MERGED: Tiebreaker With New England - #1 Seed

176 posts in this topic

Has anyone figured out how the tiebreaker with New England would work if we both win out? The only other teams in the AFC with 3 losses are the Steelers and Texans and we have the head to head with them. But I don't know about New England. Philly on Sunday may be the last team with a real chance to beat them.I would hate to lose the #1 seed because of the 3rd or 4th tiebreaker.

If we both win out we will have the same record, same conference record, divisional record doesn't matter when it's not between divisional teams. So the next would be record vs. common opponents. We both beat the Jets but the Pats lost to the Steelers giving us the tie-breaker.

Thanks. Ironic isn't it that the game I'm sure we all were rooting hard for the Patriots to win will actually benefit us in a big way that they lost.

We need to win and hope that someone knocks the Steelers out of contention. I think we can beat the Patriots again like we did before in the playoffs. None of the teams in contention scare me this year as long as our defense puts pressure on the QB.

We have the tiebreaker with the Steelers so as long as we win out it doesn't matter what the Squealers do.

I don't think the Steelers will lose again unless it is to the 49ers but after seeing how we handled them I think the Steelers will have no issue with them. As long as we win the rest of our games we will be able to beat the Pats because look what the Steelers did. Defense always wins over offense (unless you're the Green Bay Packers but I would be interested to see what would happen if they played us or the Steelers)

We have the tiebreaker over the Patriots, which is GREAT! I been messing with ESPN's Playoff Machine and I tested that scenario and if we both end up 13-3, the Ravens would be the # 1 Seed which means if the Patriots and Ravens meet in the AFC Title Game they would come to Baltimore. Plus if we are the # 1 Seed, we play the lowest seed remaining from the Wild Card and considering that currently the Steelers would be the 5th Seed and the Bengals the 6th Seed we would most likely play the Steelers in the Divisional Round unless they lose in the wild card round then we would most likely see the Bengals but if they both lose, we would play the 4th seed while the Pats play the 3rd Seed.

That's not even the case; the Titans, Jacksonville, Seattle, and Houston will have objection for this.....

I don't think getting the 2nd seed will make a difference. NE keeps getting bounced in the playoffs and I'd expect them to lose in the divisional round. Since the only time we'd have to play an away game is if both NE and us are in the conference game, we could still likely have 3 home games with the 2nd seed. The only change is the teams we play.

If we have the 2nd seed, we play the higher seed. That's good because the biggest threat is Pittsburgh and they're at #5 right now.

You cannot predict how one team will do based on what another team did. The 49ers will have more time to prepare for the Steelers and play them at home. Just because the Steelers beat the Patriots does not mean we will handle them. These arguments are wishful thinking.

This team hasn't really shown me the consistency to win out from here.

I can only hope those pitful losses will keep them focused. If nothing else, we might have to win out just to win the division.

This^^^^^^! I don't know why people use this logic which is neva how it is and neva how its been. Just b/c Team A beat Team B and Team C has a similar team to team A doesn't mean Team C wll beat Team B also if they were to play them. Its not like we blew the doors off the Niners, one or two plays ( Ginn play ) and the game could have been completely different and if we played away, it possibly could have been a different game. Our O-line cam to play and I can't say the same about the Steelers when they face the Niners b/c the biggest difference maker was in the trenches on both sides of the ball and our team dominated on both sides and that was the key.

I'm actually taking the Niners to win against the Steelers and I will be betting a few of my friends on this.

You think having the #1 overall seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs isn't a big deal? Are you serious?

We may have beaten New England in Foxborough once before but that is historically a very difficult place to play on the road and in case you haven't been paying attention we haven't exactly been playing that well on the road this year.

Yep and Pittsburgh would definitely make sure to make the Patriots go one and done again! Which means we could see them in the AFC Championship game.

After going through it a few times (and I could be wrong, all those tie-breakers make my head swim) I do believe it will come down to strength of victory if we both win out. As of right now, we hold that tie-breaker but we'll have to start putting together some decisive wins to keep it.

Let's just say if we win out and NE wins out and we are tied then that will be a good problem to have. Winning out from here is really our only shot at a home play-off game at this rate.

Also lets not count the chickens before they hatch, once we clinch the play-offs then we can worry about who we play, and where. Last of all, let's hope that if we see the PIT again that it's our turn to crush their super bowl hopes and dreams.

I can't imagine how nice it would be to have a week rest and a home game in the playoffs. Its been a while. I think if we had those things, its lights out.

But there really is no room for error. 1 loss can easily put us 3rd.

The strength of victory tie-break is not based on margins of victory , only on the won-loss percentage of your opponents. It's the same with strength of schedule , which falls next in line behind SOV in the tie-breaking procedure. Only if the tie is not broken by those measures do they look to points scored /points allowed rankings , first in-conference , then overall.

Our SOV margin will probably hold up if we win out , but if enough of our opponents - past and future - go on a big losing binge , it could collapse.

That means we MUST beat the Colts and Chargers because assuming they beat the Colts, we would be in danger of allowing them to tie or in worst case scenario beat us in common opponents if the Chargers and or Colts (somehow) beat us. They already beat the Chargers. If we win out, we get the tiebreaker and home field advantage, but if we each go 12-4, there are many possibilities.

i am confused. why is it if the pats win on monday they have afc number 1 seed. we will have same record, better division record, better home record etc... is it becuase they beat one of the teams we lost to, or am i just overlooking something.
