[Blogs] Webb Stands Up To The Test

76 posts in this topic

After notching an interception to close out the first half, Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb sat on the ground with his arms out to his side, as if asking why the 49ers would test him like that.

The 49ers took two deep shots against the Ravens the whole game.

One was completed against Cary Williams for what would have been a 75-yard touchdown to Ted Ginn Jr., before it was wiped out by a penalty. The other was the 35-yard bomb at Webb that got picked.

Webb is showing more and more that he isn’t a cornerback to be trifled with.

The third-year cornerback now has four interceptions on the season and two in as many contests. Webb is second on the Ravens with 56 tackles and has a team-high 14 pass deflections.

While his diving interception against the Bengals last Sunday was an acrobatic feat, Thursday’s against San Francisco was textbook.

The 5-foot-10 Webb was giving up five inches to 49ers wide receiver Braylon Edwards on the play. As quarterback Alex Smith said after the game, he liked his one-on-one matchup.

Smith’s throw was a bit inside instead of outside. Webb was tracking the ball for a while in the air, and boxed out Edwards with his body before leaping to make the pick in the end zone.

Considering the 49ers had a first-and-10 from the 35 and time to move further, Webb’s interception saved a touchdown at worst and a likely field goal at best.

“I mean, it was simple. They tried to big boy me, you know, put a tall guy [against me],” Webb said. “And I played it well. But he had to get the ball out right then, so it made it easy on me.”

“Webb made a good play. That happens,” 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said.

Webb gave much credit for the secondary’s performance to the front seven, which logged nine sacks. A week after Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw for 373 yards against it, Baltimore held Smith to just 140 passing yards and 15 completions.

With increased pressure on Smith, it forced him to get the ball out faster and didn’t give as much time for routes to develop. Thus, the defensive backs had to cover less and could make more plays on the ball.

“If the front seven keeps playing the way they played, then you’ll see more games like this,” Webb said.

But pressure or not, more games like the one against San Francisco continue to pile up for Webb.

I have liked Webb from day one, there was something about him that stood out in my eyes. Last year I said he was my dark horse of the team, he got the least respect from the fans and his team mates, look at him now!!!

I am thrilled beyond words at the emergence of Ladarius Webb as a future permanent fixture in our Defense!

Better than ex-Raven Duane Starks due to his desire to hit (hard) and ability to cover, he'll be a perfect Corner should the highly-touted Jimmy Smith emerge as the "shut-down" corner we desire!

He reminds me of the Ol School cornerbacks like Lester Hayes who could cover and could lay a lick on a Receiver!

Gee, I did find the words!

I love your quote "Win, lose or tie till I die". But a little twist on it.
Win, lose or tie till I die the Ravens win fly.

Webb is playing out of his mind this year. Its hard for me to say it because Ed Reed is my favorite player on the entire team, but he is the MVP of the Secondary by far this year

L Webb is playing "lights out" for the Ravens this year! He is a one man wrecking machine and excelling at every position he is playing. If this isn't Player of the Year for the Ravens so far, I don't know what is!!

Webb was really great his first year and highly underrated. He played off the ball a little more, but was a sure tackler. Last year he was a little off. Not sure if it was his injury or just that he got a little cocky. He tried to play a lot tighter coverage on the dbs but would get burned more. This year he seems like he is adjusting and able to play tight coverage without getting burned. This guy is going to continue to get better and is a potential Ed Reed replacement once number 20 decides he's ready to go. Webb is solid. In preseason he looked like garbage, but based on the season he is extremely solid.

I am so surprised at the improvement of our secondary from last year with many of the same faces (and a few additions). Webb and Williams are an excellent tandem. Smith and Carr are great nickel/dime options. Reed is always amazing, but Pollard has been even more of a shock to me than any of the others.

I have to think other teams are envious of our depth.

Webb is beasting....his pick vs Cincy was a thing of beauty. He can blitz well, stop the run well....def voting for him to the pro bowl. Jimmy take notice on how a playmaker plays.

its amazing what happens to players when they go to great coaches. Pollard could always tackle but the report on him was he couldnt cover or really help out in certain ways. All the games ive watched since he took over as a starter have showed him in coverage, blitzing, and blowing up plays. This guys the real deal and at only 26 hopefully our SS for the future

Webb reminds me, at Corner, of the 2nd or 3rd year Edward Reed in his range and zest to make plays! Reed has become more the "supervisor" than the "catalyst" at Safety,....

Webb, on the other hand, is seemingly doing much more at Corner than we've usually seen a corner do since Rex left!

Chuck Pagano has given Webb more responsibility (than Mattison did) in the QB-pressure and run-stoppage game and Ladarius is rising to the challenge!

Yea if anybody is losing there starting job to Jimmy it is Cary. I wouldn't put anybody in for Webb. Webb knows how to return well too. It is really good knowing that each side of the field we have a defensive back that can completely change a game at any moment. Webbs pick 6 of Sanchez was great. I think Fox and Carr need to hand their salary over to the man earning it. Webb and Jimmy will be the best corner tandem in the league for years to come. Lock him up long term Oz!

I enjoy listening to Suggs! I dont think he should change at all @RavenK3n. We are underdogs and he talks that way. Suggs brings the chemistry up. The way he talks about the game is fun and we all know Suggs is a laid back dude unless ur trying to [profanity deleted] on our team then he's going to say whatever he pleases. On another note Webb is a beast back there and he is showing everyone including some raven fans that you dont have to be 6'0 plus to be a elite CB.

Ravenskill, I'll go along with that!

I think that the by-product of Webb's ascension as an everyday Corner is the eminent off-season release of Foxwood and good riddance!

Now, in Cary Williams' defense, he only had three weeks to ready himself for the "Raven Way" of defense and has acquitted himself fairly well.

He's better and more aggressive than Carr but we'll see how all this shakes out with which, him or Carr is more "teachable", more apt to improve!

I'm just sayin'
