Already Topped Last Year's Sack Total...

42 posts in this topic

At the start if the season I made two bets with my friend, 1 that the Ravens would finish higher than the Giants in sacks and the 2nd being the Giants wouldn't finish first in sacks. Now I know the season isn't finished but tonight they logged a total of 0 on Brees. This is less about the bet(though it was a sucker bet on his part) and more about the defense getting back to its aggressive nature.

Soon as Mattision left and I assumed we would do away with most of the 3 man rushes. As with everyone else when I heard Pagano say he wanted to attack and was digging in the crates for blitzs packages I had flashes of 06(last time the defense was for he most part healthy). I knew what the guys were capable of and even last year mentioned the d looked different. They didn't look like they were having fun and seemed there fangs had been filed but Pags has "RELEASED THE KRAKEN". I told my friend though the Ravens were a top defense this year he would notice a change and it seems everyone around the league is taking note. It's good to see the group back where it belongs. Also good to see who is left on the schedule cause with the 7 or 8 sack lead on the Giants and teams we have left to play I should win my bet.

Also, Ravens currently lead the league with 38 sacks already 11 more than last seasons total. Suggs is 2nd I think in the AFC and 5th or 6th overall. He should be breaking his streak of missing the pro bowl after a pro bowl season. Don't forget to vote, though I don't think we'll get to see any of our guys in that game if things go as planned.

yeah, Mattison really had a negative effect on the defense. This team has always been about aggressive punch you in the mouth defense and Mattison was too soft.

Yeah, I kept blaming our defensive inconsistencies on Mattison not having the right personnel, but Pagano has really shown me that changing a coordinator and scheme can have a big impact on a unit's performance. Makes you wonder if other coordinator changes should be made.

Yep and he should have back to back double digit sacks which also would end that streak. Let's go!!! #55BSHU I've pro bowl voted continuously the past two weeks lol.

Oh, I don't think the pro bowl exemption applies anymore.... that was because the pro bowl was before the super bowl. It's back to its normal time after the SB in Hawaii where it belongs.

I knew it was coaching. It was basically the same personnel from 08 and the 08 squad hit hard by the injury bug. They were still putting up great numbers and solid performances cause players were out in the best position for that player to succeed, you know, good coaching. The defense would defend Mattison but it didn't seem like they really believed in his scheme. Soon as Pagano was named DC I noticed a change in the players demeanors.

Pags is doing a damn fine job, Its a crime we had to "deal" with Mattison for 2 seasons.....

It is also cool that our sacks are spread around the players, showing that Pags is getting everyone involved up there but look:
Suggs: 9
Haloti: 5
Kruger: 4.5 (This is just awesome)
McPhee: 4 (He's going to be a monster)
Redding: 3.5
JJ: 2.5
And a lot of other guys have 2 or 1. Keep up the pressure I think we are due for a lot of sacks towards the end of our season.

And also the fact that our sacks are all spread out Suggs(9), Ngata(5), Kruger(4.5), and McPhee(4). These are just some but a ton of our defensive players have been utilized to get to the QB this year and its really working.

Great breakdown, but one other thing i love:
Pollard - 2
Reed - 1
Zibi - 1
Webb - 1
Cary Williams - if he breaks down against Dalton he would have 1

I love that pagano is bringing these guys from the secondary because it really shows his scheme and that teams honestly have no idea who is coming on any given play. Even more is that guys like redding and kruger are having career years and that everyone isnt just getting sacks, but the pressures we've been getting on quarterbacks has been outstanding. I can live with 2-3 sacks a game but we absolutely cannot stop getting pressures on quarterbacks because no secondary is good enough to cover for 7 seconds

It isn't just Pagano replacing Mattison, that is a big part of it though. The personnel is a big reason as well. It seems every snap Kruger and Mcphee play they get at the quarterback. Of course if Mattison was still here these guys probably wouldn't be getting a shot.

The most encouraging thing is that we can get coverage sacks. Our secondary is strong enough to cover the receivers which gives our playmakers on our d line to have time to get to the qb. It was especially evident in the 49ers game. Our defense is elite. Period. Maybe even the best in the league, but definitely at least in the top 3.

Our sack total speaks volumes on how Mattison was as a coach, and how much better Pagano is.

Not only have we already eclipsed last years total but we also managed to chalk up a third of it in the SF game alone. We've had some truly outstanding defensive performances this season (vs Pit, vs NYJ, vs SF). Pagano's been awesome to say the least.

I wonder if anyone keeps track of sacks per defensive snap played by individual players. McPhee has to be near the top of that list. Kruger would be up there too.

When QBs see those guys on the field , they think " Oh no. Please , OC , send me a running play. "

Profootball focus records that. They call it pass rush efficiency I think. Fun fact: One of the most efficient passrushers from last year? Ostracized olb from the Ravens, Antwan Barnes. hooray...

Great. John Clayton was just speculating on ESPN about Pagano (among others) as a possible replacement for Del Rio. I was hoping to get another season before his name starts popping up. As this thread is saying, he's doing a job.

I never understood trading him for only a 7th rounder. He could have been very valuable last season. He was one of the lbs who I felt deserved more time but might have had altercations with the staff.

Well they can't have him! They're welcome to another coordinator in Baltimore after this season though.

Pagano is the man. I love the exotic blitzes returning. Like against SF when we overloaded one side and dropped back into coverage, Redding stepped right past the Guard on the other side and sacked Smith. The main reason why those blitzes work so well is because it forces the O-Line/QB to communicate and figure out who is picking up who. When you have the crowd noise (at home it's more effective) it can be tough for the O-Line to not have a mix up, especially when you have guys dropping into coverage and disguised blitzers.

hope we can find a better O.C knows how to use this offense.....

Funny thing is we were all complaining about Cam so much last season, that no one really took the time to call for Mattison to go. Mattison was solid, but Pagano really has shown what our defense is capable of. Mattison leaving really turned out well. Now if only we could get Cam to do the same thing...
