Jimmy Smith Should Start Next Week Vs Cle

63 posts in this topic

Regardless of who starts between cary williams and jimmy smith, both of these guys play like theyre 5 foot 10 sometimes. I thought at 6 1 and 6 2 these guys were supposed to be up on their men pressing and playing solid bump and run coverage. I dont think i saw either of these guys pressing the wide receivers more then 5 times, if at all. They could be playing off to not give up big plays and because of their inexperience, but i remember especially in the preseason watching jimmy guarding one of the best and most physical receivers in the league in Dwane Bowe and Jimmy didnt give him an inch. I wanna see our secondary with the exception of reed, pollard, and webb start to play with that agressiveness the rest of this defense is playing with.

My opinion would be leave things as they are, but shuffle The Jimmy in more often (which we've seen over the 2-3 games). On a somewhat related topic, WEBB IS NASTY!!!!

Let me just say we would be in a world of hurt without Cary. He has stepped up big time for us since week 1 with all our injuries. That said Jimmy is the better player. I don't think there is any doubt about that. The only difference right now is experience but I think Jimmy has narrowed that gap in recent weeks.

Webb is too much of a playmaker to take off the field so someone is the odd man out. Regardless who starts I am thrilled with our top 3 CB's.

On a side note did anyone notice that Chris Carr was inactive on Thanksgiving? He has been a huge disappointment this season. I think we may cut him and go with Danny Gorrer who was active in his place last night.

if he could defend against the deep ball he'd be great

When the ravens gave up the pass for a TD, Cary was the only one to get his hands on the receiver.
Ed was underneath the receiver, once again, trying to catch up and was not in a position to help.

The ravens defense has played great or even better without Ray Lewis on the field. The last 2 games against good teams the ravens defense stepped it up. The younger players are more athletic and faster than lewis in his old age.

The same can be said for Ed Reed. Except the ravens don't have a great backup safety.

Cary's fine. Sure, he's been getting beat on the deep ball, but you have to take into consideration that it was Ted Ginn that beat him deep. Sure, Ted Ginn is a bad WR, but he is as fast as anyone in this league, and I don't think you guys realize that. CB's are gonna give up some passes, it happens. Be realistic. As long as we remain in the Top 10 pass defense I have no concerns. We are #3 against the pass, and I'm positive Cary has some impact on that.

Webb is a monster. Love him. Love watching him play. He's a baller.

I do want to see more of Jimmy though. But, I find it ironic how it was just last week Jimmy allowed a deep pass for a TD, but we want to start him over Cary, because Cary allowed a deep ball for a possible TD. How very ironic........................ Come on now...

Why start Jimmy now?

He is a rookie, we don't need to rush the guy. Let him learn the game and take off the pressure on him. Cary Williams is doing a great job, the problem is he is a CB and they get beat from time to time. Jimmy got beat against the Bengals and that's normal in those pass happy league days.

How many times Cary let the receiver wide open? Not that much, I really don't remember he doing it that many times. Even when the receiver get the ball on him, he is usually close to the guy and playing good coverage.

I don't even see how guys compare his game with Cromartie. The Jets guy tries to be a playmaker and many times lose the coverage. Cary is pretty much the opossite of that.

Jimmy time will come, but don't need to rush the guy. Let him learn the NFL offenses and everything.

Cary is not a speedster, but he is a very good cover corner and when working a fast receiver, Ed Reed should put himself in position to help out overtop to prevent the big pass play.. Every time the ravens have given up a big pass play, Ed Reed was nowhere to be found.

Ed Reeds decision making is hurting the Ravens defense.
It used to be that Ed was fast and athletic enough to take chances but that is no longer the case. Ed is older and slower and the same plays he made 10 years ago, he cannot make today. Ed needs to stay in position on the field to help his team mates instead of trying to grab the limelight with showoff antics.

