NFL Power Rankings

There's just too much wrong with that to even begin criticizing. I just felt insulted when he claimed the 49ers are better than us because of defense... And when he used franchise quarterback in quotation marks, as if Joe isn't the answer at QB because he didn't ball out against the 1# pass D in a tropical storm.

Plus, he didn't even need to. The coaching staff knew Flacco didn't need to pass for 350 to win the game, they knew if we got 150+ on the ground we'd win. And we did. All these experts think its a passing league, but the Ravens do what they need to do to win, run the ball.

so this week nfl.com ranked the ravens 6th! after beating the 49ers you would think that they would get some credit. and the worst part about it is that both the 49ers and steelers are ahead of them. i know it doesnt really matter, but i hate that the steelers are everyones "safe pick"

ATTENTION: Members of The Flock.

I encourage you all to stay off of NFL.com because they cannot report objectively. One and many examples of this is their power rankings. They cannot put aside their biases toward NFL teams when reporting. One good alternative site is Profootballtalk.com. ...If you have other alternative NFL sites, let us all know.

Why even bohter with power rankings? THEY ARE MEANINGLESS. Let the team prove themselves, and if we go to the SB, then all these so called annalysts will get caught with their foot in their mouth. I fail to understand why people even read power rankings anymore...

I honestly agree...to an extent. Example...steelers losses are to much better teams than our losses, so i understand it in a way since we have the same record, still doesnt sound right but i understand it. but after reading that article i do have one thing to say about what he said about ripping joe for not throwing for crazy yardage: The patriots dont get ripped for not having a rb,,,but they get all the praise of having a top qb, but we get no praise for having a top rb and to me, with our style of play, thats far more important. we can take the ball out of a brady, manning, rodgers hands by running the ball and running out the clock and with your defense,,,its just our strengths. Sorry my post is all over the place...at work...going to go launch a jet..later

Power rankings are just for fun really. They have no bearing on who goes to the playoffs or who wins the SB. And I don't think that NFL.com is biased due to some hatred of the Ravens, they show bias based upon which team draws the most attention, that being the Steelers, the Patriots, this year- Green Bay, and the Broncos because of Tebow being so popular. They are a business looking to make money. They probably also realize that the easiest way to draw Ravens fans is to disrespect the team.

This is the site I like to check for the power ratings :

http://www.boltsfromtheblue.com/section/nfl-power-rankings

They don't have a post up for this week yet , but you can see what they do from last week's post. They look around the web at various subjective ratings ( i.e. those based on "expert" personal opinions ) and objective ratings ( based on a purely statistical approach ) and then average these together to get a "Composite Average" that you'll find in one of the last charts.

I don't pay much attention to the std. dev. charts , which are only there to show how much variation exists between the measures in any given week.

Last week the composite figure had the Packers solidly at #1 , with the Ravens second , but closely followed by the Texans , Patriots , Steelers , 49ers , and Saints. After that group , there's a big drop down to the next team , the Bears.

That composite ranking seems to me a pretty fair reflection of the talent in the league , or at least a best-guess at this point in the season. The Packers in a league of their own , followed by six quality teams that are hard to separate from each other , followed by everyone else.

I'm kinda split on NFL.com's power rankings. Power rankings don't work like what most people think (i.e. this team beat this team therefore they should be higher). That said I think 6 is too low. Mine would look like this:

1. Packers
2. Saints
3. Ravens
4. 49ers
5. Steelers
6. Patriots

Just because Team A beat Team B twice doesn't mean they are better. Ok really, lol, he obviously has a bias and no way is San Fran better with that terrible offense.

At least ESPN has us at #2, can't complain there.

Oh and he comments on the fact that Joe didn't do much, um yea, when your team rushes for 290 yrds and the other team can't stop it why would you start passing. I guarantee if Pitt had rushed for that many yrds and Ben threw for 150 he would have nothing bad to say there.

as much as this pains me to say....that's because the steelers have "proven" themselves over the years to be a very reliable and "consistent" team that plays extremely hard and well in the month of december. remember...not too long ago they swept the Ravens by beating them 3xs (twice in the regular season and once in the playoffs) one year. the Ravens have beat them 2xs this season. but, can they do it a 3rd time in the playoffs if necessary? who knows? luck, referee's bad calls against their opponents...whatever you want to call it....the steelers just seem to make play after play offensively. can the Ravens offense do the same? no secret there! our offense stalls at times and then greatly struggles with scoring TDs in the redzone...smh! and the Ravens lost 3 games to 3 teams that they "should've" beat (titans, jaguars, seahawks) even the chargers (who lost 6 games in a row....whom the Ravens must fly to on the west coast to play in 2 weeks) just beat the jags last night...lol so, i can see why the steelers are a "safe pick" for a lot of people in comparison to the Ravens.

Ravens...prove everyone wrong and win the rest of your games! please!

Do you guys actually believe that there is some kind of a "no respect for the Ravens" conspiracy out there? I really don't get the paranoia.
It's not a conspiracy, per say, it's more of a subconscious belief that because the Patriots and Steelers have won Super Bowls with Brady and Roethlisberger and those QBs are still with those teams, that makes them the best teams in the AFC. It doesn't hurt that those two teams are also the most popular teams in the NFL.

Part of it, I suspect, is business. They know that the Pats and Steelers are really popular, so there's a vested interest in being biased towards them a little bit, since that will appease more fans to slurp those teams than it would by slurping the Ravens. Again, I suspect this is more on a subconscious level than a conscious level.

Elliot Harrison is a Raven hater and a Steelers fan. Because of his ridiculous power rankings and the way the NFL network (and web site) are so Steeler dizzy, many, many of the people I know are simply tunning them out.

Now they are (me too) looking to sites like CSM for information almost exclusively.

Some are talking of canceling their NFL network subscription. I am not quite there yet, once in a while they do do some interesting shows.

but...... I am also becoming tired of the "I love the Steelers" club that dominates each show.

If they wanted to see a guy who is honest and fair across the board, they should watch how Rich Eisen does it. The guy is a pro.

GO RAVENS!

It's easy to forget that Flacco made his normal game losing mistake in that final drive of game two. He threw a pick right into Larry Foote's hands but Foote dropped the ball and bailed Flacco and the Ravens out....

IDK, for one thing, until a QB/team wins a SB it is reasonable for a commentator to question whether they can. But personally, I see the Ravens getting a lot of love on ESPN, I almost think you have to be in the "they disrespect us" mode to miss it. The Ravens D is definitely respected, I think people still have some doubts about Flacco's ability to take a team to the promised land. Again, not a completely whacked out question to have. Just today on ESPN I heard Ravens called, "the most complete team in the AFC."

No doubt....AFCN is tight right now, but regardless, Ravens are 1 game up with 4 to play. Should make for an interesting final 1/4 of the regular season. Still amazed both Balt/Pitt games were wrapped up by week 9.

Granted...Ravens definitely control their own destiny. Gonna be a very fun four weeks of football viewing followed by some cardiac incident inducing play-offs. Of course, if Woodley, Harrison and Troy are all healthy and on the field for the stretch run...thats not exactly the same defense!

Hah yeah we're all having fun here. But really, we'll see you in the playoffs. Still a lot of changes that will happen before that time for both teams.
