As much as our team played like ballsoSOFT University tonight i noticed how badly we were out-coached....

First off, i love Jimmy Smith and feel like he is going to be a solid corner he was not ready to start. I realize webb (our best corner) was hurt i would rather have freakin chris carr out there.... just seeing how jimmy smiths confidence was shot after being torched was disturbing, let alone embarrassing. I hope he keeps his head up

Secondly, its reaaaaalllyyyy frustrating when I know what is going to happen before the play starts and we continue to get torched by the same technique without any defensive audibles. Everytime they motioned the running back to the outside i could tell if we were in man or zone , blitzing or not. Doesn't make it better that we get no pressure on phillip rivers who still has the potential to be a top 5 QB.

Thirdly, Chuck Pagano has been doing an outstanding job this year but made absolutely NO adjustments this game. For Example we all know Sizzle is arguably our best defensive player and pagano allowed Norv turner to make him a complete non factor. when he made 1 nice adjustment(stunting him where he almost killed rivers) it was like 3 touchdowns to late.

Also everybody is bashing flacco but put yourself in his shoes. Don't get me wrong sometimes i feel like its time for a new qb like the rest of us but in reality we all know its not. For instance when you have a nice balanced long drive and your streaky kicker misses a field goal its frustrating. Let alone your offensive coordinator game plans every play so that ray rice is the number one read. Oh yeah don't forget your wide receivers get ABSLOUTELY NO SEPERATION and your OC "doesn't believe"in audibles. Plus the defense is running a 4 man rush killing your o-line and once again nobody makes a adjustment, no chip blocks or anything.I feel like our offense runs the same scheme every game unlike every other team in the NFL who bases their scheme off the opposing defenses weaknesses. Until we are able to figure out ourselves on offense we are gonna get to the same spot every year and lose because we can't get over the hump.

What does everybody else think? I know some of y'all have ALOT on your minds right now lol
I disagree, this one was on the players. The play calls were correct most of the time for the defensive formations they were giving us when u factor in down and distance. Maybe the protections coulda been tweaked a little but it wouldnt have made much of a difference. We just got out played, period.

I don't think it was the coaches. A lot of people like to say outcoached but I think it was simply outplayed. It was the players. This late in the year with all the film teams have, they know what you are going to do and we know what they are going to do, you have to out play now. Ed is a vet yet we continued to see him chase plays as the ball sailed over his head along with the corners. Ed was trusting his guys to get to the QB and hoping to jump a route for a pick but after a couple of times he should have adjusted as the young CBs were not holding up in man coverage with big cushions. Ed never adjusted. I never saw our guys beat their man. I saw blitzes constantly picked up and no interior lineman beat the one on one matchup the blitzes caused. So It was the players on this one. Not Cam, not Chuck. No player really showed. Everyone was blah. I thought Torrey made a couple of plays and Dickson's catch was nice. Reed got the late return but that was about it. It just wasn't enough against a desperate team that pulled out all the stops to get a win. The Chargers sold out. The Players played for their playoff lives, we played like we had 8 more lives.
Let's not used the tired cliche that we got out coached. We got out played.

No, it was on coaching, especially on the defensive side of things. More Cover 2 should have been called by Pagano after the Chargers second TD. Even if Ed wouldn't have lurked down, he was in a Cover 1 look for most of the night so whatever side he went to, Rivers would have just threw it to the other side.

Then Cam abandoned the run, history shows with this team that we most times lose when abandoning the run. When they went up by two scores, he just abandoned the run which made us one dimensional and Barnes and Co peeled their ears back after that, life got alot easier for their pass rushers.

Pags got flat-out outcoached. It happens. The guy is a first year D-Coordinator, never had a position like this at the NFL level before, going up against one of the best offensive minds in football. Plus he's working with some young players in our secondary, like Cary and Jimmy, who were flat-out beat by veteran receivers like VJ and Floyd all day. They and he will get better. I'm not too worried about the defense at all. I'm worried about a certain OC who seems to love making the same mistakes over and over and over again.

You know, you're absolutely right, I hadn't thought about that until now. But he's basically a rookie at a defensive coordinator this year. So he's unquestionably an upgrade over Mattison, but he's still going to have those few slip-ups that he'll have to look back at the film for and iron out. Plus I'm sure the shortened training camp didn't help him prepare at all.

Pags did a great job setting up our defense to compete in the AFC , and the AFC North in particular. We simply don't run into many QB/receiver combos , along with pass protection that neutralizes our rush , that can torch you the way Rivers did in SD. And , let's face it , even with the perfect defensive schemes , we probably would have lost that game. The Chargers were just too dialed-in , on both sides of the ball. We could have made it a better game though.

In the playoffs/SB the chances of running into that same kind of offensive talent go way up , so the D that served us well during the regular season might put us at a disadvantage.

Pags knows what's up - he's seen it all during his time in the business - so I'm confident we won't see a repeat of the Chargers game. We might get beat again , but I'm sure we'll be showing some different looks on D if another team follows the Chargers blueprint.

Exactly, i was just telling a shocked buddy of mine (he was a Charger fan) because they all really expected to lose. I explained that our division isn't pass heavy, we are in a really offensively balanced division, a lot of old school football. The most pass happy offense i think we faced this year was the Texans, and they didn't have Andre Johnson, and they're the definition of a balanced offense lol.