Before we start bashing Cary, lets keep in mind he was apart of that starting lineup since the start of the season and has helped us get to 8-3. I think Cary honestly is a upgrade compared to having fox or carr at that spot, unless you forgot about last year. And yes, he did get beat deep, just like Jimmy did last week, so having that over his head is a mute point. If you have ever played football in your life you will know, any corner can get beat, its just if it becomes consistent, and compared to carr, foxx, and washington from last year, I think he is doing better than any of them. I agree in the idea of switching jimmy in as back up cb for now until we know he ready but saying that cary is not getting it done is just bad facts. The ravens got 9 sacks last night, and not just because we got to the QB quickly either. some of those were COVERAGE sacks(definition: a sacked caused by a QB not being able to find a open man because of great DB coverage, and due to this, eventually gets brought down). If cary was not doing his job, it would not have taken long for the other teams QB to find them and pick them apart, causing the defense to have to pull back into coverage, causing Smith to get more time to get the ball off, resulting in yards and points. I would love to see Cary and Jimmy on the field together and have cary and webb switch time at slot, honestly, I would also like to see Chykie out there too because I think he may have some good nickel and dime potential but that may have to wait until next year.

Must you bash Reed EVERY post? He has been in position a lot. Not his fault one of the fastest WR in the league burnt one of our corners that struggles against the deep ball.

I dont know why Cary was on Ginn. He shouldof never been in the position to be beat. He should have been on Edwards, Smith should be on Crabtree and Webb on Ginn

Cary isn't a good corner, why is everyone still buying into that? he's average at best, maybe the substandard play in recent years has lowered expectations.

Cary plays so far off the receiver gets an easy 8 yards as soon as he catches the ball. Reminds me of Frank Walker and C-Mac towards the end of his career.
Would not mind seeing Cary's playing time more limited. ;)

I'll forsee Jimmy will take over #2 starting CB soon, but not now. He needs to learn the defense scheme and experience in order to take over starting job. Cary got beat sometimes but he's right now better Carr or Foxworth in that position.

Cary is good in nickle packages; I think we need to use Gorrier more.

I was watching a video on the Ravens app with Ladarius Webb speaking on Jimmy Smith and he spoke very highly of him even saying (paraphrasing) he'd be a consistent pro bowler once he learns the ropes of the game; I thought that spoke volumes coming from him. With just how far Webb has come along (still hasn't given up a TD this year) and The Jimmy gaining more experience we could have two potential shutdown corners in the defense starting.

Imagine having a combo of starting CBs like C-Mac and Rolle in '06 but instead it's Webb and Smith who are both still very young as our future corners.

You guys are thinking unrealistically. No one ever said Cary was Revis or Deion and outside of that, every CB in the league has passes completed on them, including Webb who everyone feel is playing great, including me. You judge a CB by his consistency and how he covered a particular route regardless of if its caught or not. To expect these guys to neva get beat deep or neva have a pass caught on them is insane, lol.

I heard someone speak about Jimmy and at the end when the WR dropped the ball when Jimmy was covering him. For that situation, Jimmy played that perfectly and put pressure on the QB to throw a perfect pass on that route which he did and for the WR to catch the pass which he didn't. Would you rather Jimmy tried to jump that deep hitch route and possibly give up a deep pass that could have been converted in a TD or a long gain ( remember Steelers-Ravens playoff game last year anyone, the deep ball on 3rd and long? ). Also, to expect Jimmy and Cary to press all game just b/c they are big, tall CBs is absurd too. Why in the hell would you press a WR and its 3rd and 15 and its a speedster at that? C'mon people, think realistically!

My only knock on Cary is he can't defend the deep ball, which has been shown time and time again.
Ummmmm... how many deep passes has he giving up, can anyone find the stats on that and can you compare it would other CBs in the league?

Can you name them if you don't mind b/c I don't remember him giving up that many of 25+ yards and even if he has, in 11 or 12 games that we have played, that's aight.

