It only comes in to play if it's a 2 way tie between us and Houston. Say we and Houston win out and NE loses out, then we finish ahead of Houston because it's a tie between 2 teams and we beat them head to head. But if we both win out AND NE wins one of the two games, then you have 3 teams with the same record, and head to head doesn't effect a 3 way tie because our win over Houston has nothing to do with NE. Houston wins the three way tie-breaker because they'd have the best conference record out of the 3 teams. Then, once it's decided that Houston is number one, the tie breaker starts over for Baltimore and NE and we would win that based on strength of victory.
Yea, that's the part I was missing. Because we didn't play and beat NE the head-to-head is thrown out in a three way tie. So, we need both NE and Houston to lose 1 of the final 2 and we win out to take #1 seed. If we win out and they both don't lose 1, then we get #2 seed. Or, Brady decides to take a vacation and NE loses both of their final 2 and we win out, making us #1.

Oh yea ..I bet that's what's gonna happen

Yeah, but I agree with the title of the thread, I'm totally fine with a 2 seed. In fact, I think I'd prefer it because it means less of a chance of seeing Pittsburgh in the divisional round, since top seed plays the lowest seed and they'll be # 5. The only way we see them is if both they and the 6 seed (which is still wide open) move on.

Also, about this:
our common games are the same (we lost to San Diego and they beat them, but they lost to Pitts and we beat them - don't think it matters we did it twice).
It actually would matter that we beat Pittsburgh twice, because the tiebreaker is the best record in common games, so the Steelers would go as 2 wins in our common games record. The reason common games doesn't break for us is that the Pats have 2 wins over the Jets. Their 2nd Jets win cancels out out 2nd Steelers win.

NFL.com still has Steelers ahead of us and says we both clinched the wild card, really hope they made a mistake, but they are the NFL...
quite simply, they are wrong. We win the H2H with Pitt giving us the division. Division leaders get the top 4 seeds. We are #2.

I'm sure they are simply in denial. Kind of like ESPN never showing the stat with us taking over the #2 seed either.

I'm not as worried about the Pats as I am a team like the Steelers, because I think we can score on the Pats. And we've played well in Foxborough the last 3 times we were there, one one game and had a play in each of the others to win it at the end.

Second seed is better anyways. Because in all likeness the Steelers or Ravens are going to end up playing the 1 seed. Unless the 6th seed wins on the road. Jets/Bengals.

I would prefer to leave a divisional game out of the playoffs. Because any team can win.

I guess this is the right place since we are talking about the seeding. The Week 16 Playoff Scenarios have been released and......

Baltimore can Clinch the AFC North with:

1) BAL Win + PIT Loss

Baltimore can Clinch a 1st Round Bye With:

1) BAL Win + PIT Loss + HOU Loss

Though..... New England can lock up the # 1 Seed:

1) NE Win + HOU Loss + PIT Loss or tie + BAL Loss or Tie

So with that said we need to become Colts fans, Rams fans and Dolphins fans this week. Colts play Houston and can help us clinch a 1st Round Bye, Rams play Steelers and maybe a Christmas miracle can happen and they pull it off so we win the Division. Maybe Miami can do something to that horrible defense of the Patriots to prevent them from having a shot at clinching the # 1 Seed.

I actually played 4 hours of HALO so I would not have yet another night ruined watching IF Pitts won.
NOW, I am sitting back and watching the game- DVR'd.

Just to clarify some confusion in this thread so far, it's been touched on a little bit, but I wanted to just make a post just about it.

The head to head tiebreaker is first in the case of a three way tie, but it can only be applied if one of the teams has swept the other two teams head to head.

If the Ravens, Patriots, and Texans are all tied (remember that divisional tiebreakers are applied first until there is only one team left in the division, so the Steelers would be the first team out), then the head to head cannot be applied because the Patriots did not play either the Ravens or Texans, thus it is impossible for anyone to have swept the other two.

Yep.

If the Texans and Ravens win out. And the Patriots lose one of their final two AFC games (thanks 1/28/01) then the Texans would have the 1st seed because of conference record. We would hold the tiebreaker on the Patriots for the #2 seed. Patriots would go to the 3rd seed.

So there is a lot riding for the Pats.

No its true. By saying clinched it means at worse both baltimore and pittsburg will be at least wild cards. But neither of us have clinched the division. Likely the division won't be clinched until 17.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the Ravens get the second seed over the Texans becasue of the head to head win. Even though the Texans have the better conference record?

Yes. The head-to-head applies if the standings stay the same. It only won't apply if the Ravens-Texans-Patriots all find themselves tied again.

I dunno...the Pats put Andre Carter on IR today (ESPN mobile alert).
That is a pretty big loss. Carter has been a one of the few bright spots on their defense. He's really had a good comeback year after leaving the Skins. Their pass defense just got that much worse.

I know! This is the first time I've felt like I was watching a Ravens game and wasn't watching a ravens game. I've been excited watching the squealers lose, but with what was at stake for us, it was just like a Ravens win! Great stuff.

I kid you not, i was getting loud as heck, an realizing i was routing for a different team. But man 49ers looked like us, just like us.

Wow, all this talk yet we still have to win 2 games one of which is the Bengals on the road.
When does the "If we lose 1/2 games here is our road through the playoffs" thread begin? :D

Not until we actually lose one. Browns are @Home and we are a different team at home. It will come down to the Bengals game on the road. If we lose that, we will already know who we will be playing because first week because everything will be set. Like I said, if we blow it again, heads may roll.
But what happens if NE loses 1, and Houston & Baltimore both win out? Then there is once again a 3-way tie. What would the seeding look like in this situation? How do the tie-breakers work? If I'm not mistaken, the Ravens would have 3 conference losses, as well as the Patriots. Texans would only have 2. So Texans would get the #1 seed, right? Then who would win the tiebreaker versus the Patriots? It would be a strength of victory thing, right? Which means that article released by the NFL & ESPN a week or so ago that says the Ravens are guaranteed to have the highest strength of victory out of the Texans, Patriots, and Ravens, would mean we would have the tie-breaker over the Patriots and we'd have the #2 seed, with Patriots @ #3?

So basically, if we win out we are guaranteed the #2 seed, and the only way to get the #1 is for both Houston and New England to lose a game?

Exactly. (I'm glad somebody finally 'gets' it).

If we win out. No matter what we at least get the #2 seed.

#1 seed is hard to obtain. Both the Patriots and Texans would need to lose a game. If its a three way tie. Texans get the 1 seed because of Conference Record. Then Ravens would have the tiebreaker with NE. NE goes to 3. Ravens to 2. Common Opponents would be not applicable because their % would be the same. So then it goes to SOV. Which we've got.

Yes ... unless NE loses their final two then no matter what Houston does, we beat them because of head-to-head.

I'll make a bold prediction already. From what I have seen with this team this season, we go in as a Wild Card, our playoff run ends with that game. Its just that kinda year.

You get an 'A' for team spirit. You get to the playoffs, all bets are off. Everything that happened in the regular season means nothing. Its a whole new season, with new attitudes, new injuries, new bad calls, new luck. New everything.

the cleveland game doesn't concern me, but the last game on the road in cincinnati against a team that's going to be fighting for the final wildcard spot does... i have faith the guys will handle business, but this is a crazy game where crazy things can happen. we were all witness to that on sunday night.

home field can be ours, boys. let's do!!!

Beating teams with winning records?

Which team isn't flawed going into the playoffs? To write us off is a joke. Patriots have zero D and just lost their only pass rusher. Steelers are limping into the playoffs. Jets look slow. Texans have a 5th round rookie QB.
