MERGED: Steelers Vs 49Ers

1,351 posts in this topic

After watching the Ravens dismantle the Steelers twice this year, and beating the 49ers on Thanksgiving, we've seen some of the best football come from our team. With that noted, we have also seen some of the best football we'll see played against us in those games. So, what's everyone's thoughts on their upcoming game? It'll be huge if Jim could pull off a win vs the Steelers, for us at least. It would give us so much room in the playoff seedings, and I'm pretty sure Houston can't win out with their QB issues. If both of those things come true, and we win out, we can get that #1 seed we've been drooling over.

Hopefully the Houston QB issue will prove true over time, the guy's playing great though...
49er's are very similar to us, and with that said, can easily make a winning gameplan against the Steelers by studying our film tapes... I'm sure John will be glad to help his brother that week.

Steelers are going to beat the 49ers. The only way I see it happening is if they finally realized how they need to play against a top defense like the Ravens or the Steelers and have been preparing for another huge defensive game. It would be a huge gain for us if they did beat Pitt. Maybe John can give Jim a few pointers on how to beat them because in the long run it would help both teams out.

The only thing you can beat the Stealers as tips from John is air it out, but Alex Smith is incompetent when game is on his shoulder....
John Harbaugh had better focus and have his full attention on getting the Ravens ready to play the Chargers that week and not worry about calling up his brother Jim and giving him tips on how to beat the Steelers. At the end of the day do people actually believe that any kind of advice that John would give his brother Jim would have any impact what so ever on the outcome of that game???

Jim will not benefit one way or the other from his brother..watching game films will provide him everything he needs.

If the Steelers beat the 49ers convincingly in their house then it could be an indication that they are really ready for the playoffs. But on the other hand, the 49ers schedule has put them with below average to average teams... except for the Ravens (who they lost to) and the Cowboys (average team). Therefore, I have suspicions that their record makes them look a little better than they really are. But its late season football and teams are playing a lot better (or should be) than previously.

im just worried that since the 49ers will clinch before that game (if they havent already) and really not try to beat the steelers, so they can rest their starters...

With the Saints on their tails, the 49ers can't afford to lose another game which would in all likelihood bump them out of a first round bye. They'll be playing Pittsburgh for respect and a first round bye.

I never said John would give him any advice, but they do talk every week. John also said himself that they'd talk more about schemes and game planning after they have played each other. These are things that were said and brought to the light by the media.. So I don't see why it's that exhausting to you that John might actually give Jim a better look at the film tape between the Ravens v Steelers game.

Honestly, no, I actually don't expect John to call Jim and be like "By the way gotta check..... and..... and take a look here...." No, but I do believe that if Jim talked to him about the Steelers this week, which I'm sure he would bring up, that John would answer most questions for Jim... Is that really that farfetched?

Jack Harbaugh is the key. He has been analyzing our film every week for 4 years now. Meaning he has seen every Steeler game during the Harbaugh era. Jack dissects the film of both of his son's teams and sends them pages upon pages of notes on tendencies and so forth. Jack knows the Steelers inside and out from game tape over the years and he could very easily relay what he has learned on to his younger son.

The Harbaugh clan is gunning for the Steelers.

Yep. I noticed that a few weeks ago. The 9ers are 10-2, the next in line in their division are the 5-2 Seahawks, 5-2 Cardinals, and 2-10 Rams. They've already clinched their division so their in the playoffs already. Their gonna beat Arizona this week. And their 2 games ahead of the Saints for homefield advantage in the playoffs, so they can afford to coast a lil bit in that area. So as of right now, they have "nothing" to gain by playing a hard game against the Steelers. Other than the fact that it's a Harb brother wanting to take out his big bro's rival for him... lol.

I think Jim in general is an extremely competitive man (more so than most coaches) . He wouldn't win it for his brother, he'd win it for himself.

I doubt the 49ers want to 'coast'. They want to prove that they can hang with the big boys come playoff time. Beating the Steelers would help them cement that #2 seed (home game) and prove that they are legit.

I think they are more amped up to play this game than you think.

Yeah, it's their last (regular season) home game and a Monday night showcase. To think they're going to skate through it is wishful thinking at best.

They do have a chip on their shoulder. They aren't going to be 'coasting' like a Green Bay team might. I did think the Steelers were going to win this game. Because the 9ers have issues with bringing down QBs who can shift out of the pocket. But with Big Ben's mobility questionable.

