Cundiff Not Practicing

30 posts in this topic

This doesn't seem like a "day off" type of injury (though he could use one). Nothing on Twitter yet, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

So you'd draft a rookie kicker in place of a 7 year vet? Do you recall the amazingness of Steven Hauschka when we drafted him? Cause I do...

do we any backup kicker?

Sam Koch could probably kick the extra points, FGs...lets just say we shouldn't rely on them to win a game if Cundiff is out.

I agree that we should draft a replacement but disagree with letting him go. Plus normally , Teams dont draft Kickers, they pick them up undrafted. There are some exceptions though.

Make Matt an offer he cant refuse.

Heck no, Stover has been done, they put a fork in him yrs ago. Remember when it was a problem with him making 40yd field goals, i dont want that again. Oh and not many people know this, but Stover expects things when he goes places. He wanted free golf balls at my buddies golf course, they just looked at him like he was an Alien, lol

If Cindiff is hurt Matt would be a great fill in temporarily.

As far as your other comment goes as long as there are no golf balls on the field I dont see how that is an issue.

What year did we draft Hauschka? What round did he go?... -___-
Anyways.. Not every kicker is the same. Unlike most positions in the NFL, veteran kickers can be easily outperformed by a rookie kicker. If a rookie kicker comes in and outperforms the vet, I'd take him. Hauschka on the other hand came into the NFL as an UDFA for the Vikings and got cut. We picked him off waivers. (The year we carried 2 kickers, him and Stover). The reason why we let Stover go the following season was because Hauschka showed signs of potential when he nailed that 51 (I believe) yard FG in Houston and showed signs in practice. Hauschka never lived up to the potential the Ravens saw in him his rookie season but that doesn't mean another rookie would be the same.

Example: Dan Bailey, I'd take Dan over Billy anyday because even though Billy wasn't very accurate last season, his money came from the touchbacks he kicked last year; that's why the Ravens coughed up that big contract. The rules for kickoff have changed and IMO Billy is very replaceable at this point.

And it might not be better. Remember Hauschka?

Looks like they've brought in Graham just in case.
[/quote]
Yep. Shayne Graham is the insurance policy for Billy Cundiff this week.

Graham has kicked in Indy before. And he kicked for Cinci all those years. It would be interesting to see, if he starts playing well, would they use him over Billy at least in the Cinci game at the end of the season - especially if we need the win? Of course, I don't think Billy has ever missed a kick in Cini either.

just our of curiosity, can you only cut people on one year deals? no, thats not worded right, i mean, is it only people on one year deals that have no cap affect if they get cut? by that i mean could we not cut cundiff and then re sign him if he went through waivers and not have to take a cap hit? obviously someone would pick up through waivers, but if they didnt?

Only the guaranteed portions of NFL contracts matter. Meaning, if you have a $70M contract, but only $10M is guaranteed and that player was paid that amount year one, there would be no cap hit if released...as was the contract with D McNabb with the skins a few years back. People were amazed that it was something like $70M, but it had a low guarantee and I think that one even had multiple "outs". Not sure of Cundiffs contract, but yes, he would have a hit...not that we're cutting him anyway.

I'm not a big fan either. Hopefully all he will have to do if needed is kickoffs and extra points for 1 week.

You can release an injured player, but you still pay them during the injury. It just frees up a roster spot.