Also, to the guy that keeps blaming Ed for the deep balls, you also have to take this under consideration. Ed is obviously taking away one of the QB reads and I would have to say more so with the TEs and slot WRs. You see these TEs and slot WRs go off on other teams but you don't see that on us and its a reason why. You can't blame Ed for the deep balls giving up b/c quite frankly, as a CB having a safety helping you is one thing but to consistently demand that, you might as well got to some Tampa 2 scheme if you looking to get baby sitted on most of the game b/c we are not a Tampa 2 type of team. Our scheme demands for CBs to be able to guard 1 on 1 without safety help a lot of times with Ed either jumping down on a route underneath or playing Cover 1 most of the tme with Pollard up in the box and Ed can only help out on 1 side playing cover 1. If Ed just stayed back deep like a traditional, by the book safety, I believe those TEs and slot WRs would have a lot more success against us . We just held down one of the best TE tandems in the business and without Ed coming up, I just don't think that would be possible. Ed has always played like this and he may be a step slower but he's still very effective and still has the potential to single handely turn a game around. Like Ed said, he is being targeted less and less these days and its nothing he can do about that which eliminates his chances a lot of creating turnovers but he is taking a read away from the QB and that's great.

But how do you know what Ed Reed's assignment was on the play? It doesn't matter whether Cary was the only one to get his hands on the WR. He stayed with Ginn throughout the play, allowed him to make the reception and then didn't bring him down after doing so. That's on Cary.

Ed Reed faltered in the Bengals game? Here's a quote from a PFF article reviewing the contest:

"Safeties Bernard Pollard (+1.6) and Ed Reed (+2.8) however, were more consistent. Pollard did miss a pair of tackles, but he also recorded a sack and made a few tackles near the line of scrimmage in the run game. Reed didn’t allow any passes to be completed in his coverage while also intercepting a deep ball and coming up big with a diving pass breakup with 50 seconds remaining in the game."

I'm not sure if you're wrongly assuming that Reed is playing the deep middle on every play. But as solid as Cary looked at times, he's also struggled significantly at times as well. I think it's a little silly to blame Reed for not babysitting him every time he makes a mistake.

Jimmy will start eventually, Cary has done a fine job this year though so definitely keep him as #3 when Jimmy is ready. J.Smith+Webb will be one of the best if not the best corner tandem for years to come.

Yeah I gotta agree about Webb. He has improved bigtime since last year. Has a pick 6 and I think more int's than Ed this year. I don't like how Cary has been playing so far off the WR's at the line of scrimmage. He needs to be jamming them more. Jimmy did well last night and has shown he's not afraid to tackle. Oh and please get rid of Foxworth and Carr.

The few times Cary got burnt on the deep pass - was because Ed Reed was out of position.

If you notice Ed was behind the receiver and Cary and he was trying to catch up. (Cin game. down the sideline)
Then Ed went for a blitz and left Cary one on one. They didn't get to the QB and Cin QB threw a strike down the sideline. No way to defend.

In the 49ers Game, Ed was almost a no show on the field.
He appears to be avoiding hits. Instead he always seems to be going after the ball instead of the receiver, Like it is his last horra.

If you talk about the CB's and safties, you have to include the bad play of Ed Reed.
Ed has always done that, he takes risks to break open the huge play, and 9 times out of 10 it pays off. I've been happy with Ed's play this year. He's been disruptive, a sound tackler, and his mere presence practically shuts down half the field of play. Heck, Webb gives 100% of the credit for his amazing play to Ed.

And I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment that he avoids hits. The man has 39 combined tackles for a FREE SAFETY. And I saw him on the LOS multiple times last night during running downs. Obviously he's not going to thump people like he did back in the day, but he still has that ability (please refer to the hits in Week 1 this year and the Chiefs playoff game from last season); he has a serious nerve impingement that would end the career of a lesser player.

Next time you try and question Ed's abilities just look back to that sack strip of Sanchez.
