Virginia Tech Shootings 12/8/11

22 posts in this topic

Unfortunately there has been another shooting here at Virginia Tech. I figured while I'm browsing the forums I might as well bring the topic to light here at Baltimoreravens.com.

Here are some links to the stories...

RIP to the two victims. Hope there are no more RIP's in need of issuing once they catch this guy.

One of my friends claims it's because there really isn't anything to do there outside of campus.

Now granted we don't know if the shooter was a VT student or not.

As a current student at Virginia Tech, dont be ignorant and jump to conclusions that the campus is not safe. The events in 2007 is what causes this incident to reach national media. Chances are, if 2007 never happened, you guys would never know about this.
There is also no evidence that the person who shot the cop was a student, so dont jump to conclusions that the students are mentally unstable.

I was outside when the incident happened, I didnt hear gun shots, just a really loud siren sounded and I knew something was wrong. I also received numerous txt message alerts and ran to my dorm room. The school handled it the situation very well.

I love it here, and am proud of this school. I will also not make conclusions on what happened until all the facts come out.

I have to agree with you there. Not only is VT a wonderful school, but it is also a very safe neighborhood and great community from my experiences visiting down there. College Park and the immediate surrounding areas just last year had something like 13 murders in 14 days and you never heard a peep.

This one isn't a shooting spree; it was a routine traffic stop that escalated when the driver shot a police officer, ran on foot, and then shot an innocent passer-by.

A shooting spree implies that someone carried a weapon with the intent of random mass murder in public. This was a guy who shot two people after he was pulled over, thinking the cop was pulling him over for something else he possibly did wrong.

My girlfriend's from Roanoke and she has been to that campus many times.. She says it's wonderful. I played lacrosse with a few of the guys from their team, they love it. It's juts unfortunate a few bad apples on campus (no necessarily students, since we don't know about this guy) can give a school a bad reputation. Sad honestly.

Apparently, it wasnt the driver. Apparently a random guy shot the cop. And the cop didnt pull anyone over, he was directing traffic.

Thats what I'm hearing, but it could be just rumors. Nothing is official until all the facts come out.

That's what I just read, too. The updated report came about two or three hours ago with an anonymous source from within the department, allegedly.

Apparently, the second person that was killed was actually the gunman himself who may have committed suicide.

I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

I also currently go to VT and i can assure anyone that VT has done everything possible to keep our campus safe. Never have I ever felt unsafe at any time, and i have never regretted for one second picking this amazing university a few years back (yes, over college park). This is no more than an act of random violence, and quite frankly these things could happen at any institution.

Its very tragic and a pretty scary experience here, but its always nice to see the support VT and all the students get from friends, family, etc.

All of our thoughts and prayers are with the police officer's family and friends.

I don't think that people shoot police officers out of boredom (aside from grand theft auto video games)

I've never been to Virginia Tech, but I'm not going to say it's not safe and that something there is cause people to go on shooting sprees. I go to University of Maryland College Park and with technology being what it is today, the schools are able to get alerts out quicker and more efficient. Honestly, I've received quite a few emails from my University of armed robberies happening all around the city of college park. But I'm sorry to hear this has happened, not matter what the situation.

And my thoughts and prayers also go out to the police officer and his family and friends.

That friend is not a strong thinker. Boredom? If that was true we'd all be guilty of mass murder at least one point in our life.

It's not boredom in the traditional sense. Rather, it's the absence of a deterrent or distraction from crime.

That's not to say that this wasn't just a random act of violence, of course. There are such incidents, even if random crimes occur much more infrequently than premeditated acts.

UPDATE: Apparently, the shooting might not have been random, as the shooter actually changed clothes in a nearby greenhouse after the incident. When he was spotted by a patrol, he then pulled the gun on himself. Police believe to know the gunman's identity but don't yet know of any links between the gunman and the slain officer. does anyone know if they ever caught the shooter?
Shooter killed himself. As stated in the link above and in various reports by several media outlets, the shooter killed the police officer, went into a nearby greenhouse to change, then was spotted less than 30 minutes later in a nearby parking lot by a patrolling deputy and then shot himself.

Ruled a murder-suicide. The motive is still pending investigation. There doesn't appear to be a known connection between the officer and the gunman.
