Why Was Barnes Traded For A 7Th?

24 posts in this topic

In a year where we needed all the sub pass rushers possible we traded away someone with so much potential. I'm not saying this only because of the game(they can keep Gaither) but I always thought and hoped Antwan would get a chance to start and would probably have produced if given the chance. Not only that, we got NOTHING in return for him.

Even with Kindle there was no reason to get rid of him if you only get a 7th round pick in return.

Sure there is. We had a crowded LB core and he was deemed expendable.

While I agree with you, how would we have known? He got cut in Philly and technically doesn't even start in SD. He was in because of injury but usually rotates in. I agree though Harrison and him have kicked our [profanity deleted] in the release department.

The guy played over his head lastnight. He was highly motivated going against old team in prime time. The Ravens ran into a buzz saw lastnight.

2 reasons he was traded.

1) Mattison was D-Coordinator not Pagano so he didn't get enough chances on the field to make an impression ( similar to Kruger ) although Barnes saw field some it waasnt as a pass rush specialist like in. SD.

2) drafting of Kindle made front office think we had our next pass rusher ( although his accident occurred. ).

If Pagano was coordinator then Barnes would have been used correctly and still apart of the team.

I tell you what though, it's nice to see former Ravens performing well in other teams. Shows you how well this organization picks their players.

and yet at the same time makes you wonder a lot of other things, like SBs lol

Even if I knew Harrison was going to be as good as he turned out, I still wouldn't want him on this team. He's a terrible human being...

Your forgot about the parts where he was lazy, took plays off, couldnt tackle, and thought he was too good for special teams. Barnes has always been a good pass-rusher, but he was a one-dimensional player and didnt show the desire to get better. Having Mattison as a DC probably didnt help, but in actuality he never really made an impact in 3+ seasons.

There were a lot of people on the boards that felt like we should have hung onto Barnes. He was our best pass rusher outside of Suggs when we let him go. It didn't show up in sack totals (in part because he didn't get that many snaps) but he was in the backfield almost every snap he was in on.

Was mad at the time and im even more angry now. We could of had some speed and a pass rush on the opposite side of Suggs but instead we have the former underrated unsung hero in JJ who has now become very overrated. He is still solid in run support but thats about it.

Barnes should of made the team over Gooden any day of the week and twice on sunday.

It was easy to see this guy was in a doghouse for some reason. How much of it was deserved we'll never know. He made plays for the Ravens when given the opportunity and thought at the time given the lack of players with pash rush ability he didn't get more of a chance. We see the same thing happening now with Ellerbe who seems to be in Harbs doghouse, hopefully he is able to work his way out and isn't shackled to it. That said, who am I to argue with the coaches methods, which seem to work.

Assuming Kindle doesn't fall down the stairs, there wouldn't be a problem withit.
[/quote]

But we traded Barnes well AFTER Kindle's accident. He should have been kept as an insurance policy for Kindle.

don't know about that. he was EXTREMELY nice to my 8, 5 year olds and me when he signed our autograph. He actually talked to us for about 5 min. Very cordial and down to earth.

While true, Barnes was also traded after Kindle's doctor reported that Kindle was recovering much faster than anticipated. At the time of the Barnes trade, Kindle was anticipated to return during the season. However, this did not happen.

However, I completely agree with you on keeping him for insurance. Completely agree.

I'm worried about Kindle in the back of my mind, but JJ has been playing well.

As far as the topic: logjam at LBs plus he was in our doghouse

Looking back I think all of our sacks were because Joe held onto the ball too long. Not to take anything away from Barnes because 4 sacks are still four sacks but it's not like he was unblockable on Sunday.