I think the 49ers have a great chance. They just need to find a way to muster up some offense. The Browns O-Line looked pretty good against the Steelers last night. That's good news for the 49ers.

I would say that's a good thing but considering how our defense shredded their offensive line for 9 sacks and how the Ravens & Steelers defense is similar, it may not be good for the 49ers. Though if Woodley can't play again, that will be a plus and if they can keep Ben in check, I think the 49ers could pull it off. They looked horrible against the Chiefs, and barely beat a 4 win team in the Browns and they are about to play a 10-2 49ers team who has a better running back in Frank Gore. Gore will be able to find holes that Hillis couldn't find and make his own holes for big yards, and their corners are still one of their weaknesses, so if the 49ers can get Crabtree to get some space, they certainly have a chance to win.

Update on Ben, from Adam Schefter's Facebook:

"Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, who will have an MRI on his ankle today, was spotted leaving the stadium last night in a walking boot."

If he could come back to play last night. He'll play again next week. Its going to be a whole drama throughout the week. He won't practice then he'll come riding out on a white horse to start against the 49ers.

Niner's only chance of winning hinges on how badly hurt Big Jen is.

I think it hinges on Frank Gore.

well the only game the 49ers can afford to lose is the steelers game they would lose to an AFC foe the rest are NFC so if they end up with the same record as the saints they would have the edge due to conference record but anyway, i think the 49ers defense is for real no offense to the steelers but they will sack ben unlike they did against Joe ravens have a better line i think that will be the difference if anything. Steelers can challenge their secondary probally better than we did.

While the Niners might coast a bit, they won't do it this game. It's before their home crowd vs a tough Steelers team. Jim is all about competition and respect. They'll bring everything they have to this contest.

Based on everything preliminary coming out today, playing that 2nd half might have taken its toll on Ben's high ankle sprain. I wouldn't bet the farm on him being able to play this game and I would bet the farm that he will be nowhere near 100% or even as effective as he was versus the Browns. The 49ers D is not the Browns.

You have a very callous attitude about your players. Just take a look at the thread regarding Ray Lewis' injury and what you just said to see how differently we think. High ankle sprains can be career ending dude if not treated properly. Of course players want to play. Lewis wanted to play every game he was held out. It is the coach's job to play the "parent" and make sure they don't do anything stupid. But you guys go right ahead and endanger your QB for a division title you aren't very likely to get anyway. We'll see how that works out for you when he can't go for the playoffs.

If Ben cant go and isnt ready to play next Monday against the Niners he wont go it's that simple. They have held him out before in a number of games throughout his career because he was not healthy enough to play. If he is unable to go next week and the doctors tell him and the Steelers it's not safe to play then he probably wont go. This division title is still well up for grabs too as well. So I wouldnt sit here and say it's very unlikely the Steelers still have a chance of getting it. If the Ravens are capable of <crapping> the bed against a team as bad as Jacksonville they can certainly do it again at least one more time which is all it will take against either the Chargers,Browns,or Bengals who are all much much better then the Jags...

The Steelers' coaches aren't taking chances with Ben or any of their other players. They know that these "injuries" are run of the mill , and they're all in on the gag to play them up as being more serious than they are. The Steelers have made this into an art form. Did you see Troy P on the bench , getting someone to yank on his arm as if he had a dislocated shoulder ? Pure theatrics. Watch the video of him as he comes off the field , rotating his arm 360 degrees to loosen it up. You don't do that with a dislocation.

Harbs has tried to get in on the action , too , but his players haven't helped like Ben , Troy and the other Steelers have on a weekly basis. Remember how ticked off Harbs got earlier in the season when players insisted on telling the press the truth about their injuries - that they were no big deal ? Now they're under strict orders to clam up.

Ben and Troy both have " symptoms resembling those associated with fake injuries " , so you can fully expect to see them play , at full capacity , against the 49ers , no matter what you hear to the contrary over the next week.

The 49ers are what I would say is an up in coming team, they need some better talent in the skilled positions. I like the team but don't think they'll go deep in the playoffs this year, I'm interested to see them after a good draft or two.
With that said & like others have said: I don't see them beating the Steelers unless they get a couple turnovers that lead to points.

I honestly think the 49ers will want it more because they have not really had a signature win this year unless you count the cowboys or Bengals and to get this kind of win will give them the confidence to beat anyone
