My Hard Drive At Home Froze

17 posts in this topic

Almost two weeks ago, I was browsing a web site of a t-shirt firm called Land Snark, when my hard drive froze. This was on my computer at home, and I was instructed by an internal order to disconnect and try again.

I followed the order, only to learn from an internal diagnostic that my hard drive froze. I had been speaking of this with my brother over in Davidsonville, and he suggested I check the 'net for a replacement hard drive, while my former history teacher from high school (who currently serves on the council here in Clinton) suggested that I would be better off getting a new computer.

This is why I haven't been speaking to all of you here as oftern as I liked to or had been. I welcome your comments, as I consider all of you to be friends here.

Sorry to hear that. What do you mean it froze?

BTW, I do all my electronics shopping on newegg.com. Good deals, and awesome customer service / shipping.

To be honest, Purple, the tees cover many subjects, including politics and pop culture.

The brand also has a similar imprint for the Chicago sports scene called CubbyTees.

What I mean, Flynismo, is that the hard drive froze - it basically stopped on me. I have to post from the library currently.

did you check the connections to make sure nothing popped loose? It is rare for a hard drive to just lock up; and usually you'll hear weird noises for a couple weeks before it happens.

But no biggie either way... Good hard drives are insanely cheap these days.

Also, just so you know, you dont have to replace your entire computer if your hard drive dies, you can just buy a new one and plug it right in (make sure the connection is compatible with your motherboard -- sorry if you already know all this; just letting you know in case you don't). You'll need to reinstall your operating system, so make sure to have an install disc handy.

I have some good news concerning my computer situation. This past saturday a friend of mine gave me an older computer she didn't need any further. It is an HP Pavillion zd8000 - rather used - and it has an Office application for it on there. Now all i need are some memory sticks to work on my story ideas.

I just need to know where on this particular model the memory stick fits into the computer.

I'm also going to try to find a good and affordable wi-fi provider.

I welcome your comments and advice.

This is a laptop, right?

It takes DDR2 memory; you can browse some here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007609%20600006176&IsNodeId=1&name=200-Pin%20DDR2%20SO-DIMM

As for where it goes, you'll need to unscrew the bottom of your laptop, and you'll see where and how the memory is already installed; pull those out and insert the ones you just bought..

To find the proper memory for your laptop go to www.crucial.com and enter your make and model into the memory checker tool on the front page. then use the link Fly posted to match up the proper type. Make sure you get a matched pair (2 sticks) of ram for best performance.

As far as how to install it varies by laptop. Some have a hatch at the bottom where both modules are located. others have it split between one on the bottom hatch and one mounted beneath the keyboard.

I found this on HP's website.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about USB memory sticks to save his work on. Not RAM.

Ha, I belive you're right. If so, he may have bigger troubles than first assumed :D

Yeah George, if all you need is something to save the work to, just go to walmart or staples and grab a USB flash drive from there.

4 GB should be large enough; if you are gonna use a lot of large pictures for your stories go with an 8 GB drive.
