Grubbs Looked Like He's Playing For A New Contract!

43 posts in this topic

Protect Flacco and few QB's are better. The offensive line's importance to this team and every team cannot be understated and Grubbs proved his significance on our O-line with his absence.

We saw what happened to the O-line without Grubbs, we need him and Yanda. However if some team wants to spend all their money for Grubbs I say let him go play where he is getting paid more, which is usually what they want.

Ozzie, Eric, and the rest of the front office have a plan. How often do our own players leave via free agency, especially guys on the defensive side of the ball, and we do okay? Have we been outside of the top five defenses in the NFL since 2008? After losing Bart Scott, Jim Leonard, AD, etc? If Grubbs wants to stay and is willing to take market value, he will - if not, he'll go somewhere else. As important as Grubbs is, Rice and Flacco are much more important. We can find another guard, but to find another running-back as skilled as Rice or another quarterback as good as Flacco (especially when we spend 12 years before we found Flacco) is much harder. A guy like David DeCastro out of Stanford would probably be there if we needed him. But left tackle is much more important, in my opinion. Yes Grubbs makes the whole line better, and I'd love for him to stay, but the bottom line is we have to be concerned with more important pieces, like our franchise RB and QB.

How can you even say that. Yeah Yanda gets all the recognition from the analysts because of his run blocking, but Grubbs is the better overall guard in both pass protection and run blocking.

Yanda gets recognition because he's the best guard in the NFL right now.

Grubbs is an excellent player and I don't want him to walk. Bringing a new Center along'll be much easier if he's playing in between Grubbs and Yanda having learned from Birk. I'd much rather just be looking for a young Center to groom and a Left Tackle than having to replace the entire left side of the line.

imo, rice is a bit more important, but true, his production will fall without grubbs.
i think...
McKinney, Gurode, (possibly Konz), Yanda, Oher looks pretty good for next season.
Unless Reid decides to elevate and come into the mix.

Jah Reid is going to need two or three years IMO, he needs to hit the weight room.

I think when you see the players and coaches voting for All-Pro , you'll find that those closest to the action have a different view.

Here's an analysis by PFF after the Browns game , with a comment about Yanda :

When the Ravens re-signed guard Marshal Yanda (+4.0) in the offseason I thought they’d got a relatively good deal contract wise. After all, Yanda was coming off a year where he showed he could excel at right tackle as well after earning mid season All Pro recognition from Peter King. Looking back on that deal now though? The Ravens got an absolute bargain with the Raven our top ranked RG in the league. He’s reached that level now where perfect games in pass protection, like he had on Sunday are the norm. But he also reminded us of how good he can be in the run game with his highest graded performance (+2.6) of the season in that regard. The best example of this came on 1st-and-10 with 3:16 left in the first quarter. The line of scrimmage was the 40 yard line and by the time Rice had crossed it, Yanda had pushed rookie defensive tackle Phil Taylor (-0.2) back four yards, taking him out of the play completely."

This is not to minimize the importance of Grubbs to the Ravens - I think it would be a disaster to let him slip away. Good O-linemen are not an abundant commodity , and particularly so among current Ravens backups. I'd feel better about plugging in A.Allen for Rice than I would about any of the possible replacements for Grubbs. If it comes down to it , I think the Ravens should sign Grubbs over Rice , but I really hope it doesn't get to that point.

Grubbs has definitely been earning his keep so far this year. I vaguely remember some talk about the projected status for the 2012 season and the Ravens weren't too bad in that category. Rice is going to be the top priority, but he'll get the franchise tag, which puts Grubbs next up. As always, trust in Ozzy to get the job done. A few years ago we let Jason Brown go to St. Louis, but we picked up Birk to replace him. So if he lets Grubbs go, he'll find someone suitable to replace him.

We could be worse off though, we could be the Steelers. They're projected to be over the salary cap with only 36 players signed and that doesn't include Troy Polamalu and Mike Wallace, both of whom have contracts expiring. The Steelers are looking like they're going to have to seriously purge in the off-season... and that's on top of them already purging this last off-season too.

I could be mistaken but Polamalu got a deal at the beginning of the season. They grossly overpaid him which is probably causing some of their cap woes.

I agree. RBs are a dime a dozen, All Pro caliber lineman are not.

I am in no way devaluing Rice, he's a top 5 back in the league. But if I had a gun to my head and was only allowed to have one, I'd have to choose Grubbs.

If this topic does ever affected Grubbs' contract in any form of message to our FO and Ozzie, I want to exclaim lets work out the numbers and lock up Grubbs for a long time.

With Grubbs and Yanda anchoring both left and right side of the Oline, our passing and running game will be elite in a very long time......even with Cam under helm......
