving 100%. He is giving 100% of what he now has and I hope that he can make it to the end of the road this year. The man is in serious pain and should be respected for what he has done this year. He's not only the greatest safety ever to play the game, but also one of the most driven and bravest players in the NFL.

God Bless Ed Reed.

My question is why has Ed Reed been basically non existent this year?
He isn't, QB's finally learned to throw away from him.

He's also been slow to the ball I've noticed. I love Reed, but he's one of the reasons we have been giving up big plays. He just comes in late on the plays.

Un-frickin-believable.
Does anyone remember Reed's 107 yard INT on McNabb a couple years ago? That is Ed's role in the red zone. First and goal does not mean the opposing offense is going to run run run. Ed is there to prevent those TD passes in the back corner of the end zone that everyone tries for when they find themselves a couple yards away from the goal line.

The past few weeks all I've seen from him is missed/half-hearted tackles and bad decisions in pass coverage, he honestly seems to be a liability right now.

It's not just Ed though. Alot of the defenders gave up on that specific tolbert play I watched it was great anger. I think its a motivating issue for the defense. Same as when they defend FGs and extra points. No effort.

Guys, Ed is human and playing with that type of injury, got to take the good with the bad with Ed and part of that is tackling. He will stick his nose in there every now and then but I would rather that be minimized to possibly extend his career. You guys losing faith in Ed, he will have a game or games where he gonna make you guys back up off the " its time for him to retire " talk. The nature of playing FS is you will seem non existent at times. Atogwe, Collins,Rolle,Rhodes..... you name a FS and I'm pretty sure I could name stretches where they seem non existent. Just b/c they not getting picks and making big hits doesn't mean they are non existent though.

I love Ed, have since the Cane days.
But we must soon face reality his best days appear to be behind him.
To say he is still one of the best on the NFL is being very generous.
Today's Browns game was painful just watching Ed running around on the field and trying to knock people down with brush off tackles. His speed is on a demise as he regularly gets run past, and he also lacks the make up speed that used to allow him to take such gambles.

Now Webb...that's our next Ed Reed!

We all love Ed Reed, but something is not right with him.

If he is truly one hit away from permanent injury, then he should not be out there playing - both for himself, and because he is becoming a liability for the Ravens.

Remember the old days? When Ed was also a ferocious tackler and a ball hawk? This season he is neither.

Reed may be gone after this year, which is sad.

He will bounce back man and it will have everyone singing a different tune. The FS position is notorious for guys being MIA at times and since that's neva really been the case for Ed Reed ( it has been the case, I remember stretches in the past when he seemed non existent even though we all know he is neva that ) and we spoiled on him playing up to his all world self putting up all world stats and making all world plays, people are thinking he doesn't have it anymore, lol. Now we see what other teams feel like where it seems like your FS is not making an impact b/c I can name several teams where this is the case. Ed's fine man, he's fine.

Thank you, do you guys realise he's on pace for his highest tackle totall since 06? The picks arent there right now but he'll have a stretch where he gets like 4 pick and all will be well. We as a fan base have been spoiled by Reed so when hes not getting a pick every game and not scoring TDs people thinks hes old and cant play anymore. But really hes playing as good as any FS in the league, QBs are just not throwing his way.
I think people should try an watch other safties and see how Reed is still the man. I remember during the SF and Steeler game watching San Frans saftey miss so many easy opportunities for a pick that Ed wouldve eaten up.

Alright, this isn't exactly related to Reed's goal-line duty, but I have an additional theory as to why he hasn't had as many picks.
Now, I'm no defensive back coach. I know next to nothing about it, but I have a theory. In addition to the fact that teams just throw away from Reed, I have another theory.

We've been playing a lot more press coverage this year than in years prior. We all know Matty liked to play soft zones and off coverage. One of the ideas of playing press coverage is to funnel the WR towards the sideline - To take away the inside of the field. When playing "off and soft" coverage, the CB allows the WR to take the inside. So, the "off and soft" coverage funnels the WR to the inside, guess who's inside? Ed Reed. When you funnel the WR to the outside, you are generally going to have a safety over top, but because the WR is outside, I guess you could say there is less opportunity for interceptions. Obviously, when the WR is funneled inside, there are more players there, so more opportunites to get picks.

I don't know. This might be just stupid rambling. I might not have a clue what I'm talkin about. Anyone else know anything about this stuff? So yeah... thats it...
