This stuff is crazy. Between football and hockey, the concussion issues are ridiculous nowadays.

I hate lawsuits like this.
There is a vast world of knowledge available to us all. If we are putting our bodies at risk doing what ever activity, its our responsibility to be informed of those risks, and act accordingly on our own.
No one MADE these people play pro football.
Yes my heart breaks for their conditions. No question, but to say it is some one elses fault or responsibility in my opinion is a bit much.

There was a second article that explains the players are looking for health benefits and this one over painkillers is interesting because Toradol is given as a shot. It looks like it is an effort to put these suit in several different courts. A lot of the new head injury research is within the last 20 years or so.

You also have to look at the gains that have been made in understand head and spinal cord injuries because of football and the NFL should take care of their own.

You guys see this story about Jamal Lewis and three other former players suing the NFL for lingering medical problems caused by concussions?

I see both sides of this and I go back and forth. If the NFL and Players Union used a little of the $9 billion they rake in each year to help with better post-career NFL induced injury I'm betting a lot of this kind of stuff would go away.

Woops: Forgot the link - http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7379325/ex-rbs-jamal-lewis-dorsey-levens-sue-nfl-concussions

well players do make millions of mula
Median NFL salary is ~$770,000/year with 3 years being the average lifespan of an NFL player. Guys making minimum in those 3 years are getting $375,000-$600,000/year (with the median being $770,000 that means far more players are getting close to minimum money than the big contracts).

After taxes, you're saying most NFL players will make ~$1,000,000 (after taxes and taking out other things hidden in contracts) for their careers. Sounds like a lot ... but when you are talking medical treatment for brain injury that's not a lot of money to work with.

A lot of people don't understand that but just assume players are suppose to be set not knowing medical expenses after their career has ended. They assume how they would live if they had that money not accounting for the differences in that persons lifestyle and cost of living.

The reason why it seems as if there's a bigger concussion problem these days is because concussions were underreported in years past. Only recently have people been stressing the severity of head injuries. Concussions have always been a rampant problem. No one has done anything about it until now because no one took it seriously until it was too late.

That would explain all these issues of the older, former players experiencing dementia and the likes.

Exactly. It took the extreme case of Mike Webster and a few other retired players for active players to take notice. The effects of concussions outside of football have also hit headlines, notably the 2007 murder-suicide of WWE wrestler Chris Benoit and his wife and son.

Benoit's autopsy showed that multiple concussions over his 22-year career made his brain resemble that of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient. Combined with past steroid abuse, painkiller addiction, pre-existing psychological issues, and an inordinate amount of stress, and you had the recipe for a grim cocktail that resulted in Benoit suddenly snapping and killing his family in a trance.

The Benoit murder-suicide prompted Congress and sports leagues to take action and do more research into the long-term effects of head injuries. Former athletes came out in droves, telling stories of how their past injuries affected their quality of life.

This lawsuit is yet another reminder of the long, long history of concussions in professional sports.

I remember that whole Benoit situation. That's when I actually watched wrestling, and I think I had really grown to hate the guy because I believe he had turned heel not too much before that situation. It wa probably that and roid rage no doubt.

Come to think of it, does anyone remember Jamal Lewis having suffered any reported concussions during his time with the Ravens?

He might've had one with the Browns, but I can't recall.

I can't think of the Ravens ever saying he had one, but I do remember his final game with the Browns. I remember reading this story back then: http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/12/cleveland_browns_running_back.html

The interesting thing I didn't think about then was the line about his MRI showing abnormalities. Sounds to me like he'd had more than that one concussion.

Somebody give these millionaires some more money, I'm sure that when they were playing they had no idea they were risking their health and physical wellbeing.
